this guy is one of the biggest string-theory whores out there.

there was a period of time - late 90's - where string theory was in high vogue, and this guy was everywhere: those stephen hawking shows on pbs, tv news programs, he even spoke at a mit convocation i believe.

when i saw his name in the byline, i was somewhat surprised -- until i saw the section entitled "String theory to the rescue?"

invest in string theory! this guy needs to get paid!

  3. mit on Software Monoculture in Schools? · · Score: 1

the reason for a mono-culture when it comes to on-campus computing is that it's much more easier (and therefore cheaper) to support and maintain. dells preloaded with win2k is probably gonna be hard to beat, esp. considering that the students are gonna be working on computers similar to ~95% of the rest of the world.

even the big schools aren't immune to such mono-culturism. the mit computing environment has always been unix based (well, since multics =). for a long time i believe they used dec's, then sun's running solaris, and now linux on commoditized hardware (with few exceptions, i believe there is a small mac lab and a small windows lab). the fact of the matter is, the singular environment makes the life of I/S so much easier - and the students work in the environment that they'll most likely see after they graduate (as they are engineers we're talking *nix - so that they can run magic, matlab, hspice, all that good stuff).

at sloan (the b-school) i believe just about everyone uses windows-based laptops and that's what the I/S dept. supports there.

it's just a matter of balancing functionality and price.

of course, i would hope that students aren't barred from using whatever environment they wish at home - tho this probably isn't the case. at mit, alot of effort was made to make sure course-specific software was made available on a range of platforms. but that's a different matter altogether.

as a recent graduate of one of those MA schools, i have to say that a large percentage of my fellow classmates (myself included) have decided to stay in-state. although i'm sure there are many reasons for this, i can think of two off the top of my head.

    1. those wishing to create new technology startups often times choose to start them near or around the school they came from - as it is a) familiar ground b) an easy place to cull slave labor/interns/new recruits (which means more people staying in state).
    2. spending 4+ years in any one location (hopefully) means you are ensconced in an environment and community that one may be hesitant to leave. by leaving, i mean a city and its culture/people, not college life - leaving which is healthy and normal (nothing more sad than seeing a 26 yr old "professional" at an undergrad party)

this is very unlikely as, it has been reported widely in the past, apple makes VERY little in pure profit on sales of songs - on the order of a penny or two a track. i believe steve has even been quoted as saying that they expect to make all their profit from this foray into the music biz with the iPod (with which they have HUGE margins). so, your analogy is somewhat correct, only reversed. i agree with the original parent .. if the iPod turns out to retail at $99, it's a volume play, pure and simple. but i doubt it'll happen b/c apple will try to maximize profit .. esp. since this is a new product. maybe in a coupla months, the price will drop if the volume isn't as high as expected.

second, according to the WHO, south korea has had only 3 probably cases reported with 0 deaths. this is as much as sweden, and less then the u.k. to make false judgements of a person based on their skin color soudns pretty racist to me.

now even as a non-asian person, i find this remark to be quite offensive. in fairness to the writers of the article, the whole convention was likely dubbing the area "SARS Central" -- but that's just worse. at best it's a tasteless and inappropriate joke and at worst, it's a very racist remark. i'm really disappointed in gamespy .. i'm used to them producing higher quality articles that don't have to resort to racial slurs to keep readers reading.
