ALl they have to do is take a loss on it. if it's substantially cheaper than a iPod, people will buy it. And I will publish a hack to circumvent the system on freenet, making in effect a super cheap iPod. Everybody Wins!
I'm setting here coming off of a nasty 24 hours bug, so I'm not at my sharpest, but all I can say is "huh?" DO you think that the e-mail server in Bob's kitchen is going to have the same resources devoted to blocking SPAM than Mr. 10 million served webmail service? Maybe I just don't understand.
I hate to tell you this, but every MS Media player after Mediaplayer 7.1 has integrated DRM. Which is why i'll never upgrade past 7.1, or Win2k for that matter; DRM/phone home/ etc is the birds, a INTEGRATED security weakness. I'm a MCSE, but i'll NEVER go along with this crap, i'm just glad I started techie life in the Unix community.
I posted a relatively long post on this farther down the thread, but Freenet is working pretty darn good right now; If you want to see how it's supposed to function, give it a try quick before they bust it with a bad build again. Using the main access tools - FUQID & FROST - it's searchable, with near instant messaging, and downloading speeds that can sometimes match eMule.
Freenet is actually still working.
The developers have a nasty tendency to come out with a working build, wait
about 2-4 weeks, then come out with a non-working build. the last 6 stable
releases have all worked about as well as any have in the past, and we are WAY
overdue for the must upgrade non-working build.
Frost is even working pretty good; it has unnecessary libraries (why, exactly,
do you need to format the messages in XML? what was wrong with TXT?), and is
about 2mb more bloated than the
may 9th, 2003
build which worked better, but it DOES work.
There are many better ways than a gun safe if you are talking about small kids or toddlers; trigger locks would be fine, I would think. or maybe just put your gun in a place where the kids can't get to (yeah, I know, kids are amazingly resourceful, i'm not talking the top shelf of the closet here). the School events I was refering(?) to were things like regional music competitions, spelling bee playoffs, stuff like that; the area I LIVE in is about as safe as safe can be, with near-zero crime and a gun rack in every window.
Not ONLY does this get you escorted home if found drunk while in the
traditional city (instead of presumably being arrested), it apparently gives you
the right to carry a sword within the city. and you can herd your sheep across
the tower bridge, or something like that.
Well. I try to not take my family into situations where defending them would be necessary; i'm sort of fanatical about it. On the times when it is unavoidable (cultural events in "the big city", shopping trips, school stuff), i'm armed and always scanning the area, watching for threats; I doubt very seriously if this could be mistaken by a casual attacker as a sign of vulnerabilty; I see guarding the family as a much more serious job than anything similar I have done in the military. I don't think most people have the ability to use a weapon effectively in self defense, but I believe a unknown percentage could be trained so that they are; combat ranges, practice, even paintball. But even a untrained person, I believe, should have the option of defending themselves (even if they are just going to screw it up and get themselves killed), a gun gives you an option for a desperation defense you might not have had without one. I have had to use force to defend my family, but it didn't come to using a firearm, or even revealing I was carrying one. as to "proper storage". proper storage is only proper if your weapon is available to you in a hurry; anything else is counterproductive and just plain stupid. If you can't reasonably trust your kids to not steal your guns and go shoot up a school, then you don't deserve to live, let alone have kids.
WinXP... DId you know you could be court-martialed for running WinXP on a DOD system up until september of last year? then, microsoft offered the gov 498,000 licenses for about $2.00 (i'm not really sure exactly, might be as much as $10) each and the official word from the people in charge of evaluating software changes from !!can not be secured!! to "um, try not to use it in a sensitivity critical environment" Great for me as a security contractor, BAD for me as a citizen.
Well, you could just join your local
SCA group, and
always go around in period attire. they will think you are crazy, and avoid you,
plus it makes it less silly looking to carry a big blade, mace, battleaxe,
morning star, whatever.
I'm not certain what London laws are concerning carrying swords; don't you
have to be in one of the guilds or something to get away with it? but if that's
an option.....
it really does depend on what calibre you are carrying. My family defense gun during coat weather is a ruger.44; blows GREAT BIG holes in things. wouldn't work with my summer gun.
good point! I've got a 140 lb Akita; my kids have been trained since they could walk that if there is trouble, go to Kokko and unsnap his chain. I have absolutely no fear of anyone getting into my house from the rear portion of my yard, they WOULD die.
