I own an IBM T40 Thinkpad and I just wish IBM produced consumer oriented devices. An IBM Pad Player would look bulky, but it'd feel rock solid in hand, lightweight, cold and clean. And of course, just like my T40, it'd be black alloy on a side with a "IBM Player" tag, and the other side black plastic, like the one they use on Thinkpads.
Damn it's so bad IBM doesnt make one of these devices.
to go to a university only to face a crowd of filesharing student can either be pictured as stupidity or courage, so let's at least give her that: she was coureagous. She ran into the wolves house!
About the filesharing issue? Depends on wether you recognize intellectual property as a valid concept or not...
Hey wait, this is France and Germany censoring Web contents. Please people before commenting on how bad is the situation of "freedom" in the US look at your own countries first!
Don't forget, the suckers who crashed planes into WTC&Pentagon were uneducated ones, they were brainwashed to ignore the most powerful insict even, life. Why act like them?
No, they were educated. Atta was an architect. Many others used to drink alcohol and were also "westernized". They were not denied their chance in Germany, UK, and whereever they used to plot the death of thousands. Uneducated people could never have done this. Now you're making me wish that they had been denied the chance...
I dont understand what the perception of NYT readers does here. Let's talk about experience, please.
My girl suffers from chronic epilepsy. She had to go to the hospital in Paris, where we live, for scans and EEG. She left the scan at 4:04pm. She went to pay, where someone told her: it closes at 4pm, come back tomorrow to pay or send a check by mail. Then she went to another lab to have her EEG. She arrived at 4h20pm, same hospital. Same thing here: sorry, we close at 4pm. By the way, there are queues to use expensive devices such as scans: 3 months.
My best friend's father is doctor. He works 6/7, from 8am to 11pm, with one break hour: 14hours a day. He spends 8hours with his patients, and 6 doing red tape.
Now, I have no "social security" (healthcare insurance from the State) anymore, because of unemployement. To get a minimal medical cover, I have to send so much red tape that I just gave up. I had to fill two forms, then I received a mail telling me that I had to send them back a "carte vitale" which I never possessed, and another paper, which I lost while moving from another city. What should I do ? I'm facing bureaucrats, not helpfull people paid for helping me. They have to enforce rules, not take care of my problems.
One of my friend's mother is nurse. She goes to her clients and provide care. Because she has "quotas" of work, she works 10 months and then reaches her "quota". After that, the healthcare system will not pay for care she provides. What do her clients should do ? Ask for another nurse they dont know ? They are mainly old people, needing more than care.
I also know of a kid who has a leucemia, poor kid. He's fighting death. His treatment costs a lot. But since social security, marvel of the world, only funds 60% of the treatement, his parents had to create an association to fund his treatment. Who said "free" ? It is not.
That is supposed to be in the "best healthcare system in the world". That's what we hear almost daily regarding our "social security". Well, I wish all hospitals were private ones, that I could pay for a private insurance that would require me to pay and not fill forms.
Oh, and if you think people here receive care even if they are poor, that's wrong. Last winter a few bump died in front of hospitals, when temp was 0C.
Governement products ARE inferior, especially healthcare, which is tied to individual's stories. It is a place where attention is important, and can not be provided by civil servants. The day gov produce OSes and software we will have the same problems that we have regarding healthcare. Software will be crappy, slow, unfriendly, features will take forever to be implemented...
It's just incredible to see how State officials can behave! Can't they just leave people alone ?
One guy didn't buy a new home: he loses months looking for another one. The seller sees his asset value plummet.
The old lady can't have an ambulance when she would need it.
Kids don't go to the same school as their neighbour's.
But what's the motive ?? MONEY. It is not CORPORATE GREED, it is STATE GREED. Why can't we hear nothing about State greed ? br>Enron and else sank, but I guess in 10 or 20 years some cities or States will still spend $1.000.000 a year to extort a few square meters to the neighbouring State or city, therefore earning $10K in taxes ?

"Government" is not inherently bad, you really should consider that possibility.
That made me laugh. Just consider the real world. How many countries are there on Earth ? How many different forms of governement ? Now, think that there are also "local" governement, such as city gov, "regional" gov, whatever they are called.
Now, please, find ONE governement that doesn't suck. Just one. Is there only ONE governement on Earth that doesn't suck ?
You can find thousands of bad corps, fraudulent CEO's, bad lawyers etc. But you can find Good corps, competent CEO's, good lawyers. There are MANY corps working for the good of the people, for nothing but just pure "greed".
Now, when corporations go "bad", that means, when they go Enron, or WorldCom, they just FAIL. They CRASH AND BURN. Oh, sure, there are a lot of people hurt in the process. Not as many as in a governement crash, ask the Argentinans! Ask the Russians!
Since I take that high speed train very often (60 or more times in the last 3 years), i can say they're on time 99.99% of the time.
It did not happen once that it was late, if you dont count strikes, which are periodic here in France.
Btw, no one ever died in a derailment, that's true. It even derailed at 300km/h but due to its structure it doesnt lay on the side, it keeps standing and stops. It derailed something like 10 or 15 times in 20 years also, thats kind of a record!
Last but not least, it goes at 300km/h all way north to south of france: 1027km in 3h30 from Lille to Marseille. Of course, every french people pay in taxes about 150euros/year (that 140USD) for that (9 billion euros of subsidies for SNCF last year).
Maglev are even more expensive, so dont even think about it: great tech, but no big deal compared to old tech being cheaper anyway.
between the axis Lille - Paris - Lyon - Marseille (thats 1027 kilometer). They are the 4 biggest cities of France. Paris -Lille is only a 50 minutes long trip, making the trip more or less like a subway ride. Many people live in Lille and work in Paris and vice versa now!
The first high speed track was inaugurated the 27th Sep 1981, and was renovated when Lyon-Marseille high speed track opened in June 2001. The max speed on the Paris-Lyon is now 350km/h. The commercial speed is 330kmh, the 20km margin is used when trains are late. I can witness on that because I take that line at least 20 times a year, and my train has never been late, and last year the trip took 2h now it's 1h50!
Actually, the tracks tend to become saturated, with a train every 2mn, but delays are rare, except on the newly opened Lyon-Marseille.
at J&R New York City: Iriver 10gb 329$+tax, Ipod 10gb: 299+tax.
Consider that Iriver has remote, case, FM, mp3 recording, hard-drive w/out drivers, the price difference is null.
True, Ipod looks sexier, but Iriver is just more bang for the bug.

"cliquetez ici pour la version française" is almost good, at least it is understandable.
Correct french is: "cliquez ici pour la version française".

"honey, your brainwaves makes me nervous!"
Oh, I guess I'll just have to wait for her to fall asleep...
