5 years ago when I was still in HS, they had a quake tourney... don't know if it got canned or not. rock on. if I ever work at a school, I'll be sure to push for something like this.
and to think, all you'd have to do is rot-13 the stream... so much for that. any hardware that is hardcoded to look for something will fail because there will always be at least one person smarter than the machine who can help everyone else outsmart it. someone needs to hit these people with a clue-by-four.
just remember, one person CAN make a difference. Ask that kid that's in jail for de-css, or the russian guy who broke the adobe bookreader thing....or ask Linus.
point is we're human, we're free to do what we want. there is no way that this will ever work as long as the human spirit is entact.
that's why I'll be standing out in the parking lot talking to anyone who walks out the doors. Last year I spent 2 hours talking to some guy that I thought was RMS....turns out he was just a janitor.
however, it says here you develop drivers. how does one get into that sort of thing starting out? obviously you've been doing it for a while. how would someone who has a base understanding of assembly and C get into this? it's a big field, and I wouldn't know where to start, but I would like to help some day.
I've been trying to find blues travelers cover of johnny b. goode for 3 years now. the only place I've EVER found it was on napster. it was from a tape someone made at a concert. imagine john popper soloing on that song with his harp going at 3 times the normal tempo.
I'd gladly PAY for that song, however I've yet to find a place that sells it, including www.bluestraveler.com Napster served one purpose and one purpose ALONE for me- rare bootlegs of songs the bands never put on cd. Oh, that and john mayer
that is one of the most competent and well thought out posts I've ever seen. you bring up a great point- html would, I guess, be opensource. Anyone who says *opensource* is doomed to fail, then say "oh yea, obviously, that whole HTML thing was just a fluke, sure glad it died out in the earily 90's after every READ EVERYONE ELSE'S CODE, LEARNED HTML AND MADE THEIR OWN PAGES!"
you're correct- that html is by nature opensource. I have a new sig. if I could, I'd mod this parent up.
"I think it all boils down to being responsible adults to those who aren't yet adult enough to be responsible."
sorry to use you as a ramp, but here goes.
your implying that those who have kids ARE responsible adults.I knew a lady who have 7 kids by the time she was 27, the oldest being 12. She was in no way responsible. so should the government monitor all of our kids to protect hers? abso-fuckin-lutly NOT. this seems to be the argument for this kind of legislation- it protects children whos parents won't protect them. IMNSHO they should take a look at these parents and determine if this kind of neglect is in every facet of the childs life. they should worry about the kid getting the shit beat outta him by his drunk father more than they should about him seeing a pair of tits on a library monitor.
I think the poster was using "subversive" in a lighthearted fashion... you know, the stuff her parents might not like her having, like condoms and beer. he's trying to prepare her for the real world, not her parents fantasy world.
Supposing you have a girlfriend, does she follow her parents ideals? when my girlfriend told her mom she wanted on the pill... well, let's just say the next family dinner was a little uncomfortable.
some people here can't quite read between the lines.
It's sites like Virtual Holdings that need to be shut down. I completely agree with you. They are *the* villian.
Treat them as such.
I've never supported or encouraged attacking(DoS) people like this, but dammit, someone needs to grab them by the balls and HURT them. figure out a way to run up THEIR bills. track theirs asses down and PROSECUTE THEM. Make it cost too much for them to continue doing what they're doing.
I hope this AG nails monsterhut up by the gonads and not only runs them out of business, but sends the brainchild behind it to jail.
In all truth; yeah, we just did. We were one of those unforseen accidents. the sad part is, while we had nothing to do with their tool(besides curiousity to see it) we will be blamed as something trying to prove it doesn't work.
funny how our enthusiasm killed it, huh?
People who wanted to see this project fail will say, "see- it's CRAP. they second they made it public, someone proved them wrong!" even tho we're not what the tool was supposed to protect them against.
