This is slashdot, so I'm not surprised you'd be unable to make a conclusion that requires you to think about things in a light other than white or black. I'll spell it out for you. What Apple's good at is not necessarily always coming up with an original idea, but at making an idea or feature actually easy to use. Let me repeat that, so you get it. They're good at making technology easy to use. Got it? What good is a device or application that has every feature you could imagine or want, yet no one understands how to use it, what the feature is, why it matters to them, or how to find it? The current state of user interface on windows and linux is so bad, that Apple probably doesn't even have to try that hard to make something that isn't crap in comparison. So rather than looking down upon every person you feel isn't capable of "dealing" with the complicated windows world, consider most would rather their computers just fucking work. Hope that helps.

Another big reason is battery life. There's a lot more overhead with bluetooth, a constant connection maintaining protocol, as opposed to an event driven model for IR which only has to use power when it actually wants to send a command. which would you prefer, battery life of a few days/weeks or a few months/years?

For Mac development, the free XCode tools are good, however I would look into CodeWarrior because ObjectiveC, in my opinion, is an antiquated and bastardized attempt at object orientated programming, CodeWarrior offers C++ access to OSX programming API's.
I can tell someone's never done modern development for Mac OS X. At all. First off, obj-c is a MUCH better OOP environment than C++. Check out my tutorial for a whole host of good reasons why. Categories, posing, dynamic method forwarding, delegates instead of subclassing, no confusing static AND dynamic allocation, no multiple inheritance, NO TEMPLATES, amongst many other things that C++ just plain sucks because of. Also, CodeWarrior is a horrible (and expensive) dev environment compared to the free Xcode environment.

But where's the incentive? Are the managers and big wigs at Microsoft the ones creating the millions of lines of source code or is it the highly skilled engineers of whom they depend upon? I think the disparity between managerial and engineer pay is becoming rediculous. They may coordinate our work efforts and tell us what to do, but without us they wouldn't even be able to market the products they sell and for that we should be getting incentive to innovate and care.

I'm not necessarily trying to defend Apple here, but why are they at fault? Because they provided their customers "faulty" batteries? Apple provided the same lithium ion batteries as every other manufacturer. So because of the natural physical properties of the battery, it's going to diminish in charge capacity over time. There's no secret to this. Apple already remidied the situation: you can get your battery replaced for $50 by Apple. This lawsuit is stupid. I guess I should sue Sony and IBM for providing laptop batteries that fail after 2 years too?
