It is always much better to have a flexible upgrade and repair plan than try and force something to last much longer than it is intended. Make no mistake that consumer hardware is not intended to last 15 years.
I would much rather look at something like software of a data base that can upgrade smoothly in the future.

I think you are worrying about self driving too much. Self driving cars are not simply going to blindly following a path only to have a tiny nudge throw off everything. As it stands now if you want to backup large chunks of data such as an entire HD then you should not be going with DVDs. If you want to backup DVDs or small files then DVDs are fine.
Could you inject some type of padding or filler in to make the data appear less evenly distributed when in reality the filler simply follows some pattern that can be easily removed later? I know this is not going to actually make it more secure but it could obfuscate the fact that the data exists.

Are you high? The US government can and does "make money" out of thin air. They print off more money which does water down the value of existing money (inflation). You don't have to save in some area or tax more to have more money. The problem with printing off more money is that it benefits the government as they get more money to spend while hurting the people who currently have money such as the citizens. Most governments have an interesting in some rate of inflation because it reduced the true value of their national debt. The government is trying to do themselves a favor by printing off more money so they can spend their way out of problems and pay off their debt at the same time.
Ya this is the right way to think about it. They need to basically pay some lump sum for the past time you spent if they are going to close it down and take all your rights away. Dont let them make you think you earned the right to work for them with your past work.

A lot of people dont realize that FIOS may go to 20mbit but if you get a good ISP like speakeasy you can go to 15mbit without any port blocking or throttling.
