  3. Asimov's laws are a crock on Douglas Hofstadter Looks At the Future · · Score: 1

For anything to understand and identify what constitutes a human life and what would threaten it requires a level of sophistication equivalent to that of a human. The three laws are a fairy tale and can't be encoded. To be able to discern the general shape of such a creature, Apes would fit the category as well. However there is more forms for intelligence besides human on this planet. Consider the various other members of the animal kingdom. Lack of verbal skills do not mean they are simply flesh machines. The likely early models for AI would be drawn from the modeling of animals and their behaviors.

I am going to point to a few books and leave it at that.

    the Matrix/Animatrix cycle

Dune (look into the back story on why they didn't like thinking machines)

Blood, the last vampire (night of the beasts) by Mamoru Oshii (of Ghost in the Shell fame) and Ghost in the Shell as well.

  5. Re:You say: "Defense"... on Pentagon Wants Kill Switch For Planes · · Score: 1

I had a friend working at NASA in Mountain View in 1994, they were successfully able to remotely land commercial size aircraft then. However the problem isn't that it's not doable, its that no airline would buy into this for the above mentioned fact. We have the capability to put alcohol lockouts on every car in America, but they only do it for known drunks, and it is far easier still to just deny them licenses and severe penalties for using a vehicle.

Taking Remote control of a aircraft which may be experiencing difficulties not related to so called terrorist activities would likely make a manageable problem into a full scale disaster. All you can really do in a real terrorism event is to pull the plug on the engine, that crashes the plane, for certain.

But was it terrorism or stupidity?

Partially true, the Republican controlled Congress and Senate were fully bought and paid for participants in Shrub's misdeeds, the Democrat controlled Congress sees no point in kicking the lame duck out when he's gone in January. However they are happy to let Kucinich toss mud on the little worm. 50 years from now when Shrub's legacy is taught in school the impeachment will be in the record, and it won't be a silly one like the one they hit Clinton with.