EVERYONE knows the number they're looking for is gonna end up being 42. every other pair will be unstable, and the meaning of like will be proven to be 42. and douglas adams will rise from the grave and lead us to salvation.
wow, everyone's putting out a new relase, even slackware(never realized how apropropriate the name was until now.) maybe I'll have to fire up a test box and try it again.
The question is; why? slackware has a new one, redhat, mandrake, suse, debian(shortly)... even the packages like mozilla and kde are having long awaited releases....
maybe we're about to stumble on the turning point on the computer era... maybe 10 years from now we'll look at the 1995-2002 as the dark ages of the operating systems.
As a side note, I showed my girlfriend the article about sherwin williams, and she replied, "this linux thing isn't going away, is it?"...and now she's ready to learn.
think about it, have you actually LISTENED to a clear channel station? around here, they're usually the ones pumping out brittney and the rest of the rotten ilk. they're just a TRL that plays more than 50% of the song.
let RIAA and clear channel pummel each other. if RIAA makes it easier for "independent stations" to be heard, good for them.
I'm NOT a RIAA fan, but sometimes even the worst of people/groups can hit the nail on the head, even if they don't use the best methodology.
fuck clear channel and fuck the RIAA. I hope the RIAA bankrupts clear channel and exposes themselves as frauds in the process.
be careful how you word... "...pick a browser... and integrate it with the environment..." pot....kettle.... seriously, if they do that, they better make DAMN sure that they make the browsers flawlessly interchangable or else they just gave MS a stepping stone.
you actually make a good point- I woulnd't be suprised if EVERY branch of every government started looking for an alternative to MS right now.
MS basically told the government "hey, you know that stuff we sold ya? it's CRAP! we pocketed the money! We ripped of you AND your country, and most of the world for that matter! but, we don't want to hurt your feelings, so we're gonna focus on fixing it, 'security is our top priority'....not really, we're just gonna 'start from scratch,' with the same old code and sell it to you for twice the price! muahahaha....wait, where are you going? nonono, open source is bad, remember!? Bad USA!....doh!!"
as my dad is fond of saying, "they just stepped on their own dick."
no offense to final fantacy fans, but I've noticed game makers are spending more time on stories and less on playablility. lets think about this for a moment.
what was the storyline for: mario.... a plumber got sucked down a drain to another world to save a princess that was captured by a giant turtle/dragon guy. zelda.... decent storyline, but exceedingly predictable, save the girl, no plot.
both were kickass games. the characters are developed just enough stylistically that the storyline doesn't matter anymore. it's the game that matters, and that's why these will succeed.... if your looking for storyline from a plumber and his friends, your outta luck.
as long as they don't fuckup and make the game boring.
5 years ago when I was still in HS, they had a quake tourney... don't know if it got canned or not.

*setting down his tech support headset*
um, is that such a good thing?:)
at least the mafia say they're "protecting you".
these jerks won't even give you that!:)
they just protect big business.
and to think, all you'd have to do is rot-13 the stream...

so much for that. any hardware that is hardcoded to look for something will fail because there will always be at least one person smarter than the machine who can help everyone else outsmart it.

we crucified enron but we're letting microsoft go?!
W T F?!
they're a known criminal who uses underhanded business tactics.
I'm a bit out of the loop, but with wallstreet looking into everyone who looks fishy, shouldn't microsoft be on top of the heap?
how many significant digits do you have to have?:)
windows!=shit
keep in mind, shit is free.
call it manure and you can charge.
windows=manure
I have no Idea who you are.

well, a topilogical map WOULD sorta be outta date-with the mountain buster missles and giant-ass potholes now covering the country...
like it or not, the us millitary did some MAJOR terraforming over there.
since when has slashdot been about quality?:)

/me deletes another 50 spams out of his account.
bastards.
they better watch out, if they try to get around THAT, it might be considered a copyright-protection circumvention device:)
wouldn't it be funny if that hardware was illegal in the US, but legal everywhere else? so much for land of the free...
