  1. I specialized in computer science in HS in 1968 on NYC To Open 1st High School Dedicated To Software · · Score: 1

I transferred to a special magnet school in NY to take computer science back in 1968. We worked on teletypes with acoustic modems and punched paper tape attached to a PDP-something-or-other. We mostly used Fortran 44 but had a class in Cobol as well (hated it even back then). We were taught modular programming style and projects included games and mathematics. It was only the second school in the US that offered that program at the time. I feel very lucky to have had that opportunity.

  2. A simple way to _reduce_ emails on Europe's Largest IT Company To Ban Internal Email · · Score: 1

If corporations would send out their internal memos only twice a day, say, 7:00am and 12:-00pm, that wouldn't necessarily reduce the quantity of emails but would greatly reduce the interruptions. And, only use the "high importance" flag when absolutely necessary. And if people would quit hitting "reply all" unless it is necessary. I would also like to see many of the repetitious "status" emails coalesced onto a webpage. Most I don't need unless I happen to be working on a particular event, software, or machine, and then an audit trail of entries would be useful.

  11. Inheriting a Gazillion photos on How Do You Store Your Personal Photos? · · Score: 1

I've got 12 years of digital photos that number in the the tens of thousands. Yes, I'm ruthless when it comes to tossing the losers. I'm also consistent in rating the photos. Those with three or more stars I would like to think that my kids would keep. The truth is that I don't think that will happen. I feel that the only photos that may be retained are the ones I had printed in several books (I use Blurb, but there are others out there).

In the mean time I would like to make better use of the photos. I have a digital frame at work which is great. I'm thinking of getting a WD-TV setup for home. But one thing I would like that I've never seen is a photo slide show screen saver that is ratings aware. Anybody know of one of these?

  12. Keeping backups at work on How Do You Store Your Personal Photos? · · Score: 1

Corporate has sent out, several times, a warning not to bring onto the premises any device that could potentially be connected to the corporate secured network.

In addition, they have implemented a policy of laying off people annually (great for morale). The people are immediately escorted out of the building; you can't even collect your personal stuff from your desk, they'll ship it to you.

I find this whole approach Draconian. Because of this I won't keep a backup drive at work; I got a safe deposit box.

  13. Flat Tax...? on Wikileaks To Name Swiss Bank Tax Evaders · · Score: 1

If we were really paying for our own police, fire, etc we'd be paying a flat tax amount and not a percentage of income. It would also come out to be a much smaller amount per individual than each person pays now except for the very poorest.

I think if you rolled all the various taxes into one flat tax it would be much higher than, say, income tax which only represents a portion of the taxes you pay. People would revolt it they learned the true amount they pay in taxes.

I like your "I need to know" list. Where I work we have a pretty well decked out control room. Unfortunately, quite often a trouble ticket is sent to the development team responsible for the user interface instead of digging deeper to find out if it is perhaps caused by a failure in one of the back-end systems or database servers. This adds unnecessary work and delays in resolving the problem.

  19. Lightroom (mostly) on A File-Centric Photo Manager? · · Score: 1
I recently read on one of my photography forums that if you convert your raw files to Adobe's DNG (digital negative) format that subsequent tagging and edits will end up in Lightroom's database and NOT in the image file. If, on the other hand, you stay with the original raw file Lightroom will write the changes out to an XMP (side-car) file that is at least under your control and not dependent on Lightroom's database.

If anyone has some additional info on this I'd be glad to hear it.
