Although I absolutly hate the game(I used to play a lot of UO though...), EQ has probably affected more lives than any other game. Sony has been sued after one of their customers commited suicide, and there are many support groups and such for the family and friends of EQ addicts.
Personally, for a MMO to have any appeal to me it must have PvP... The only purpose of it is to get to the next level, hence the name levelquest.
Trust me, It's been done. There's nothing like getting an IM from a "friend" only to see 1,000 goatses pop up on screen, moving around in circles, and a "Hey everybody, I'm looking at gay porno" sound.
Not that I'd ever be stupid enough to fall for that...
That's true - but these people aren't in it just for the money. I doubt many of the prizes would even pay for the costs of succeeding... And it's not exactly a guarenteed shot.
I used to have DSL, but recently switched to cable. The DSL had a static ip, got 768kbps down and 128kbps up(in reality 600/120), and blocked no ports... Unfortunatly my ping times to that same Ultima Online server was in the area of 70-80, and in Counter-Strike had a difficult time finding a sub100ms ping server. Reliability was also a major problem.
Then I got cable. I get consistant 2200/360kbps speeds, 30ms latency to UO servers, sub50ms pings to most CS server, perfect reliability, and no blocked ports. I don't have a static ip, instead i a DNS2GO service. I don't get a top level domain name, but it's no big deal really.
Even when graphically game engines do reach a plateau, the need for coders in the gaming industy won't be over with. Graphics are only part of the need for realism... I believe it will still be a very long time before games are fully dynamic.
Just imagine a game that you can litterally do anythingin the game's world! The perfect game would have the capability to create a world to the extent of Star Trek's holodeck. I'm talking more about on a 2d monitor however... But what's next?? Perhaps som sort of neural interface that would let you see, hear, feel, taste, and smell everything?? This to me seems much more possible than an actual holodeck.
I guess that's the point of computers though...if we could all calculate as fast as a computer, process data as fast as a computer, and perform other tasks as fast and as well as a computer, we wouldn't need computers, now would we?
We need computers for porn. Nothing could ever possibly substitute computers in that regard.
It's very simple to mod a Radeon 9x00 into a FireGL... Just check out nvworld for details This will turn it into the EXACT same thing as a FireGL(only drivers are that one resistor are different)
Turning a GeForce 4 into a Quadro is also easy, however the antialiasing won't be quite the same...
I don't see why they used those benchmarks... Measuring the speed of quake for a workstation card is kind of stupid imo.
Lets say you have a wife. If someone pulls a gun and aims it at her head, do you wait till he pulls the trigger until you do something? If you have the capability to stop him before he pulls the trigger, you know that you can stop him but you have to kill him. Who do you choose?
This is Slashdot... You might have had more success using the same analogy, but substituting the word "computer" for "wife".
That's not true. Recently there are some very cool and innovative UI enhancing programs for KDE.
Karamba displays useful information such as the weather, cpu utilization, or the latest on Slashdot directly on your desktop.
Slicker provides the desktop enhacning Kards, Slider, and Taskbar.
You forgot to include the obligitory "+5 funny post listing sarcastic posts" ;-)
All women business??
Wow, Affirmative Action might just get me a job now !!
I find it funny how he says "job chances", he says it like they put your names into a hat to select who gets the job.

This is the PS2 version...
He says lower resolution?? Most competitive players play in either 640x480 or 800x600.

Yeah damn that EMP... If a neutron bomb goes off, I sure as hell don't want to lose my 100+ TB pr0n collection.

Of course, being able to optimize wasn't critical to getting an approval from me
We've used MS software... You did not need to tell us that.
Maybe you'd have a bit more money if you hadn't bought a Mac...
Sure, it isn't as fast as DDR
You've never seen me play DDR... Not exactly fast !
It looks like you need - da da da da! - EXTREME PROGRAMMING!

Anytime a connection is made to a webserver it uses RAM , and that is one of the major causes of /.ing.
If pages are only text, most of the time bandwidth would be perfectly adequete.
It's pronounced ga-noo.
Looks like a nice way to prevent sites from being /.ed
Try playing counter-strike or Shadowbane with a PS controller... Watch me whip you with a mouse & keyboard.
Mendleson's is a great place! Their website is here, but as oter's have mentioned the most fun is going there in person.
//I'm an idiot... This time I included the linkage ;)
