I think I *am* thankful that I work for a company where people do not know much about IT. I work for a civil engineering design firm, a small shop w/ 10 desktops and a couple of laptops. The *official* network admin is a person who logs on remotely. I am the unofficial on-site network guy (and honorary). The following few instances intially frustrated me, then amused me, and then finally helped me decide that I had had enough and I gave up my unofficial IT duties:
a. People would use MS Outlook and download their emails from the server. With a pop server and "leave messages on server" unchecked, you can imagine what might have happened when we had to format a couple of machines.
b. We use AutoCAD (v. 2005/2006) wherein the recommended (or minimum? I forget) system requirements are 1 GB of RAM. Of course, we had 2 CAD operators with 512 MB machines. AutoCAD would crash left and right, and I had to go and help them recover files.
c. Windows updates are a joke in our office, and despite repeated reminders, people simply do not upgrade. (I uderstand this is the rule and not the eexception).
d. The Windows 2003 Server (Dell Small business server) often has the Admin logged on, the monitor on, all in a very visible and high-traffic (human) place.
e. Tape backups were a joke till they learnt the hard way how important monthly backups are. On Aug. 3rd, a client needed a file that was *deleted* the day before. Of course, we did daily backups, but we didn't have enough spare tapes.
f. All users initially had the same password for their email accounts.
g. I still have to e-mail the network admin about patches, etc. for AutoCAD and other design programs we use.
I think I would like to go on, but you get the picture. Oh By the way: the hard disk on a guy's laptop crashed last week, he hadn't backed up his data, and now I have to help him 'set up' his computer tomorrow morning. Sigh!

Yeah, right. The bulk of people wanted better livelihood and wages. Technology was just the next logical step. The previous govt. ignored the first two needs and focused on the third instead.
Tell me, is the present US Govt. curroption-free? If so, why the issue about the nexus between conglomerates and the administration? How are the efforts to suppress information / profile people/, etc. NOT a anarchy?
Yes, people will get what they want. So be happy and get drunk.

Yes, you're a troll. Your stupid country which doesn't even have running water in many places DEFINITELY didn't get electronic voting right (or at all), so shut the fuck up.
I have stopped posting on this site (almost) because I see nothing but a bunch of ignorant, arrogant zealots on this site who are biased against ANYTHING that is non-North America/Europe.
---> I am in the US, btw.
Actually at my workplace we use a website that has the picture, name and address (es) of the owner (s), value of the property, floorplan of the house for MOST of the houses in some cities.
Appraise something with the power of vision..
"'It took Adam Arkin and David Schaffer just $200,000 and a grad student to develop a potential treatment for AIDS. And that scares them.'"
So the grad student did all the donkey work, and doesnt even get named?
(jokes apart, thats good work by the researchers)
Not to be trollish, but..
for all the India-talk on/. of late, I'm surprised nobody mentioned anything about the all-electronic voting for the general elections in India. ( still 2 more phases to go out of 5 phases!).
We seem to have got it right w.r.t voting machines.
And YES, voting day is a holiday in India, and the average turnout has been high ( 50% plus) in most parts, despite the summer heat. Temp. nearing 100 deg. F ( mid- 30 deg. C for the rest of the world)
India is still a third world country. beggars line the street, people are still massively poor (outside of those with tech jobs), the infrastructure sucks, and tourists are routinely kidnapped. What, did you think that all of India was suddenly like San Diego?
Have you been another victim of the biased WASP media, too?
Do you know that the media in the West still ikes to project India the way it was in 1947? (when the Brits thought they had too much of looting and raping of that nation?)
I agree that we have a long way to go. But bear in mind that
"beggars on streets" exist in the US, too.
"tourists are routinely kidnapped"-->tourists are routinely harassed, looked upon with suspicion, and taken for a ride in the US, and Europe, too.
"infrastructure sucks"
Its in no better/ worse shape than that in the US.
The obvious question is: "do I have a way to back up my claims?"
Well... look outside on the streets, my friend: you will find it all.
Ah, but who do they call for tech. support?
Is there a 4th world "country" that they can source tech. support to?
That was totally uncalled for. And stop living in the past. There is no way India can be called Third World, and a large number of Indian companies call US for tech support.
That makes the US a fourth world country then??

I have installed Ad aware, spybot S&D and ZA on my parents' computer, and asked him several times NOT to use IE. Guess what? he still uses IE/Outlook express.
Then every week I have to remind him NOT to open attachment x or stay away from application y. And, of course, listen to him complain that his computer has become very slow.
No use complaining: I chose to use Win 98 because I thought that was all he would need, now I'll have to wait till the next vacation (s) till I go back and install Linux. Let him complain for a few days, after all, once he can go back to doing he was doing before (sans the spyware/virus problem) why should it matter what OS he uses?
