    I would much rather everyone get free healthcare.

    There is no such thing. Merely a different line item on your paystub.
    Unless hospitals and equipment miraculously spring forth by themselves, powered by puppy farts and ground unicorn horn, and doctors/nurses/admin are paid from that pot o gold at the end of the rainbow...there is no such thing as 'free healthcare'.

    Stop calling it that.

    Honestly tossing a rock through a neighbors window is barely a crime especially when the child ends up having to pay to replace the window.

    In Virginia, if the home is occupied at the time, that is a felony. ("throws any missile" = throwing a rock)

    Bullshit. It's theft of another person's labor. Equivalent to if you spend a year of your life as an engineer, but you only get half the pay. The other half gets distributed among thieves claiming credit for your work, even though they didn't do a damn thing. They are parasites... nothing mo

    Gee...sounds just like music and software piracy. Except without 'the other half' getting distributed.

    As a developer, it is my responsibility to make sure that the self destruct button is NOT right next to the refresh button, and that the self-destruct button has an obvious warning message before the countdown starts.

    The 'obvious' warning still doesn't work.

    One of our major apps has a 3 level delete.
    "If you delete this, it is gone forever" OK/Cancel
    "Do you really want to delete this?" Y/N
    "Do you really want to delete this? It will be gone forever." Y/N

    Weekly, we get calls - 'Can you restore x, from 2 weeks ago?'

    For adults in the West, maybe. I just counted/estimated for my semi-immediate family (kids/boyfriends/grandchildren/etc). We are not even at 2:1. And this is a VERY tech-centric family. My kids have never known a house without a PC. My grandkids were on the keyboard before they could talk.

    All the preteen grandkids skew the stats. And my local network of 11 individual devices tries to skew it the other way, but doesn't make up for all the little anklebiters.

    but you'd think just in the consumer market most people have at least 2 or 3 internet connected devices (laptops, phones, pda's, ebook readers, video games consoles, etc.)

    A large segment of the world's population doesn't have lunch.

    What if the driver fails to comply? Will the interlock kill the engine? Or will it just keep "ordering the driver to pull over and restart the car"? I can picture a disembodied electronic voice repeating, "STOP! OR I SHALL TELL YOU TO STOP AGAIN!"

    The ones here in VA flash the lights and beep the horn, notifying everyone around you something is wrong...just like a stolen car alarm.
    Monthly, reports are sent to your drunk school. So if you disable it, they don't get that report and you are in violation.

    What's the rationale behind not putting a blower on all cars? Seems like a good idea and not that unreasonable...

    Because these things also trigger on mouthwash, and recently eaten fruit. You are warned about this when you have it installed.

    So you start drinking ..After you start the car??????

    The ones here in VA require a blow to start, then some random time between 6 and 20 minutes of driving, then again some random time from 20-60 minutes. It starts screaming at you at those random times. You have 5 minutes to blow. If you don't blow, or fail, the lights flash and horn blows.

    Not possible. Friend of mine just got off one of these.
    The way it works is...suck suck suck beep blow. You must blow for x seconds...when it beeps, then you have about 1/2 second to suck.

    After watching her go through all this crap, my recommendation is - if you have the option of restricted license + breathalyser, or no license for a year...suck it up and go with the no license. It's just not worth the expense/trouble.

    This has happened with every military force, in every conflict.
    Every. Single. Time.

    Obviously not saying this is right. But there is a difference between policy/law, and rogue troops.

    The arrest is a matter of public record. The same way that newspapers and TV have been publishing this stuff forever. Not saying it's right, but there it is.

    They signed Kyoto because, being a non-Annex I party, they didn't actually have to do anything!

    Depends on the level of 'resource scarce apocalyptic scenario' you're talking about. Read the book One Second After (EMP takes out all electronics in North America and elsewhere).
    Small towns - a week, followed by an uneasy local truce. Urban areas - 1-2 days.

    And for when the dweller is not home, may I suggest video cameras which stream to a safe room (or offsite), triggered by motion, with a pre-motion buffer of a few minutes. Record sound too.

    I tried this with a couple of webcams. For a cam pointing out the window, it is very hard to get the sensitivity right. Cloud shadows, cars going by, neighborhood kids riding bikes...All trigger the motion detector, unless you get it exactly right.

    While not nearly approaching Bush's exploits, we had many military actions during the Clinton years.
    Somalia/Bosnia/Kosovo/Afghanistan/Sudan/Desert Fox in Iraq. And it was far more than '0' killed/wounded.
