  2. ISP care? on More On Detecting NAT Gateways · · Score: 3, Insightful

ISPs sell you connectivity, what right do they have to tell you what you can't do with it? Does your electric company tell you what you can and can't plug in and how many things you can power? Now, if i run extention cord around the neighborhood and charge people for it, then there might be a problem.

On internet: For all I'm concerned, I have *ONE* computer connected to my DSL, and other computers connected to the one computer. ISP gonna tell me I can't connect computers to each other? What's next? It'd be illegal to have multiple screen/keyboard/mouse on the ONE computer? (i think this can be done...buddyPC??)

The 'client' computers access resources on the 'gateway', which happens to include the external internet filtered through the firewall. I dont have multiple computers connected directly to the internet, that's just insecure.

And besides, what are they losing anyway from NATs? It's the same connection/bandwidth. 150kbs down on one box is the same as 150 split to 75kbs down on 2 computers. It's still only one IP. Whatever activity (and any responsibility) that goes on is on ONE account.

Nowadays it's a 'magic box' that 1/2 the people don't know how to use correctly and see it as a toy.

Not as many people buy CD's.

Could it be that music pumped out today isn't worth as much years ago. I thing before my time people were much bigger fans of KISS, U2, Eagles, The Who and the like more than the teenie-booper followers of today's music listeners. How about the fact that pop music (which seems to be the biggest trend nowadays) is played so much on the radio that by the time they stop getting airtime people dont want to hear it anymore, thus not purchasing the CD.

IMO, new music today isn't made because of "the music", but more of appeasing people in suits (think american idol, et al). So good sounding music isn't as important as dance routine and sex appeal. How anyone can appreciate those while listing to audio is beyond me.

Want a laptop with AMD Mobile XP, NVIDIA GeForce 4 420, 1280x1024 LCD, 40GB HD, 512 MB RAM, DVD-CDRW, *AND* 1.44 Floppy these days you'd be limited to a few select models. And when the classic iMac came out, LS-120 was still prevelant (remember those? superfloppy drive that took BOTH 120MB superdisks and 1.44 floppies).