However, since I can't take him with me around people (he would eat them if they looked crosseyed or got within 30 feet of my kids) I carry a pistol; in a situation where I felt my family was in danger, I would use it. I hardly ever go armed when I'm by myself, no matter how dangerous the area.
uh, no. well, maybe if you've only studied a cinematic martial art like taekwancrap. Back when I was still doing demonstrations it was part of our "show" to take live blades from members of the audience. unless you are being mugged by someone with a sword/gun, a good japanese style will let you survive unscratched. However, it's better to just toss your wallet to the ground; and after/as you do so, politely ask if you can have your wallet back after they take your cash.
No doubt. If you do make this mistake (little slow on the draw, there, bucko!) quickly go to the body. flip it over, and shoot it again so that the bullet goes in next to the exit hole, and out by the entrance hole. that way you won't get nailed for shooting them in the back. Old cop trick.
I think she should have only been able to sue the person who handed her the coffee. THAT person was almost certainly aware the coffee was too hot; it was then that persons responsibility to either a) drop a ice cube in the coffee, b) fix the process or c) stop working there. Of course if the person burned had EVER been there before and gotten coffee that was too hot, it was her fault, totally. and fer sure.
And it might possibly be in your interest to not get your panties in a twist over something that is incredibly unimportant. If you can make yourself understood to the audience that you are trying to communicate with, you are doing it right, end of story.
This is a official PRIOR ART post. I've thought of this before. really. One variation possibility they have not covered possibly is the use as a platform for more conventional launches. This could range anywhere from taking up a conventional rocket, and launching it from the main blimp at the edge of space, to my personal favorite, building a pair of gauss cannons on the thing, pointing about 5 degrees "up" and in opposite directions; just put your item to be orbited in a light magnetically active shell, put either a counterweight or another item to be orbited in the other cannon, and zap that/those sucker(s) into orbit. I built a scale model of my basic concept one upon a time; a big toroidal balloon with a rocket suspended in the middle, with the igniter triggered by a altitude switch. I think it worked, it got outside of telescope range faster than I thought.
TOS klingons (smooth heads) resulted from a alliance between the romulan empire and the klingons; the romulans dominated the alliance, and klingons with romulan blood/features dominated the military; ridged klingons were around, but were such 2nd class citizens you weren't going to see them on a ship.
As the son, grandson, greatgrandson of coal miners, I have been indoctrinated to LOVE unions. However, most of my personal experience with them is that they cripple companies; if you HAVE to pay your workers more money than you are making, and you can NOT fire someone who refuses to work because they are in the union, then the union sucks. Unions are good, but out of control; I think of them as the #1 reason the U.S. now has a service economy (imaginary) instead of production economy (actually based on something).

95% of desktop users may run windows, but who cares? The target is people who use desktops primarily for media, and of those, I would guess the majority are capable of installing a codec. The main factor on acceptance will be if it's actually used by 10 million eMule and torrent users to share movies; if it's comparable to DivX, and less of a pain in the ass (I don't consider DivX to be much of one myself, but apparently it is to some people), then it will become a standard.
Actually, it's working right now. It worked fair in version 03; it worked good towards the end of version 04; it worked perfect when 05 was first released. Unfortunately, it then quit working almost completely. and stayed that way. nearly forever. However, for the last several stable releases, its worked nearly perfect. I'm not sure how long it's going to be before they trash it again for some obscure reason, but right now, it works good, about as good if not slightly better than ever. just don't forget to also get frost so you can search for downloads, have messaging, etc.
Terrorists my ass. It's obvious. it's always SO obvious, I don't know why i'm always the only one to see it. These things are part of the joint UN/NATO/AZLAN takeover, people! After President-for-life Busch gets "re-elected" this year these things are going to be crawling over every waterway in the world, not to watch for pollutants, but to watch YOU. yes, you mr. "I believe everything they say on fox news" and you to, mr "The 2nd amendment has nothing to do with modern life, and refers to state militias only". For gods sake, won't someone think of the children?

If you are in london and a geek, wangle your way into a livery company, perhaps the Worshipful company of Information Technologists .
Then, apply for freedom of the city of London (detailed here).
