Where might be the best place to find a readable and _holistic_ overview of global warming?
All the reports I@ve seen and read over the years never take in all the factors. I suppose that's because it simply hasn't been done or we just don't know.
The closest thing I've seen is the ISSI report and presumably work presented at Kyoto must have built on this.
But both of these reports tend to look at graphs of temp. change, CO2 levels etc, etc.
But there is growing evidence that we could be sitting close to a threshold level; when we go beyond a point the effect feeds itself rather than stablising. One example of the threshold effect over stabilisation is ocean Methane stores.
How can we be sure Global Warming/Sea-level change is due to us? Or even just us producing CO-2 when there are all these variables plus more:
- isostatic changes inc. rebound (the 'height of the ground changing) - sun cycles (including Spots, those loops and all the others; there's loads I can't remember) - CO2 and erosion. ozone related geological stores - ocean as a store for ozone related agents such as CO2 - vegetation: does it really help? rainforests don't slow or stabalise temperature all the time. Evergreen forests seem to increase CO2 output - Milankovitch and orbital cycles
A flow chart of variables is what I need to get things straight in my head.
IMHO with what little I know I feel that even if the earth was/is able to soak up our impact that impact is stored and remains with us; we can't eject the problem into space - if we did that would surely create a problem.
Batteries should be standardised? Or something agreed upon thier use. The thing is that all it takes is one company to patent a method and then no one wants to use it.
Or something because if we could buy our batteries from a seporate supplier we might buy the original product.
Where as at the moment companies integrate everything into one highly controllable product. While this gives them power over the final experience that the product gives it ultimately leads to a bad results.
An example of companies not working together. Old news, but always relevent. Companies who don't cooperate will be competing and that means one will die. Evolution.
Ok, I better make sure this comment isn't misunderstood!
What I was trying to say is that this knowledge that the article conveys has a real application.
It took me ages to accept that I'm Bi. Not Gay, not straight, just Bi. It is questionable and damn worrying that it's possible that you can scientifically determine your sexual orientation but I would have personally have found it of value. The value of this is outwieghed by risk, granted.
Original comment was:-
" For anyone troubled by trying to figure out if you're gay or not it could settle worries"
Panic follow up comment when I relised this could be misconstruded for me implying that people must be tested for gayness!:-
" (not knowing being a worry not actually the worry of being)"
I heard that there is a difference between Japan and here:
here we're more individual and over there they're a lot more social.
This is really noticable if you work for a Japanese company like Sharp. Working in a factory for Toshiba we noticed that in Japan they have them all stand up at the start of the working day to say team-like stuff alligience... wierd. I think they were hoping they could inspire the same team spirit over here:D
The QNX floppy demo heads in the right direction for what you want but not nearly enough. While it is graphical, boots easy, does word processing and browsing it's not linux, it's old etc, blah blah blah. I recommend everyone reading this post have a look because by doing so you'll understand what the poster wants; a click and go floppy.
muLinux is what I've been using. But to be graphical (X11) and the other things you need takes disk swapping (1 for each task) and a little time setting it up.
Once configured muLinux is your best bet.
All in all the situation could be better. People who have old computers with no cdroms are usually good enough to use a floppy distro like muLinux.
Hopefully one day they're be something better, it's a shame to make such a thing is a little harder than worth the effort.
Ok, hope this isn't redundant because it's stating the obvious and needs to be said.
The percievd wisdom is that games are stale;
they're unoriginal with not much progress being made. Little imagination and creativity, especially compare to what it used to be like.
While it's true that it's harder to be creative because the bar is raised in terms of things like graphics it's lots of thing related to this:
It's hard to get into a creative mood when your paycheck is resting on it.
PRAGMATISM and CREATIVITY aren't known to mix.
Also:-
You have to work in a team because there's more code => harder to just let your imagination run wild.
The same situation happens/is happening with music, around the money orientated side of it because people think too much.
You can't be original though reason alone. Logic can't create without luck.
To appreciate the setup try imagining what its like to try and make a living from art such as music. If someone asked you paint the best picture in your life how would you fare?
So what's the answer?
I think the thing to do is look at how the top advertising people do it. The really successful agancies have got to be the best bet for finding out how to make money and art mix.
It didn't really tell me anything new. I felt like I'd heard it all before. Kinda sounded exactly how you'd imagine it, even down to the individual character described of the people in power; yup they sound like the over-confident middle management, money driven.
But it did enforce what visions I already had.
----
On distrust:-
Well, we (English speakers) are known for our individuality; we're not known for our strength in groups we're not Japanese - we're known for having strengths as individuals and weeknesses in society or groups.
Infomation coming across the language barrier is at society level - the weekness. Imagine how Saddam feels when the 5th repeat of Friends comes on? He channel flicks to QVC... then back to find Jackass. What can be made of this culture? What values do they follow? Religion?
A PR disaster.
Yes, the world thinks America is full of fools. Why? - Because they're basing their judgement on the infomation they're getting and it looks bad. Of course it's not just TV it's foriegn policy, trade, economic size, religion, the lot.
We cannot hope to get anywhere without empathy. When world leaders talk, do they say "Ah, I can sympathsise and understand why someone would fly a plane into a building, from this I understand my enemy and I am albe to defeat him without bloodshed." Or at least reduce it.
Don't you ever wonder why someone would do this?! Why someone would lay down thier life to do this? They must be pretty annoyed right?
No empathy is an evil world.
We enter another war. But I doubt either side has actually read "The Art of War" ffs.
The trust issue is everwhere in the west; conspiracy theory, patents, copyright, secirity, terrorists - the lot. Why? Because we're socially lagged. Advanced as individuals MAYBE, but disconnected. We want to know who we can trust because we're putting our feelers out - trying to create a stronger society. Real progress will be made when there's a common interest... like a war, or oil, or the environment really going wrong.
Though I hate all the conspiracy theories they are less insulting than reality. I mean, is this what we're supposed to believe? Am I this stupid? Perhaps. Are we? Definately.
Because these are the advantages 4-Tracks offer. Can you take it round pubs or the sqat? Will it survive? Will it not inhibit making decent music?
Because of this I think a long record time and ability to quickly find the good stuff is important so you can just leave it going.
Also I'm guessing that multitrackers may work nice with computers. Since the software method is mostly free (especially since the ASIO sound-blaster drivers) you might as well try it. My preference would be to:-
- use the multitrack to jot down ideas / jam with mates
- get this onto computer
- polish it up / fiddle
The 'get it onto computer' stage is what I know little about. Slashdotters to the aid. Hopefully a nice Firewire link would be nice. Unfortunately multitrackers and the industry isn't quite like the video industry so this sort of thing may be unavailable:/
Finally don't dismiss minidiscs. Yes they are technically a bad idea but if there isn't any better... personally I like reliablity, proveness and removeable, cheap media over a HD for example.
The main message I say to you is
THINK PRACTICAL.
Slashdotters may give you lots of handy advice but wether you are happy using the thing matters most. Power is pointless if it is not used.
My taste in music that can be decribed is that for originality.
I've listened to a heck of a lot of stuff and it's becoming harder and harder to find new stuff.
I usually really like every one in 300 songs now, possibly more. So that's alot of listening.
Because of this I'd love to try this method of finding new music out.
But I wouldn't rely on it. Friends with similar tastes can be a good source, especially for trying something new. I have a freidn into Emo, he can introduce me to the best of that, another newPunk and another into 20's Jazz. They're the experts so I like to listen.
I'm impressed with the idea of running the phone software in JVM because this can nicely seporates
OSS Vs Propritory software
I think this'll help them. Just as well because getting the OSS and Propritory boundary unclear is bad for PR. I for one get pissed if source code is withheld.
To use linux as a selling point, giving all the OpenSouce asssociations to help sell the product, only then to withhold code is A ONE-WAY deal.
I suggest we continue to buy to buy these linux product as long as they continue to return developments to Linux+OpenSource.

