And I consider the "Other" distros feeble "not ready" releases more than an "anoyance" The frozen version (potato) is 2.2 based and powers all my production boxes. And Ian, I think I know which filesystem you'll choose.....
YOu have GOT to be kidding me. THis is the same old "someone else is to blame cause I suck" cop-out. Look here, it's not someone elses fault you aren't ceo, it's yours. Noone is keeping you from excelling in your line of work except you! Seek responsibility, and take responsibity for your actions. In other words, stop whining about it and do something. Show some ambition and you'll get somewhere. Isn't the CEO of napster female? I could be wrong. Sorry. Just my two cents. I just get tired of that argument.
Put them on a linux box. teach them the shell. Then teach them shell scripting. Show them emacs and vim. Get them to use it for daily activities. But I would say never start them with windows...YUCK!
Dude, it's abou tlike any other "./configure && make && make install" how much easier could it be? To make it even easier, you can run debian. After you get done doing the kernel configuration of your choice (xconfi, menuconfig, or heavan forbid config) you run "make-kpkg --rev kernel_image" this will build you a nice kernel package in.deb. format. Use dpkg -i to install it and off you go. And as far a documentation goes, if you read the kernel HOW-TO you could hve gotten it done (albeit a little outdated I think)
What I fail to understand is how you had to do a "recovery" if you had moved your working kernel to say/boot/vmlinux.old and made another entry in lilo.conf you could have simnply rebooted your old kernel if you had fscked up the one you were building (remember if that is a modular kernel to keep the modules in/lib/modules/ or your system would be unusable anyway.
To gain market share. This whole thing reeks of Microsofts MCSE program. Pay us lots of money to certify you, then pay us more to certify you when the technolgy changes. Thus encouraging corporations to run Red Hat because they can hire "Certified Engineers" Come o n people why else would they not want to support the project (I forget the name in my anger) that is designed for non-distro specific certifications. Why because Red Hat is a typical commercial organization out for one thing. Money! Which is not a bad thing, but they should not hide behind the pretense of "Oh we are doing it to help the linux community..." Red Hat puts out inferior distributions with pretty GUI installers and configuration tools all aimed at the newbie. While I think this is great, it also makes for overly lazy admin who will not read the documentation, thereby leading to poorly configured, insecure, and inneffecient systems. Red Hat makes me sick. Note to all newbies: Start with RedHat then move to a real distro like debian for important stuff. Thier other selling point is "Tech Support" how many of you have actually called Red Hat for tech support? Not many I can assure you. Thier tech support is probably tantamount to Microsofts. Red Hat != Linux. It's about time corporate america sees that.
One thing that has always pissed me off about windows software is how it does things without your permission / knowledge. This is just one more example. One thing that comes to mind is how a luser is prompted with a nasty error message when he tries to change his swap-file settings. "Do you want windows to manage your wapfile?" I say "Fuck NO!" then it will go so far as to not say anything about writing registry keys that will automagically forward emails to all you contacts. What the fuck? This must be a feature too. Hey Bill if you re reading this (yeah right) You should be ashamed of yourself! And Real networks should have a class action law-suit filed against them for invasion of privacy. And people wonder why I refuse to use windows and windows only software.
I'm no astro / quantum physisist mind you , but I fail to see the practical reason for putting average joe's up on/around the moon. What possible good could come of it. Except more garbage to hear about in the news. There is little of value to b e learned from the moon, it would however befun to go run around up there all wieghtless and shit. That I can see. And why bother mapping the moon? Who really cares what's up there? Furthermore, how is this geek news worthy? Like any real geeks will be able to afford to go to the moon anyway, and why would they? The connectivity would suck!
Look man, I don't buy any of this for a second. What happens to stampede is NOT going to affect, say, Debian. I for one am all for Debian because of it's corporate model. It's totally free, it's a non-profit organization. Now, on the other hand some companies (RootHack, SuSHits, you know who I mean) are in this for financial gain as well as improving the the codebase of the linux movement. I say to each thier own! It takes all kinds to make the world go around.
There has to be a big man, and a small man; a good man, and a bad man. You dig? I may think SuSE, and RedHats distros suck, but I am smart enough to admit that hey, they have done alot for the linux community, I for one would not be a linux geek if I hadn't started with redhat.
OTOH, I could care less what happens to the stock market, I will always be a linux lover, regardless of market share. And stampede's demise is not in anyway a precursor to the destruction of the whole community any more than if one building falls down in a major city, and you gotta admit, stampede's building was pretty small by comparison.
Well, too much of anything is a BAD thing. But I for one would love to see more women on the Net. I am also hoping to meet one of these elusive geek-girls. Nothing wors than trying to relate to a person whom you have nothing in common with.
People who flame lack the eloquence needed to convey thier point in a rational and practical manner. It is also useful to point out that although you can Linux for free (In most cases) you often have to "sell" it your bosses or customers, and usually co-workers as well. If you are any kind of a salesman, you can get linux in a business. I personally have gotten it into many businesses that have 0 tech savvy people and many long time MS fans. Most people are tired of MS shenanigans as well.
