Everyone that flames PHP needs to go sit in the corner and remember not to break their magic bubble of personal space. First the slashdot article is about the book not the language, second use whatever works for your needs. If PHP works for you and like it thats wonderful. If not use something else, there's a lot of other options.
Where I live I can get Roadrunner or Ameritech DSL. Roadrunner is $44.95 a month includes the modem rental, and I have a 3mbit / 384kbps connection (although officially it supposed to be 1.5mbit) and it never goes out, EVER. Ameritech charges $40 for 768kbps/128kbps plus you need the modem rental and installation of the DSL line can caust $400 and take a month.
Unless your using a router your essentially on one very large LAN. Everyone on your node would be able to sniff packets from everyone else until your traffic hits the CMTS. This is why weird things like having the hostname and workgroup left as the standard pc manufacture name can cause your internet to slow down.
Sure, around 1996 the FCC passed a bill that would require the cable companies to support 3rd party digital cable boxes besides the ones that they rent out. Just as there's a the DOCSIS standard for cable modems, there's standards for the digital box. Any fairly new cable box should work on most digital cable systems, it does require that it be provisioned (authorized) on that cable system by enter the box number into the system.
When you got to a tattoo shop and say I want this tattoo the artist makes it and puts a bit of their style into it and it comes out unique to you. This robot will probably create the exact same tattoo for everyone that picks one out of a book.
Since I supervise the broadband services department of a major cable company in the USA I'll share my opinnion on the matter. Sure unlimited time, and (usually unmetered) broadband may make people a bit slower when browsing the web. However, the difference is that the websites can offer more content, and a richer experience than what would be a considered a resonable download time with a 56k modem. I also double as an ASP/SQL contractor and I have at times forgotten about the bandwidth limitations of our customers (internal and external) who may not be using a broadband pipe. I would think that as more people get broadband html in general will die, we will see more and more FLASH oriented sites (or whatever the latest and greatest technology is at the time.) Not HTML + Flash, but pure Flash and images will move from being jpgs and gifs to PNGs. Yea you can do all this now, but you would be leaving at least 50% in the cold.
You'd think a huge corporation like IBM would have enough copies of 'Jenna's built for speed' to around so employees wouldn't have to share DiVX's. Damn ecconomy.
You mean you actually have to *gasp* buy the games to play them online? Jeezus I know slashdoters are cheap but come on. Blizzard has been doing this forever but because their parent company is a foreign evil empire nobody cares. Get over it, if you want to use a Microsoft product you gotta pay for it.
Free is good, but the majority of the information collected isn't critical. So should the database fail we aren't really loosing information that will seriously hamper anything.
I'm sure it must be easier to find someone who knows PHP then it is to find someone who does cgi-bin c/c++ to maintain their sites.
We use PHP/Asp for many of our internal applications we use for monitoring network systems and integrate it with MySQL. Works very well.
~ Don't say in the auction listing that the CD will be on a CD-R. Just say that it is the original, un-altered cd. Put any questions feel free to email me (or something similiar) at the bottom of the auction. Ebay doesn't snoop through packages and unless they ask you or another user actually reports that you are selling music on CD-Rs they won't know.
My Toshiba Satellite with its 1600x1200 is bar-none the most gorgeous display I have ever seen. Granted I don't work in the graphics industry and I don't spend $600 on monitors. Everyone I work with always mentions how beautiful my display is and even our web designers and graphics guys always mention how much they like it. The only thing I wish it had was the ability to input from another video source. (You hear that Toshiba? Add a digital input!)

That old dude stole my patent and changed it to Tornado in a Can from Tornado Under a Bedsheet!
That is funny but seriously a VCR records analog which is legal to use for time shifting/sharing purposes. Digital copies are currently illegal.

I can't wait until someone tries a ride-by on one of those and falls off :) I'll be watching the news.
to drive-by shooting. :)
Now I can put those 8 486's to work and roughly have the power of a P2-300mhz and lower my heating bill all at once!

...lies within the flash of Russian Vodka.
who hates cell phones? What posses these people to constantly be rambling on about what they did last night? Oh right....they have a social life.

the obvious solution would be not to run WINE as root. The filesystem permissions should prevent excessive damage.

Add force-feedback to it and I see it as a huge hit within the porn industry....
