They're talking about size. 100,000 tons of material can be sent in multiple launches but a 100,000 ton machine is too big to send. Of course at 10,000 dollars per pound it's too expensive to send too at current costs to send a payload into orbit. Of course they're working on that. Most Sci-Fi authors envision using asteroids to mine for materials instead of boosting it out of a gravity well. Maybe my great grand children will live to see it.

I was going to work early one morning after working several weeks of 12 hour days without a day off. Tired, half awake, I reached over to tune the radio to a hard rock station to help me get fully awake and looked up just in time to swerve away from some idiot jogging on the side of the road. Not a side street or subdivision but a state highway with a 55 posted speed limit. He came within about 3 feet of getting mowed down. I had no further trouble staying awake the rest of the drive as my heart was racing. I still shudder to think how close I came to killing someone because of a few seconds of inattention.

  6. You may be right, my experience is limited to non urban areas. The only time I lived in a big city my residence was courtesy of the USAF. Everywhere I've ever lived it is a lot cheaper to buy. Especially if you itemize on your taxes and can claim the interest payment. Although now if you have a very expensive house that is limited to 10,000 in interest with the new tax law. Where I live now you can buy a decent house for 140,000 grand. Houses at that level rent for 1500 and up. Mostly up. Even double-wides that you can buy for 55,000 rent for 850. Of course you can rent a house in a combat zone for 500.

  7. I worked for the USAF for 8 years as an Airman and 30 as a civilian. I went from an HP85 for line monitoring at a comm site in 1983 to workstations in an aircraft hangar in 2017. I remember going from win95 to win98 and it was good. We went to win2000 and it was good. XP Pro upgrade was good. Then Vista came.....over 50% of our workstations were down at any one time for over a year. After a few years we got Win7 and it was so wonderful. I use Linux at home but Win7 was as stable as I could wish and a million times better than Vista. They avoided 8 and when I retired last year the big dread was Win10. Nobody likes it at home, I know a bunch of people that bought Macs just because of Win10. I'm glad I'm going to miss that adventure.

  8. You have to live somewhere. I bought a house in 1992 for $67,000. I spent about 18,000 dollars for maintenance and stuff over a 15 year period including a roof job. During that time I paid 560 dollars a month mortgage, well by the time I sold it it was 620 a month due to increases in taxes and insurance bundled in the payment. I sold it for 94,000. Before I bought that house I was paying 700 a month for a house that was about 2/3 the size with a lot smaller lot. After I sold it I rented a house for 8 years that cost me 950 a month and it was smaller also. I then bought another house when I retired paying cash. I hadn't intended to rent that long but circumstances pinned me in a bad situation. It's always cheaper to buy and unless you get a crazy situation like the housing market crash you ordinarily make money. There are exceptions of course like any investment strategy. But still, you have to live somewhere and renting is more expensive.

  9. Really, two thirds of the reported average salary of an engineer at Apple is still 100,000 dollars. That's enough to pay the bills I would think. Yeah, 50,000 dollars a year is a lot to pay but real estate is an investment. Usually it sells for more than you paid.

The thing is that the twitter post is still up. "Breaking: Russian hackers penetrated U.S. electricity grid through a utility in Vermont" and that is getting retweeted ever since. WAPO knows full well that most twitter users never read past the headline. That's the effect they get. The number of retractions that WAPO and many other MSM outlets have been forced to make have grown astronomically since Trump arrived on the scene. The most charitable reason I can think of for this is that they've decided that they must get everything out to the public as fast as possible and that their normal vetting of info must be suspended. I suspect they know though, that if they're wrong and forced to retract, the damage will still be done to their target. Almost all media in this country have ceased to be journalists with honor and integrity and are instead advocates. I include FOX in this before you start on that, they clearly share in this game.

And yet WAPO still, to this day, has a twitter post up that says "RUSSIANS hacked US power grid." Despite the fact that it's been admitted, even by them, that they were wrong. In light of the fact that we see MSM outlets give up their integrity and journalistic principals in pursuit of bringing down Trump to the point they've decided the end justifies ANY means at all, you can't blame people for not trusting proven liars.
