Which is why we need to encourage developers to start creating games with cross platform in mind.
Err, yeah...they are making XBox + PS2 versions without crossplatform code??!?!? Dude....its 2004, most code is cross platform. A linux port is trivial in some cases but even then, the time it takes to create a Linux version pakage it in a way that the Linux community doesn't boycott you (ala Ut2003 and NWN) costs more money than just not having a Linux verision at all.
I agree. I don't see how people can even write articles about Linux uptake being slow. Considering the 'forces' that want to keep it down, I don't see how Linux uptake could be any faster than it is right now.
If anything, its the USERS, not the OSS developers who need to get more involved. Its the users who have this notion that running software that isn't free is bad. (yet still run the latest nVidia drivers) Its the users who never put their money where their mouth is when a mainsteam Linux game comes out. Its the users who need to email, call, write, beg game developers and publishers for a port of that 'killer game'. How do you think mainstream gaming moved from Apple to the PC? It was that the PC users created demand by writing letters and calling developers.
There are A LOT of desktop linux users now and more and more are joining the ranks everyday. We have a lot more users than most people give us credit for. We are a fragmented community though which is why we seem so small. We are also very hard to please. Most Linux users demand nothing but perfection from an industry that knows very little of the Linux culture.
Two examples of this:
1. people organized a boycott of UT2003 because the box didn't have the tux logo on it.
2. people organized a boycott of NWN because the cut scenes didn't play.
This kind of crap needs to stop. We should be a bit more reasonable and stop trying suffucate these developers who try to help us out. Other people in the industry hear about these things and don't want to touch us with a 10 foot pole.
Another myth floating around is that developers don't write cross platform code. Newsflash, you can't have PS2, Xbox, Apple, and PC versions unless your writing code that will compile for different platforms. For many developers, a Linux version is a some what trivial matter. Its dealing with the Linux people that scare them off.
I mean that the Linux code should kept in step with the Win32 code either by contractors or full time in house programmers and the releases are controlled by the original publisher, not a 3rd party, like Loki Software or LGP.
What I think does not work is the Loki business model, where the game is published in a another box by a different publisher.
It seems to me that the number of users who have picked up 2.6 x compared to the number that picked up 2.4 from 2.2 has greatly diminished on many of the distro mailing lists.
Hmm, I heard the 2.6 adoption has been faster than any other version. The beta versions were like a testing phenonenom or something. People were testing 2.6 in droves compared to 2.4. I don't even know of anyone running 2.4 anymore actually. I mean, why not upgrade? The configuration is much cleaner and easier, its much more responsive than 2.4 for desktop use, and all you need is an updated module utilities package and create the/sys dir and your good to go. Going from 2.2 to 2.4 required much more tweaking.
The future of Linux gaming is in the hands of the original developer of the game. Epic, Bioware, ID, etc. Those guys put out excellent Linux releases. Maybe the execution was botched on a couple but Epic LEARNED alot with UT2003 and the UT2004 port is being perfectly done. You gotta cut developers some slack on their first try at Linux. (ie. stop mouthing off in forums like you know what your talking about)
You know Linux is a multi-tasking OS right? You CAN still use the machine to make idiot Slashdot posts when its compiling. Just thought you should know.
I think RAM disks, the kind you buy, are non volatile. If the power goes out your data is still there. The kind you make via software use your system's ram.
Are you sure your responding to the right post? I didn't post anything about winning the business arena but hey whatever. I could care less. I care about all those poor saps who have spent years dedicating their time and code then have Mr EV1 give them a big thanks by publically selling them all out.
IBM, Redhat, Novell all Linux(ish) companies, all suing/countersuing, people complaining to FTC, SCC, hundreds of articles all over the net, PJ and Groklaw.net...sounds like a Jihad to me man.
I'm simply saying, don't shit where you eat. Its a rule that trancends the GPL. The guy has paid money to help fight a community that built the kernel that runs thousands of his machines. He's getting what he deserves. I hope he gets a lot more.
Quote From CEO of EV1 "So we felt like we were doing the right thing for customers, the right thing for ourselves and the right thing for our shareholders. We felt (that paying the licensing fee) put our customers and ourselves in a position where we could concentrate on our business instead of a bunch of lawsuits."
Its funny he never thought of doing the right thing for Linux. Considering how many Linux machines he has in which he paid $0 for the operating system you would think that there would be some loyalty. Linux probably played a key role in EV1's growth over the years. This guy is just another example of someone who will take take take from our community and never give anything back.
I worked support for a long time. I don't think the users are inept...I think they just have other interests besides computers. I mean, if a brain surgeon or nobel prize winner calls for help on setting up dialup networking, are they a idiot user? I don't see doctors making websites about what idiots we are when we call them for medical advice.
They are called the Canopy group. This has been discussed before. Members of the Canopy group and their numerous shell companies are pretty much the only ones buying and selling.
Typically these viruses (or more correctly, worms) do little damage to the infected computer, intent mostly on spreading far and wide, and sometimes inflicting DoS on some poor evil empire.
Damn, the guys at Norton have been busy lately. They should get paid more for all this overtime.

Yeah, its called "Emerge nvidia-kernel"
The plan is to come back in 3 years and sue them for contributing parts of Amiga to Linux.

Make sure you have the RTC compiled in and that ALSA has RTC timing on and that should fix it.
Sorry, let me explain myself.

Yes, but my question is, will Darl prefer peanut butter or jelly? Personally, I think he's a grape jelly kind of guy.
I thought that was intersting as well. The EV1 CEO is such a dolt. I hope Ev1 goes down in flames.
"So we felt like we were doing the right thing for customers, the right thing for ourselves and the right thing for our shareholders. We felt (that paying the licensing fee) put our customers and ourselves in a position where we could concentrate on our business instead of a bunch of lawsuits."

Man, what a jackass that guy is.
I hope they remember to send the KDE team a thank you note.
Have you tried checking between your chair and your keyboard?
Its funny Americans are only good at the skills the cheats provide.
The only reason there are people still playing this game is because mommy won't buy them a decent PC to play with.

EV1 forever goes on my list of most hated morons.
There is no way to port MacroMedia Flash MX to Linux without stealing source code from SCO.
5 insightful? Your a f-ing moron.
Isn't that what religion is? A business?
They are called the Canopy group. This has been discussed before. Members of the Canopy group and their numerous shell companies are pretty much the only ones buying and selling.
Now that is god damn funny.
Damn, the guys at Norton have been busy lately. They should get paid more for all this overtime.
