You've got to just love P2P for things like this. My country mirror is already doing a good impression of a three legged dog but the torrent has more seeds than a farmer at harvest time.
Which is how many, zero? Don't you mean sowing time?;)
Even if the average person has downloaded it 10 times, that still means over 10 million people are using it worldwide.
No, all it really means is that, if the average person downloaded it 10 times, 10 million people have downloaded it. You can't make any assumptions about usage from a download count.
Because other countries use the Internet much like we do, as a major component in much of their commerce. They don't like the idea of a major part of their daily economic and personal lives being controlled by another country where they have no say.
We're talking about administration of the DNS root servers here, this hardly equates with "controlling" the Internet. What exactly are these other countries afraid the US will do now, when it has been responsible for the root server administration for years already. What exactly has changed, besides the EU becoming more and more frustrated at their own incompetence and decided to throw a hissy fit about nothing?
If the Internet were developed in, say, Sweden, the US would be the ones complaining that the UN needs to take it over.
Well, yeah. But it wasn't the Swedes, it was the US. I think it goes without saying that countries will always act in their own (selfish) interests. Why should we expect otherwise?
Hi, let me introduce you to this thing called "web mail". It's "mail". On the "web". With a cool, nifty interface. The whole point of the service is the cool, nifty interface. It's what you're paying for. If you don't need the cool, nifty interface, but instead your primary concern is having POP3 access to email, why would you be looking at a web mail solution in the first place?
Why is it that corporations are exempted from acting like they "should" because their goal is to make money and please the shareholders (i.e., to be selfish), but when consumers decide they're going to be a little selfish too, it's "hurting business"?
It's all a balancing act. Google seems to be the only player in town that realizes advertisers and consumers have to compromise so that everyone walks away happy.
1) But I didn't have to buy another 250gb hard drive just to back up 20gb worth of data. You also have the option of backing up to external USB, flash drive, CDs, tape, or any existing drive that you already have.
2) True, different strokes for different folks I suppose...My OCD compels me to do a complete fresh OS install if any problems occur:)
I wouldn't jump to conclusions. I prefer RAID-0 setups for my working environment, supplemented by daily automatic backups of only certain data to a separate drive. The point is, there's no reason I need to have redundant backups for my \Windows directory, \Program Files, game installations, etc. All I need to back up are personal files, settings, and data. RAID-1 (et al) setups are simply a waste for me, because it's all or nothing - either EVERYTHING gets mirrored and you lose half your drive space, or NOTHING gets mirrored. I prefer to have the performance boost of multiple drives linked in RAID-0 while backing up only those things that I need to.
Well, here's an idea - rather than go the vigilante route, why not pursue the natural alternative: government control.
No, I'm not talking about enacting more laws, I mean having the government declare a "war on spammers", where DDoS attacks are used against them by the military in a digital carpet-bombing campaign.
That would take care of the whiny limp-wristed liberals crying "slippery slope" and "no better than them", and it would satisfy the bloodlust of the neocons. We could even hold spammers indefinitely in military prison camps by labelling them "enemy combatants".
I like how the author of the article uses anonymous sources to slam PJ without any merit. PJ not only made 1.5 Billion for New Line he finally made New Line a major player and he deserves every penny due.
Wow, had to do a double take there. For a moment I thought I was reading Groklaw:)
Hmmm... I guess someone needs to go to your library, tell them that they are you - they can even print a fake barcode on any old library card since barcode techology is open and freely available to anyone and everyone. Then, they can surf for child porn on your account. When the feds come to your door, you can explain to them that it is a terrible idea for the library to go to every measure to ensure that patrons are who they say they are.
I think you're missing the point somewhat. Why is it so god damned necessary that the police be able to personally identify you based on library usage in the first place? I'd rather have that plausible deniability there - "It might not have been me, someone could easily have stolen my card." In fact, I'd much RATHER just have library access be completely and totally anonymous.
Oh, and on another note - is it just me or is the invocation of Child Porn becoming a new Godwin's Law? Is there an epidemic of people stealing library cards to surf for child porn in public or something?;)
I still don't understand why the Jedi Council couldn't have just bought her freedom in the first place. They can afford all these fancy ships, all those hundreds of robes, they can outfit their Jedi-University with all manner of flashing-light geekiness, yet they can't friggin' buy the freedom of THE CHOSEN ONE's own mom?
Yes, Anakin, give in to your fear, your hatred, and your journey toward the dark side will be complete!
You know, this may seem totally random, but what I appreciate about this post is the fact that he provides an interesting and relevant link to a similar story without resorting to self-righteous babbling about how it's all been done before and Slashdot is so behind the times, and how stupid we all are for not knowing about the previous stories. I've been getting tired of those posts:) Sometimes, it's just about getting the information out, not about who did it first.
Dude, take it easy. It's a cute, funny little article. You're "ashamed" and "disgusted"? Come on, now, seriously. Maybe you should go find something more important to get this worked up over. This kind of hyperbolic wailing reminds me of the manufactured shame and disgust generated by right-wing nuts intent on censoring the free will out of society.
Why would they do that? The idea is not to offer the customer the best deal, the idea is to relieve the customer of as much money as possible and send them on their way.
You forgot another one:
>I know exactly what everyone's going to say, no need to post. (+5 Funny)

The mods will be the judge of that, thanks ;)

Um, yeah....but Apple made the iPod. Are you suggesting the maker of a product is evil because they want to make money off of it?
Or, more accurately, "volcanoes" :)

But, how is that our problem, again?
Why is it that corporations are exempted from acting like they "should" because their goal is to make money and please the shareholders (i.e., to be selfish), but when consumers decide they're going to be a little selfish too, it's "hurting business"?

What's an aneCuth?
Correction, it means we have added one site per 350 people this year. In total, we have about 12 websites for every person on the planet.
Mod parent up, +5 Heaviest Concentration of Mixed Metaphors!
Just for completeness: Saturn comes from Greek Cronos, Uranus from Greek Ouranos, Pluto from Greek Hades.

So, not quite as stupid as you claim.
Final cost: $1900. Is it worth it to spend an extra $3100 for a 10 fps gain in Doom3?
Final verdict: Build it yourself. You'll be happier and save money.

Think of the possibilities!
Any attempt to make a corrective post regarding another poster's spelling will inevitably result in said post containing spelling errors of its own.

Not only does your little script provide a humorous meta-summary, it also apparently grants the ability to travel back in time by one year :)
