    I followed the link, then downward several levels without seeing any claim this was ever in the top 500. Perhaps I just missed the text. But there were pricing and offers of help, nonetheless, the claims seemed to be circumspect given the performance level of your claim.

    Is this my failure, or is your link just FUD too?

    The basic problem with this charity is that it always seems to be tied in to Microsoft product purchases. Many of these same school systems might well be forced to expend cash and pay fines for not having sufficient number of licenses.

    Charity? Or simply another <I><B>sharp</B></I> business practice?

    Do a thought experiment:

    1. propose dropping one or two staff members.

    2. calculate the cost of an emergency where temporary (higher cost) staffing is required to fix an application that they may lack expertise or simple knowledge.

    3. add the direct cost to the business for the missing application where what the work performed by the computer now has to be done by the staff (probably by hand) with more probabilty of errors or in the extreme case dispensed with for lack of personnel.

    4. if those figures are not in your favor there is not much long term hope for either the IT staff or the company.

    I have a Samsung 1710 on this machine, but it is running on a ML-1210 driver, because I am running on an older version of Linux distribution: Mandrake 9.1 Pro. While it runs well, I was under the impression it was not a duplex printer (even when I was trying to run it unsuccessfully as a ML-1710). Check that out prior to purchasing that model.

    Regarding its performance, it has been reliable enough for my son under heavy use, albeit for a short period.

    MS need not lose the majority of the users for it to be forced to really compete based on quality issues.

    If they lose as much as 20 - 30% of the Office software market, they would be subject to credible threats of abandoning their product line by corporations. Indeed, a lost 10% would be more than enough by early adopters to employ this scam to reduce their pricing from MS. [This has already happened earlier this year, without a measurable decline in the MS Office market share.]

    At this point the major cash flow is from the OS and Office applications, having lower profit margins on either of these product lines could kill a lot of Microsoft's ambitions.

    Assuming you are correct, that would make them a prime candidate for a Harvard Business School study of a successful business pursuing a failed business model.

    The University of California did not agree with the USL contention of ownership of certain files. Indeed, they were quite obviously dubious of the claim. Instead they said if USL wished to pursue other parties it would play no role in their defense until it came to searching U.C. records.

    Not too many months ago, I was asked by one these cold calling outfits why I just did not add my name to the "Do-Not-Call" list. I told them I expected that list in the future to be a marketing source.

    While I still get some <i>marketing</i> calls they are usually taped messages that I immediately terminate. My problem at present is keeping cool enough to determine if the person I am about to insult is really a call we are waiting for!

    Open source, from the repeated interviews and articles quoting the principles at Sun, has a much different meaning than most here would have of the same words. Retaining control will probably be one of the requirements Sun has. Hence, like Java interaction with the users as feedback as seeing some of the code is probably as far "Open" as they will go. Moreover, other actions indicate despite their probably superior product they still envision themselves as the Guiding Light. Hence, know best how to proceed. I suspect they will be sorely disappointed.

    I do not like knocking Sun, they have done well at other times. It's just does not seem their heart is in it this time.

    It does on Mozilla 1.7.3 that I use for /., but when I bring it up on FireFox 1.0 PR it is excellent.

    I agree that you certainly do not need any do gooders of any liberal strip ruining your great state from whatever location. Now how about taking a smaller bit of the Federal taxes that support your independent, freedom loving life styles?

    What about those that live near the state line?

    Only pay that state's flat tax and nothing in the home state?

    Why not a fence around the state that reads your milage as you pass (<I>or gives you a ticket as you pass driving in reverse</I>) and you get billed monthly on your total in state milage?

    Their latest few animated features were so bad I cannot even remember their titles, though I sat through their trailers and saw their advertisements. One more thing, I certainly did not bother to go see them either as most of the population.avoided them too.

    Never saw III so while she might lack real talent as an actress she is quite a good director.

    Of interest, I read the author of the book "Godfather" and Coppola both thought writing and directing the movie was beneath their talents. [Sorry not sure where I read it, but it was in one of these: BBC, NYT, Guardian, Salon or CNN. Check it out because the writeup states that III was a disaster, because Coppola reverted to his higher artistic style]

    Indeed it landed years ago on an odd shaped space rock where it remains. Moreover, it tested other features like robotic flight and other risky technologies. [Note robotic is not remote control.]

    I remember that event, I hate using the word incident for wiping out a Canadian unit that was just practice firing.

    Of course, the pilots escaped the full wrath because there were embarrassing factors involved: essentially drugging up the pilots so that they could be on patrol longer. Again nothing I have seen has shown that there was any real recognition of command error.

    You should recognize, that until recently the National Guard was not called out for our "small wars". They just do not have the same level of training that the regular military <i>enjoys</i>.
