I find ASL so useful that I've taught it to my friends for communication in loud bars, silent communication in meetings, secret messages we wish to pass in a room full of people, etc.

In terms of full fledged speakers, since you are not looking for a permanent solution, I'd recommend just using a OSX notebook. Open up the terminal, and type 'say hello world' You get the hang of it really quickly. On the windows side, Read Please is quite competent, and has a 30 day free trial period. I'm as pro-green as they come, but because of my understanding of science, not because someone said that the sky is falling. When I hear people say that global warming is a FACT that cannot and should not be challenged via the Scientific Method, I get pretty frightened. All challenges to any theory make it more accurate. Intelligent Design is not a theory because it cannot be challenged. Global Warming IS a theory, and a pretty good one, but it's SIGNIFICANTLY weakened by the morons who follow it blindly, and refuse to let others analyze it critically! There are a lot of fair minded, rational people with science backgrounds who believe that taking actions to reduce carbon emissions is a good thing for the planet, who don't want to throw out the scientific method. We're willing to work towards a better understanding of climate change through science, and in places where the current theory doesn't quite fit, we're very happy to say "yes -- the science here is inconclusive." It doesn't mean the whole theory is wrong. It doesn't mean that we should not reduce carbon emissions. It doesn't mean that our cause is not just. We're not afraid of people attacking the theory of global warming. Quite the opposite, when holes are found it means that MORE study should be done. I have a terrible feeling this is going to be misunderstood, but I'll throw one more paragraph on here. I completely support the idea of SIGNIFICANTLY reducing the use of fossil fuels. In my personal life I try to be as green as possible. I take public transportation everywhere, I've started/improved recycling programs everywhere I've worked. I truly believe that we can take action to improve the suitability of the earth for humanity. I just don't want the lies of "scientific consensus" and "the time for debate has passed" to put a chill on the GREATEST accomplishment of mankind -- the scientific method. Most phones in people's hands right now aren't 3G. Most of the United States, where the iPhone will be released later this month doesn't have 3G service. Jobs has already said in front of hundreds of people that the 3G version will be next.

With the way phone purchase work, especially for something like the IPhone, the (usual) 2 year commitment, means you're stuck. And for $600 you should get something that is cutting edge. If the Iphone were $200 and did not have 3G, I'd think -- well, alot of phones don't have 3G yet. But the Iphone is the only phone that costs more than $200 that doesn't have 3G. Regarding the next version that WILL have 3G -- I completely agree with you about waiting. I don't think anyone should buy the IPhone v1, because v2 is so much better and only 6 months away. People who buy an IPhone in June will definitely regret it. Buying an IPhone now is like buying a regular DVD player. With HD-DVD and Blueray around the corner -- why would buy a regular DVD player?

Please provide documentation that shows that iPhone ringtones must be purchased from iTunes. The phone's not out, so you have no idea what it requires.

Wow! I cannot imagine that Apple, the creators of ITMS would possible let you use your own mp3s for ring tones without having to pay for it. Either you'll pay for special software to allow you to use an mp3 as a ring tone (which is what the Treo does) or you'll have to buy the ringtones from ITMS, or MAYBE they'll let you use a song you bought through ITMS as a ringtone. In 2004 the ringtone market was worth $3.5 Billion. I don't see Apple giving that away for free. Apple is creating the IPhone to make money -- and I certainly don't blame them for that -- but they are going to monetize EVERYTHING they can. You are correct however that the phone is not out yet, so it's ALL speculation. Thinking the IPhone is good or bad is all speculation -- the cellphone side of it could completely suck, or it could really be the revolutionary device that we're all hoping for. I'll tell you what though -- I'll contact you through artefaqs (love the name btw) when the phone is out, or you can post at fishdan and we'll see who is a better predictor of Apples intentions.

I must completely disagree here. The platform is mostly irrelevant

I humbly point out my own blog entry on why, as a former Palm software engineer, I switched to the Cingular 8525 (the most modern HTC phone that's currently out), and definitely did NOT want the IPhone.

Call me a hater, but it's all about functionality. Every interface is cumbersome when you are first exposed to it. Do the apple guys do it better than the windows guys? Sure. But honestly, I've been able to figure out how to do everything on the 8525 pretty easily -- including uploading music from my mac book pro.

The #1 thing is 3G. you'd be crazy to buy a phone now that doesn't have 3G. You say IPhone v2 will have it? That's going to kill sales of IPhone v1 -- and then there won't BE a v2.

But what I really want is functionality. Find someone who has a 3G phone, and try using google maps for mobile with a super highspeed connection. It's like being Jack Bauer with less killing. Likewise, It's a REQUIREMENT for my phone (and music player) that I be able to swap files EASILY, and add/remove music (and other files) from ANY computer.