Equilibrium...
When I hear the music I'll examine it as well and see how I can use it to create and mix with my own tunes.
This sort of thing much appreciated.
Could do with a few mirrors though eh? If only BITTORRENT/similar came with http/tcp-ip!?
Batteries should be standardised? Or something agreed upon thier use. The thing is that all it takes is one company to patent a method and then no one wants to use it.

Was an idea of mine in `89 i think or when Amiga was around.
I was only a kid and decided not to take it further since breaking a drive I thought possible.
Any other mad ideas other than printer music we've heard of?
- IP map, reliability
- DNS tests and location of servers
So what could an actual method to do this actually be?
The gauntlet is down.
It's ok, this penis is insured;
life insurance
Let them teach us to fund them. Just ensure they don't kill themselves.

"if the active agent in male perspiration could be isolated."
This _may_ be a media misquote.
The active ingredient they're talking about is probably Pheromones; the language of smells we also use, certainly for sex.
However what they may mean is that there is something else other than Pheromones in it.
Washing quietens the dialogue between people via smells making society a stonger influence over who's having sex than the individual?
Next time you get a hot flush notice the feeling under your arms - that's your body going for it.
Right, where's that pussy juice, I need me a pick-me-up.

I'd like to say more but it'd be offtopic.
If:
Closed Source = smaller audience
and:
Open Source = larger audience
How does this effect:
- focus?
- speed of working
+ quality
- useability
- depth of quality
- how have we furfilled the original goal?
With all this born in mind how does the license agreement fit in? If the license changes how does this effect development?

I'm happy for this to be edited but I'm not accountable for the result of course
The Free / expert / wait and hope option:-
:) !!
:)
- PARTED on a bootable distro.
QT-Parted gives you a graphical interface. Hopefully someone will add it to Knoppix for you.
The Mandrake bodge improvment option:-
- No need to go through the mandrake menus - just click on the left side to skip straight to the partitioning section
The not-free option:-
- beg/borrow/steal Partition Magic. Although it installs to Windows that installed program generates a boot floppy that can be used elsewhere.
fdisk / cfdisk option:-
- use a boot disk / cdrom to boot and use cfdisk or fdisk
Slashdot message me if you like

whaaat? standard arch, monitor? no VR headset and tongue operated keyboard?
Just out of interest,
what would be seen as the most impressive/rare/interesting XFree hardware setup could we now have with NetBSD?
