Finally, someone who knows what the hell is going on. There are ALOT of companies out there with thousands of employees who basically sit there are enter bits of data into a single app, or take customer service phone calls, or maintain basic spread sheets. What do these non skilled people need Windows for? They are not installing apps on their own anyway. Why pay MS $100+ per seat when more often than not they can deploy Linux thin clients or basic systems for what could be massive savings.

Well boss, instead of upgrading all the hardware and the software we installed Linux. Its faster, more secure, free, and we were able to reuse most of our existing desktop systems. We saved the company millions of dollars. With the desktop hardware we could not reuse we made backup SMTP, DNS, and web servers..once again, with no cost to us for software or hardware. All we have to do is hire 1 or 2 competent people to maintain all this stuff. Of course, we'll have to pay them slightly more and give them good parking spots because they actually come with a friggen clue.

Its not that they don't want people to use the service, its just not right for the top 5% of people to be using 99% of the available bandwidth on a node, even if they are not home!

These people setup Newsbin to download pron, anime, etc 24/7 hours a day. Gigs upon gigs per day. Meanwhile, it hurts the service for EVERYONE ELSE. I say screw the leechers. Any normal person or even a family of 10 normal net users is not going to run into the invisible barrier. It also seems like we've been having this 'unlimited' conversation for about 10 years now. 'Unlimited', if the term was used, does not mean unlimited transfer, just like in dialup day it didn't mean you could monopolize a phone line 24/7. ISPs and Telcos have services that will meed your needs if you require that type of 'dedicated' connection. All of these people are just NNTP users who collect junk and warez off Usenet.

I have an idea, find the place in your AUP that says its your god given right to be a member of Comcast.net, show them that, and I'm sure they will leave you alone!

Is it safe to assume that 2.6.1 is stable and secure to use, or would it be more reasonable to wait until it enters more main stream usage and possible problems are exposed?

That was the point of the whole 2.6.0 test series. The reason they did that was because it was likely that someone who wouldn't touch 2.5 with a ten foot pool would run 2.6 text X, and they did. 2.6.0 probably had more testing than any other kernel. I've been using it on two machines ince test1, the only problem I encountered was that DRI was broke in 1 release.

Have there been any articles or reviews comparing the performance of various kernel versions? I'd find it interesting how much progress has been made in areas such as network throughput, disk access, etc. I guess its possible there isn't any more room for progress in some areas, I would find that interesting too.

There are many benchmarks that illistrate how much better 2.6.0 is than 2.4. You can always boot to it and see for yourself and then switch back to 2.4 if you have problems. Just make your old kernel the second option in Grub/Lilo so you can go back and remove 2.6. You might be able to find more info on Kerneltrap.org

I'm not how how important network throughput and disk access are since they don't have much to do with the kernel and more to do with the network interface and filesystem respectively.

  25. Re:Of course... on Kernel 2.6.1 Released · · Score: 4, Informative

    Try this.

Copy the .config file from the 2.6.0 directory to the 2.6.1 directory. Then enter the 2.6.1 directory. Type: 'make oldconfig'. That will apply the old kernel configuration to the new one asking you manually about any new options. Then just do your normal, make, make modules_install.

Beats the hell out of make menuconfig.
