Now your "mostly" false. If by "target audience" you mean their upgrade "path" then yes. XP is designed to go into OEMs instead of ME. XP is NOT 100% win2k derived. XP uses the NT kernel which is tweaked to make version 5.2. This new tweaked kernel is then added with many other 100% brand new code. This is why XP actually IS one of the biggest changes. Not only is it a different kernel than the OS it replaces but it has many new features that if were somehow added to a 9x version it would still be quite a change.
Personally i get bothered more by the media and govt. Claiming you either protest the war or support the troops. Hell yes i supports the troops so dont get them killed? Isn't that supporting both sides? This is all part of the "your with us or your with the terrorists" mentality that is causing so much confusion.
The specs are indeed impressive. A 20 inch display running at 25 watts is wonderful. Not only are these going to be good for desktops but think about laptop uses. Longer battery life, better viewing angle for that presentation at the office, and most importantly a bright and vivid display that wont make your eyes hurt like some LCD's. Also in a few years these things will of course be cheaper but better to. These are simply prototypes and first generation models. Soon they will draw LESS energy and be brighter, lighter, cheaper, and probably cool (maybe not possible). So im not buying one yet (living off a student's income... ie slim to nil) but i can see a time where these things are too good to NOT buy. Whoever is selling these is going to make a fortune because as the old saying goes i predict they will almost sell themselves.
If Iraq is going to be so easy to attack why are they a threat? If we left them alone they would have no reason to want to hurt us. This whole thing is so confusing... we create a problem and try and solve it the same way we created it.
The point of a copyrighted material going into the public domain after a little while is a very good idea. A company or other copyright holder only needs to have control for a little while to make enough money for it to be worth the cost and time they put into making it. Copyrights were never meant to make people rich, they were put in place in order to encourage people to invent and discover new things. Somehow we have shifted from trying to encourage new ideas to trying to encourage money making. I dont know hwo this happened but it is sad because when a copyright makes money and goes into the public domain soon after everyone is happy, nobody is filthy rich but they are happy.
So could the pyramids be considered an open-source project... free as in beer? I guess it cant really since we have no idea how they built it... maybe its the earliest closed source project around.
Why dont websites make a list of the most common passwords and if a user requests that one it automatically says "sorry but that password is too common and is easy for hackers to guess... try a different one" then some advice on how to pick a good one.
If it is intended to be viewed as "real" such as the two towers then its not animated. If it is something like Waking Life where its real but animated over then its animation
Sorry but your math is off. Remember the whole 1024 bytes to a kbyte thing. 3 gigabits a second should come out to about 384 megabytes a second which is fast than U320's 320 megabytes a second but not by much. The added speed here is not a big issue as SCSI drives dont typically max out their available bandwidth for very long.
IMDB has nearly solved this problem. They use special algorithms to detect when people are just trying to throw the score off. They dont reveavl exactly how which is good otherwise someone would find a way to exploit it. I assume they do some standard probility calculations. It would be easy to take the scores people are giving it and find a bell curve. If people mostly rate it at say a "7" with "6" and "8" being closest to it and votes trailing off from there it is easy to tell what people really think. If you see spikes in the votes of a book like a lot of people voting "0" when very ew vote 1, 2, or 3 then you know they are trying to throw off the score. If you simply use a mean average then a vote of 0 would change the score much more than a vote of 5 if it was say at an average of 7, its best to not have the opinion of someone who REALLY likes or dislikes a book to change the score more than someone who really thought it through.
the anti-page-widening-troll filter butchered the link. Click here if you want it to work. I mean no offense but if you want to se an impression posting broken URL's to weboards wont help. I will assume your new to slashdot as you are an AC and seem to not understand. If you are truly new yet you seem like a regular geek then... what the hell man where have you been? you have missed some sweet ass trolling and karma whoring going on...
Although i dont understand some of what is going on in this thread i know man pages work great. One of the biggest praises i hear when i get my freinds to try linux is how wonderful the "man" pages are. Every newbie who switches to linux tells me its wonderful that they are there even if they are a bit long and the person wont read it all.
Also does anyone notice how the parent severl levels up discussed many important things yet EVERY reply to his post was about man vs. info.
Although i am not one to point out english mistakes in posts all the time please read your post out loud. Try not putting totally unrelated phrases in the same sentance wiht only a comma to buffer them. Your first sentance has no subject. Your second sentance has no verb. Maybe if yu combine the two it could make one sentance but you would probably also have to cut out a lot.
You guys dont know messed up. My district works like this: Preschool (-2-K) Elementary School (K-4) Intermediate School (5-6) Middle School (7-8) High School (9-12)
This is assuming you dont go to running start in which case you go to a community college for grades 11-12.
