I'll agree with what most people are saying. Downloading a movie might be nice, but not all of us have the hardware to visualize it properly. Sure, there's people out there for whom sound and picture quality do not matter, but they should all be shot.

Yep. A good portion of the CDs I own are continuous and you get the full experience listening to them straight-up. MP3s are nice, but I only use it for encoding tracks that exist on their own...

Also, MP3 is notorious for a flat low end. I keep my CDs for when it's time to bring the noise.

I know this is waaaay offtopic, so moderate it to hell if you all feel like it, but I hate it when people like you go around thinking you're so high and mighty just because you're some sort of engineering or scientific major, and you act like it's a travesty that you have so much work. It's your fault. You picked your damn major, ya know. Then you all go off and make assumptions that people of other majors are slackers, etc...

I'll admit I detest the Marley shirt wearing/ecotopia wanting/save the planet people as much as you do, but they're in all majors, not just the social sciences.

Honestly, I'd love to see what you think of my majors (motion pictures/fine art photography). I bet you think we all dress in black, sit on our asses on friday nights and go through DVDs by the dozen, sip lattes, etc...

I'd say it is a regional difference. I've noticed in places out in the sticks, pot is huge, along with the other 'hippie' class drugs (Looking at the four walls and lava lamps would get boring after awhile...break out the bong!). Whilist you get to where i live (miami fl) and harder/different drug use is up...i.e. coke as a harder drug, e as a different drug, since these drugs lend themselves to the more 'urban' culture.

Prosperity sure :). I have no problems whatsoever with prosperity, I'm honestly the most greedy person you would meet. Happiness? Maybe to Ma and Pa Kettle in Peoria, Ill. But look what the likes of Disney have done to locales like Times Square? It used to be a whole lotta fun down there. Now it's all corporate Disnified 'family-safe' fun. People would go to NYC and Times for the edginess, the sleaze...now it's rapidly becoming Disney-North. Sure, there's elsewhere to go, and these corporations can't possibly do that sort of thing everywhere, but you have to feel bad for those who were affected by it (i.e. the small business owners displaced by the Disney Store, etc..)

Basically, I think Katz is just scared that AOL-TW (there, I made an acronym) is going to homogenize entertainment for the bulk of the population. He may be blind as to other options (DSL for net access, DirecTV, Echostar, over-the-air NTSC, HDTV for TV viewing) but you all can't blame him for being a little scared.

Bravo, Mr. Case for your recent merger, I wish you the best of luck. But I think it's our duty as Slashdotters aware of other options to let the masses realize that they have a choice still in their entertainment/net access options.

Again, AOL-TW may be big, but there is so much more out there...ex. there's thousands of independent record labels from the kid with the DAT deck down the street to operations like Boxed (www.cluboxed.co.uk check it out!)...We just have to keep a careful eye on the new company to make sure they don't get too out of control.