SSH over 3G is pretty damn good. I've run vi, but I have to admit, I switched to using ed for complicated editing. And that's because I don't go for these new fangled editors. Plus, there's no easily accessible esc on the 8525 keyboard :(

Finally -- I wanted to sync my address book and calendar from my device with my gmail account. Both WM5 and Google are open APIs! So I'm writing it (which means it will suck, but still). Apple does not to seem to want you to be able to do that.

Also, if I want to make an mp3 into my ringtones, the 8525 says "go right ahead!" On the Iphone, you have to buy ringtones from ITMS.

So for me it's all about functionality -- or what you call "features." As crazy as it sounds, the Windows Mobile Platform is MUCH more open than the IPhone. Is that CRAZY? Yes. I don't know how that could have happened, and if Apple changes there position, and opens the API to anyone who wants to give it a shot, then I'll be happy to take a look at it. But until then, when I think of the IPhone I think NO CARRIER.

When I worked at Palm we worked HARD to court independent developers, who cranked out great apps for the Palm platform. The good ones made money for themselves and really enhanced the Palm. Palm screwed up alot of other things, but you compare the wide variety of apps that are out there for the Palm OS devices, and anything you want has been written. Apple needs that kind of dev work behind it, or the best interface in the world will make the IPhone the next Edsel.

The illegality (if there was any) was in the claim that US Attorneys were asked to break the law, and then fired for not doing so. If there is a WHIFF of illegality, especially in the election process, government should welcome the scrutiny. I'd rather hear Rove and others say "I cannot find the emails, but I will do all in my power to help others recover them."

If there was, as Mr. Iglesias claims, an attempt to coerce him into breaking the law, and it's now coming to light because of his firing, it's worthy of investigation. I do wish he had stood up and counted when it was more relevant and easier to prove, and the fact that he didn't makes me REALLY doubt his story. And in the absence of proof, I believe Gonzales should be completely exonerated. But rather than stonewalling, welcome the investigation. If a (former) US Attorney says that he was approached to be part of a conspiracy to commit a crime, that should be enough to get a search warrant (because conspiracy to commit a felony is also a felony). I take it all with a grain of salt -- this is a disgruntled ex-employee who was fired -- to me the allegation is still serious enough to warrant (pun intended) further investigation

    from the article:

We went through the 500, and what we found were this massive plan to deny the right to vote -- I mean, extraordinarily targeting African American soldiers sent overseas. They'd send them a letter to their home address. The letter would come back. They say, "Gee, they don't live there. They shouldn't be allowed to vote."

This rings false to me -- the military supports the republicans in a MUCH higher percentage than the average citizen. I doubt very much that there was a master plan to stop soldiers from voting by the party who would benefit from them the most. Two words: Colin Powell. Also, I doubt very much that soldiers are incapable of answering snail mail or fulfilling their duties by taking care of business, and doing what they need to do to legally vote while stationed overseas.

Secondly, I have no problems with anyone challenging the residency of voter -- honestly, I'd like a little MORE confirmation of who is voting (but not how). We've heard the "voting from the grave" stories, and other crazy things -- and there is no doubt in my mind that both parties would do ANYTHING to win -- and I really mean anything. If one of the thing that reduces voter fraud is the checks and balance of one side making sure the other is honest -- fine. Did the republicans only challenge likely democrats? Well DUH! They're not going to challenge people who are likely to vote for them. Same thing for EITHER party. I don't see this as indications of fraud either.

Third -- I also disagree with the analysis of Mr. Iglesias. The fact that Tom Cruise played him in a movie is so incredibly irrelevant that I can't believe it was mentioned. He was the US Attorney!!! He should have set up a sting operation the MINUTE he suspected there was a conspiracy to commit voter fraud! Edmund Burke said all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. Here was a man, whose job was to uphold the Constitution, and he sat on his ASS when presented with a major conspiracy against the public? Assuming his words are true, his inactions show him to unqualified to hold his office, and although IANAL I believe his inaction as a member of the bar when presented with impending crime is actually criminal himself. Lawyers are sworn to uphold the law (please don't snicker). A lawyer is an officer of the court. Perhaps a lawyer could comment on that? Here is a man who we were COUNTING on to uphold the rule of LAW. If what he was said was true he was essentially called up and told "we are planning evil against your constituents." Inexcusable

Finally -- I DO believe that these firings were improper. I know I've criticized the article, but thats because I believe CRITICAL REVIEW MAKES THINGS BETTER. I actually want to see justice here BUT NOT FOR PARTISAN REASONS!!! I just happen to love Justice. And what we need is for more people who love Justice to fight against the people on both sides of the aisle who don't.

I also believe that it's complete bullshit that the emails do not exist ANYWHERE. But enough chit-chat about it -- let's get some search warrants and go find them! Make the people who committed this sabotage of our government pay, because they are more of a threat to us than any terrorist. Government should WELCOME this kind of scrutiny, not try to prevent auditing! I know it doesn't, and I know I'm living a pipe dream. I just keep thinking that someday we'll start voting for people who will actually serve with honor.