This is exactly the problem i mentioned. The bottom of the cd is just a clear layer. The top "sticker" area where the label is actualyl contains the date. Many people abusing the top is ok but really the bottom lasts better. Even if the bottom of the CD is horrably scratched you can always take off a thin layer from the bottom taking away most scratches.
The problem for MS is that they are more than "pesky". On the one hand they waste huge amounts of bandwidth on spam with hotmail. They recieve a huge number of spam becuase of their huge number of users. On the other hand they make money selling addresses and spamming on their own.
To them it's very simple. If they get their way they can make more money while cutting costs. Its what any business should do in America right? Personally i take this as evidence that our system is flawed. I am not going to bitch and complain about our system and exploitation but i do believe we should fight companies that try this, keep them in check.
Most Cheap cd's will last a decade and still be ok but i wouldn't count on them for much longer. CD's that use Cyanine dye should last about 50 years but cheap manufacturing will cause them to die out quicker. CD's using Phythalocyanine dye will last up to 100 years but are more expensive. When you are buying the quality discs you also are less likely to have defects create problems.
If you use some types of ink in pens or permanent markers to label your backups they can soak through the top coating into the data area and corrupt them. If you backup with cd's use cd safe markers.
Also cd's fall apart over time. They peel and fall apart. They stretch and strain. If you want them to last keep them in a constant temperature safe place. Change in temp. causes the plastic to expand and contract which makes it brittle and eventually crack.
If you are willing to pay a bit extra for the good cd's its worth it. I have had cd's with minimal use not work after a few years but it feels great to pull out a 10 year old cd and find that it works better than many new burned cd's do.

I dont believe we can choose to not eat. Have you ever seen someone just choose to not eat. In situations where people actually DO jsut stop eating there is something wrong. I just dont actually think that we have enough free will to choose to not eat. The consequences are so destructive that if you look at a case where someone DOES stop eating they probably are not living the same life someone who does eat is. Many disorders cause people to not eat and its obvious if someone isn't eating they have a problem. If someone claims to not be eating becuase it is their free will something is wrong. Since we are human we want to survive and its obvious without eating we wont survive. If someone doens't eat they obviously dont even want to survive which is considered not normal. Anyone who just gives up on surviving would be told that they have a problem that is most likely out of their control by a doctor.
You really shouldn't be purchasing Mandrake anyway. If you want to pay join the Mandrake club. They get their money and you get your OS so it's KIND OF like purchasing but you get so much more in the mandrake club than 3 ISO's and instructions.
Ok first of all it does matter a lot that they have these improvments and its NOT true that they aren't making money. They do have sources of income which for certain areas actually create a profit. The overall Mandrakesoft situation is different. Mostly because of their failed investments such as their Mandrake Online Learning plan. Once they go through bankruptcy and rescructure their spending they will be able to turn a real profit.
I dont understand why people are saying they are going away. The only place i hear about "Mandrake Linux is dying!" would be slashdot. I am surpirsed i dont see trolls more often screaming that since there are some good FUD opportunities here. If you read almost anywhere else about Mandrake all you see is people talking about the upcoming version which looks very good so far.
To address your first point last i will say that most definetly what they release matters. Even without an increase in income they can probably turn a profit so by releasing a better product they can get even more profit. You know... that's what business's do. If Mandrake can put in many more firsts for linux yet continues to improve their ease of use and auto-configuration, which they did in this release, then more people will join the mandrake club.
Also as a side note the Mandrake club is a great idea and i think if you download this and you like it you should join. Some people say that setting up a business on a subscription based model will scare off investors and you should buy the CD's instead. That is oh so very wrong. If MandrakeSoft can pull it's self out of debt and show everyone that their business model works i think we could potentially have many more sucessful open source companies make it.
KaZaA Lite is a really good program but can be abused too easy. It lets you "cheat" with the system so that you can be a bandwidth hogging leech if you really want. I find its useful for when i need to locate a file that otherwise i would be blocked from downloading becuase of ratios. This does not mean i am a leech. K++ lets me find files that are hard to get which i then share openly to others. I know that if i were to not share to p2p then im doing my part in killing something which i would like to use again.
So despite KaZaA's drawbacks of being abusable i still think it is better than BitTorrent which sounds like abuse waiting to happen to me.
That is exactly my point. Does this mean we actually have free will? Is there anyone who simply doesn't want food and shelter? Of course not, we all have certain requirements in life so of course we have certain things we must do. The only "free will" i believe i have is what i do other than work towards food and shelter. It makes me wonder how much else of my life i do without having any real "free will". I dont believe that we dont have any control but its obvious that many thing we do are not controled by ourselves. I think that the most "free" will we can have is when we finally understand things like our genes that control our lives.
Will it be leaked before then?

Win95 was hardly more of a revolution more than some of the new stuff today. I think the changes between XP and ME (which is replaces) are huge.
