  1. CAST's Analysis of the homepage on Australia Orders Olympic Web Site Accessible to Blind · · Score: 5

For those who care, CAST.org has a neat tool called Bobby which can analyse web pages and report their 'readability' for the visually impared.

    Please head on to http://www.cast.org/bobby/

type in http://www.olympics.com/eng/home.html and send the request for processing.

Interesting to note that, at this stage, Bobby does not report any automatically detected Priority-1 errors. But thats just for this specific page.

  3. Overdoing it all on On The Perplexing Prevalence Of Plug-Ins... · · Score: 3

Overuse of plugins has always been bad.
Some websites require flash not for decorative content but critical stuff like navigating within the website.

Others have JAVA navigation bars. Generally, I surf with javascript/java disabled so as to avoid the popups and reduce the risk of netscape crashing on me.

There are other plugins that just SUCK. An example is vivo. While vivo movies are small, have you ever tried seeking a specific spot in a vivo movie? Tried rewinding or fast forwarding? I downloaded a couple of anime movies in vivo and whenever I need to re-view a specific portion, I need to see the WHOLE movie over again.

This is a typical case where I would prefer Real content or the plain old mpeg 1 format.

Web designers, remember that not everyone has feature-packed browsers. There are times I need to download something but wait... I want to do that on my shell account with wget. Duh! I need to have java/javascript enabled or some other fancy plugin to even ENTER the site.

Please, if you really really need to design a whole website in flash or director or whatever plugin, consider making a 'normal html' version also. PLEASE.

Some of you might argue that we are no longer in the console days and I am just old-coloured. Thats up to you. I will be just one less visitor to your site, right? Who cares about the small minority of die-hard geeks who love lightweight, console (insert favourite) stuff? We are still users who wish to visit your website. Consider us.

Strangely enough, I looked for known URLS of the Ku Kluxx Klan, none showed up.

Hi, I do not live in the USA nor I know much about US laws.

Here is something I have been wondering about. We are constantly arguing that DeCSS is NOT used to COPY DVDs but its just an aid to VIEWING DVDs.

However, how will you show this to a judge in USA?
Isn't it possible for defendants to bring a DVD Recorder in court, copy a DVD bit-to-bit *LIVE*, play the copy and show the judge that DeCSS is not about COPYING since it has not been used in the process?

Then, if the ruling says that DeCSS is illegal, I believe, DVD recorders should be outlawed as well.

Can something like above be done in a US court?

Dont flame me or something if the above idea is just stupid.

Well the lawyers have really goofed up by targeting the wrong people.
Its a bit like when slashdot was named as a defendant in the DeCSS saga :)

I have visited the website and I find it very very similar to a yahoo homepage and I could not find something like "This site is a parody and is in no way affiliated nor endorsed by Yahoo!"

Moreover, the Yahoo! wording is used and no attempt has been made to change it so that it could mean a parody, like YaHooka! had done in the past.

Well, a co-worker believed it was a Yahoo! site.
I would too, at first sight if I had not followed this story on slashdot.

"Oh yea sysadmin, thanks for your customers' credit card numbers. I am gonna have some fun this month"

Just imagine how seriously this can hurt the business. People get informed that the website has been "owned by some elite hackers' and the credit card numbers they used to purchase stuff there are ...ummm.. owned.

No matter what the website does to re-assure the customers that vital data has not been broken into, it will still lose MANY customers.

Will you purchase from ..lets say Amazon if their website gets defaced with a similar message as above?

Lets see, one can make mp3 file (legal and illegal) available via FTP servers, HTTP servers, IRC fserves, etc.

Will the RIAA sue the makers of the diverse servers?
Instead of colliding with a big corporation, apparently the RIAA prefers to sue smaller entities who, even though may win their case, may
plead guilty because of the lack of money to defend their case.

Last time I checked, there were loads of illegal material on free services such as Yahoo Geocities,
Angelfire, Xoom etc. and among them, were mp3s

RIAA better have lots and lots of bucks to sue each and every one of them.

Remember, tools are not malevolent. They are used in malevolent ways.
