  1. Multiple distribution installation rampage... on Linux's Achilles Heel Apparently Revealed · · Score: 1

Actually, you can really tell someone has no business installing Linux when they go on what I like to call a "multiple distribution installation rampage", or MDIR. Its what n00bs do when one particular distro doesn't setup something automatically for them. Its sad really, especially when someone writes an article actually ADMITTING to MDIR, they are basically admitting they didn't do one lick of homework before attempting to install...or even consult an expert. Kinda hard to take what he has to say seriously when he can't even do some simple research.

All the guy needed to do was look and fscking see if his sound card was supported by ALSA. Is that so hard?

Anyway, I hope that this message reaches someone and saves them from MDIR. Learning how to use Linux correctly is a lot more fun than installing 9 distros.

I would really like to see the FTC come down on MS with the full force of the law for this. Baystar admits MS execs called them to discuss a SCO investment. This was well into the FUD campaign and the leaked email suggests they were going to keep funding it. If a convicted monopoly secretely funding legal action against its only competitor is not illegal, I don't know what is. You can't smoke pot in this country, but this is ok?

I think things are really going to get interesting now. When Sun becomes the new anti-linux golden boy for MS, SCO might get jealous and probably turn on MS. FUDMaster vs FUDMaster.

Are you guys all forgeting the MS + Baystar connection? The leaked memo? That shit totally fucked SCO over, MS wants out badly. There are serious legal implications for MS if a investigation shows they directly or even indirectly funded this. At least now, the company can claim plausable deniabilty.

Next time they'll be smarter though. The plan now is for SCO to back out before the GPL is held up in US court and for someone else to come in and carry the FUD torch against Linux. Its probably going to suit patent related.

Not to mention, OSS idealism has nothing to do with this. You don't have to be clued into the OSS community to know you don't bow to extortionists. Most of the other companies who received the letter are not 'Linux Zealots' and they didn't cave in to some company claiming 'all your kernel are belong to us'.

The fact of the matter is that NV1 payed money to a company making erroneous claims because they thought they could make money from those claims as well. (just look how much the SCO execs have made lying their ass off) NV1 had to know perfectly well that what SCO was saying is FUD and greed led them to where they are now. I say F them. Well, sorry. I believe forks are good no matter why they happen and XFree was ripe for forking. I'm sure most of them happen because of differences between the development team, who cares? If people are not happy they shouldn't feel like they have to stay, thats just a recipe for bad code. The end result of a fork is still the same no matter why it happens, more code, more choices, more features, fun for everyone (not just the people who play CVS god)

Noone is trying to reinvent the X11 protocol. The XFree forks have mainly come about because more and more people are using Linux and finding XFree a large barrier to entry. We want something faster, smarter, and with tons of shiny new features as well as compatability. If you've looked at any of the XFree forks, noone is breaking X11, they are just trying to develop XFree under a more open model.
