  1. Short but sweet on The Happy Medium Of Game Length · · Score: 3, Interesting

Beyond Good & Evil was a fantastic game, but a short one. But I gladly take the 12 hours of BG&E over the 50 hour snore-fests that are Final Fantasy games.

Correct me if I am wrong here, but the PS2 has been the only major console to ever have backwards compatability. Why do people keep talking like backwards compatability has been some sort of console mainstay for the past 20 years?

No doubt the Xbox2 controller will be so large it will house its own power generator.

  4. Re:The plan.. on Nintendo's Early 2005 Strategy · · Score: 1

I don't think Nintendo's decision to stick with carts in the past was based on "fear of change." Cartridges have next to zero loading times compared to optical media and can provide a seamless gameplay experience. Nintendo only moved to discs when the disc streaming technology had finally gotten to the point where you could enjoy the same level of seamless interaction as a cart. Personally, I love the fact that when I play Metroid Prime or Zelda that I never have to see a "Loading" screen. What's that you say? Cartridges and cube discs can't hold as much as a DVD?!? Oh no! Now the developer has to fill the game up with gameplay instead of gigabyte upon gibabyte of useless pre-rendered FMV. Boo hoo.

Maybe it's because Soul Caliber II is from 2003.

See, they give these awards out on a yearly basis...

  8. Re:Almost a given on Spider-Man, Star Wars and the Power of Myth · · Score: 2, Insightful

I really have to laugh at people who interpret a three day record breaking box office total as proof that Spider-Man is one the best movies ever made. Just look at the previos record holder: Harry Potter. While I personally enjoyed it a lot, I held no delisions that it was a classic / great / timeless movie. While $114 million dollars (or any box office record) is impressive by any means, arguing that such success is based soley on the underlying mythology / values / "our desperate-attempt-to-regain-pre-9/11-innocence" or whatever is just stupid. Take a look at the top grossing movies of all time. Most of them are mindless popcorn flicks. That's why when "serious" movie reviewers' (and editorial writters like JonKatz') opinions don't sway people one way or another in convincing or detering them from watching movies, they feel the need to write these boring expositions and psycologically analyze the American public as to why we all went and saw a movie that they may or may not have given a good review to. No one seems to be able to live with the fact that Spider-man's success was probably due to the $50 and it just being a cool movie. Determining a movie's quality based soley on it's money making power is just sick. That means we would have to admit that Home Alone is one of the greatest movies ever made... And I don't think any of us would want t o do that.

  9. Re:How many do you think Two Towers is going to wi on LoTR Takes 4 Oscars · · Score: 2, Interesting

Unfortunately, the likelyhood of Two Towers getting a Best Picture nomination is slim to none. The original Star Wars was nominated for best picture and lost (to Annie Hall no less). Empire, which is leaps and bounds better than A New Hope, wasn't even nominated. In fact, A New Hope was considered to be sappy, un-artistic commercial drivel aimed at kids and therefore ultimately of no consequence other than a slick looking marketing tool for selling action figures. Annie Hall was more artistic. Fast forward 25 years. Star Wars is responsible for influencing American culture more than any other movie ever made and, IMHO, ultimately a more valuable and important movie than Annie Hall could ever have been. Why was Annie Hall picked then? Because even though everything in Empire was better it was viewed as simply "more of the same". The Tow Towers will be viewed with the "been there, done that" attitude. The problem lies in the basic philosophy of the people that make up the Academy, who, like all celebrities, are obssesed with themselves and their own superiority. Their definition of Best Picture is only refers to the ethereal artisitc qualities rather than the overwhelming impossibility of making a movie like LOTR and succeeding. Oh well. In twenty five years when nobody remembers what in the hell A Beautiful Mind was about but we are all watching the LOTR trilogy with our grand kids with nostalgic tears in our eyes, we will all know what really was the best picture.
