  1. Bitcoin getting too hard to mine? Let's just make up yet another new one! People buying into this stuff have about a 50/50 chance of losing it all... good luck with that. I don't have enough disposable cash to risk it.

  2. Why now? on Microsoft Brings DirectX 12 To Windows 7 (anandtech.com) · · Score: 0

Kind of silly to finally add support now when we're nearing the end of life for Win 7.

  3. ch-ch-ch-ch-changes... on Trump Endorses Permanent Daylight Savings Time (thehill.com) · · Score: 0

As long as it stops changing... I always thought it was stupid in the first place.

  4. of course... on A Third Person May Have Been Cured of HIV (newscientist.com) · · Score: 0

Of course it's possible to cure HIV... just ask Magic Johnson.

  5. "The eight character password is dead."... yes, because the average hacker has a $10,000 rig just to hack individual Windows passwords. That's a silly statement at this point in time. Beyond all that, being an admin and developer at my company I can tell you that the vast majority of people use more than the minimum amount of characters anyway. At any rate, raw password hacking accounts for about 1% of compromises these days... we really need to focus more effort in other areas as well as education of end-users in a manner that they will pay attention to.

  6. Admittedly I found this moving too. I love seeing how video games touch the lives of so many people and in so many ways these days. I've been around since the beginning and video games have been a part of my life since the days of Pac-Man and Space Invaders. I've become what I am today in many ways because of them including a career that has helped to provide for my family and put a roof over head and food in our mouths. MS scored some points with me when I saw this... and I loved seeing how enthusiastic that little boy was about games in general too!

  7. They can't HANDLE the TRUTH! on 2018 Was the 'Worst Year Ever' For Smartphone Shipments (cnbc.com) · · Score: 1

The fact that everybody and their brother already has at least one phone that functions perfectly fine is the biggest reason why. The fact that they added some silly "feature" to an app, or a new emoji, or whatever doesn't do much for the average person. The world is over-saturated with phones! The technology in them for the past few generations has been perfectly adequate to do what 98% of people use them for too - browse websites, post to social media, text... and make the occasional phone call. We all knew this day would come... quit trying to blame trade with China and all kinds of other factors why sales are dropping. People are not as stupid sheep-like as you manufacturers seem to think they are!

  8. I'm just wondering at what point do they crash and burn. Their model has become outdated and as customer for MANY years I've gotten to the point that I try not to to go there any more when I days past I was loyal to the point that I purposely tried to keep my business there. The changes to their reward system are terrible (and after YEARS of accumulating points they are no longer worth squat), I get tired of them trying to strong-arm me into buying used games when I want knew ones (to the point that I've could employees lying to me about availability) and ThinkGeek is an overpriced joke with retail stores literally charging more than online... and I can only use my rewards points for "gift cards" good in their RETAIL stores (used to be online too) which basically nullifies the points you just wasted. I feel like I earned nothing after spending thousands of dollars over the years while paying for a membership with them to do so. Oh yeah... they've accidentally cancelled my Game Informer subscription TWICE in the past two years (I had to call both times to get fixed and no one could tell me what happened - it was a "glitch" I was told both times... NOT an acceptable answer). I've been playing video games for about 38 years. I am a collector and will always have a love for them and I believe will be playing until I physically can't any more. This company has lost a long time customer and I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way. I am not surprised that their stock has dropped one bit and in their current state they are all but doomed. They are looking like the next Block Buster if you ask me.

  9. disturbing? on Meet the Man Behind a Third of What's On Wikipedia (cbsnews.com) · · Score: 1

  10. What a bunch of snowflakes. If that's abusive then I shutter to think what they would've thought about how my generation's parents treated us growing up.

  11. No GUI in the 80's on 'I Stopped Using a Computer Mouse For a Week and It Was Amazing' (vice.com) · · Score: 1

If he wanted to understand how people used a computer before the commonality of mice then he needs to also do away with a GUI. In the time period he references computers were command line driven - text on a screen. There literally was no need for a pointer and an analog way to navigate as there is now. That said, I personally have relied on keyboard shortcuts for many things over the years as it's much quicker for more of the mundane tasks I perform each day. I come from the 80's period from which the author references so maybe that just kind of made more sense to me as I've progressed through the years to the present as a computer programmer. From the perspective of a young person that has never seen anything other than a graphical interface I do not know how intuitive keyboard shortcuts may seem.