On a lighter note, anyone who thinks you need a MCSE to be an NT admin is on crack. Hell show me and MCSE, and I'll show you someone who was misinformed and wanted to pad a resume. I got a great job as an admin with no professional experience or certification due in large part to my personal Linux experience. I "sold" my skills and linux. Now I have bank and fun.... hehe
John C. is a professional, and IMHO an industry leader. He was one of the first game coders to embrace Linux and the Open Source Community and gave us quite a start. He opened the doors for alot of great hardware and software advancements made available to us. I hope to christ that the GPL weathers this storm and that this mod maker sees that he is truly doing a grave injustice not just to a Helluva Guy (And iD) but also to boatloads of GPL coders and GPL Code Proponents and cuts the bullshit.
Dude, if you read this: Stop! Comply with the GPL and stop trying to make waves. THis is sensless! You took a great piece of GPL code, which you where happy to get and made some mods. That by definition makes it a GPL'd chunk of code. Think of the ramifications of your actions and give something back to the same damned licsence that gave you the code to hack in the first place.
Hmmm, I saw a theme for E that looks just like mac OS, even has the "Apple" logo! I guess I'll just buy an intel machine and install E withthe mac OS theme instead of buying a Mac.
Holy shit! can't they find anything better to do? Thier lawyers must have gotte bored one day and typed "Apple look-alike" Into a search engine. This is the dumbest thing I have heard today! I am sure I'll hear more though.
Look, why do we always insist on arguing about silly things like this. Emacs vs. ViM, Mutt vs. Pine, Linux vs. everything. Goddamit! IMHO you should tell people your likes and dislikes about a particular package, and then let them decide. It is hardly productive to flame. That makes people resentful. Linux will never replace windows on the desktop, but that's o.k. It is meant for other things just as ViM is meant for different things than emacsen. Don't you guys ever get tired of these old arguments?
I hate to admit it but you are right. I have a copy of each flavor of win2k (Professional, Server, and Advanced Server) and I've not the computer to run Advanced server. and I quote "..windows 2000 supports up to eight CPUs on one server, 256 MB RAM Reccomended (128 MB minimum supported; 8GB maximum)" That's alot of machine. And I do think that running out to crash thier stupid shin-dig is a colossolly bad idea, and will make us all look like a bunch of zealots. Just leave them alone and continue to contribute to the linux community and we _should_ all be able to co-exist just fine. I almost forgot: Linux still does better on my hardware than win2k server does (IMHO)
I didn't flame anyone, I posted that comment cause that's how I felt. If noone likes it, tough. If I on't like someone's comment I grumble / chuckle to myself. I never flame people ( Not even the IDIOTS On my mailing list )
I for one am of the opiniong that with the exception of a few hard heads out there with some very esoteric hardware / software combinations everything is gonna roll over fine. There was some reports on the news about people getting fucked up electric bills here in the states already with the dat 1900 on them (When referring to billing changes next year) and they are already whining about that.
The biggest threat is going to be from lunatics who are going to assume that bank alarms etc. won't work and go out and act like juvenile delinquents on halloween. It is for this reason that I am staying home, and surfing on my fat ass ADSL. To hell with y-2-fucking-k and to hell with y-2-fucking-morons.
You dignified my stupid remark with a comment. All I have to say is: I have seen some pretty crappy countries and I am GLAD to be an american. This is just one example of that. It isn't this one incident that led me to this opinion. I have seen adults beat up children for food in Somalia, and petty arguments destroy millions of dollars worth of military work in Haiti. So don't be too quick to judge. I think it's terrible that CHILDREN would act this way preiod. Thier parents should be ashamed. But it has been my experience that parents of kids who would act this way, are shit too.
The fraud waste and abuse was one reason I finally decided to get out of the military. I too had to baby sit a bunch of NT boxes. What's worse is that before they bought any hardware / software they didn't bother to consult someone that knew anything about IT shit. THey overpaid for gateways and dells and god knows what else. What in gods name does a workstation that is only gonna do data entry need a 32 meg video card and SB64 sound card with altec lansing speakers. save your cash on that stuff and get good procs and alot of memory. I just didn't get it.
get em 40oz! People always complain. If it's so hard, run in console or stick with win. It's not too tough to read some man pages or some web pages and figure it out. I for one like to have more control over my hardware. Ever had a windows machine add hardware with plug-and-pray that wasn't in the machine? I have. Now ask me if I ever had a linux box assume that there was hardware in there that wasn't. NO. Linux will probably never be as plug-n-pray ready as Winblows, cuz it's meant for different stuff. There is a place for all OSs. I have gotten some tech support calls from some pretty dumbassed people. They need windows to accomplish anything. I have actually had to explain repeatedly to people how to get thier email with windows. So don't be too hard on billy's bullshit, it has a place and always will.
Hopefully they will continue to work together, this can only mean good things for both projects, I wonder if they will share code, and ideas or just vote on the directions they are going in. How much a "part" of the opengroup will they really be.
I seriously doubt they'll make a go of it, but I wish them the best. Wonder what slick willy will think of this....
moderate trolls down. moderate this up . I just gotta know what he says to this one! I am gonna guess "Corel" or "Storm"
And I consider the "Other" distros feeble "not ready" releases more than an "anoyance" The frozen version (potato) is 2.2 based and powers all my production boxes. And Ian, I think I know which filesystem you'll choose.....

Good call, can I buy you a beer? At least one post makes sense. And yes I think Goldstien is a pompous ass as well.
I have been with pleny of stupid women and now I am holding out for a geek-girl.
