  1. Re:A chilling effect on sales? on RIAA Sues More Music Lovers · · Score: 1

The idea is probably to sue for enough to cover the defendant's RIAA "boycott" for a few years. This way, even if the RIAA is only left with $1000 of the settlement money after paying the lawyers, it's still enough to pay for about 70 CDs (retail price). I guess it's probably cheaper to just buy the CDs (unless you never get caught, that is).

Wow. I think you may have hit the nail on the head, depending on which week of the cycle we're talking about. But you wanna know my secret? Three words (apologies to Nike in advance): Just Do It. I don't need to understand her urge to play musical chairs with the...well....chairs any more than I need to understand why you think a Camry is "cute" (though the 193K miles does melt my icy heart somewhat). I just do it. I do what she says. At least in this situation. Ok, in most situations. Because it's not a matter understanding why, but of understanding that I cannot understand. But hey, if you're thinking it's some kind of one-way street, think again. She will return the favor when my Day comes. And just what "unreasonable" thing might I be whining for on that day? Well, I would explain, but I don't think you'd understand ;)

Why does a printer need a carrying handle? How often do you move a printer?

Believe me, make it easy to move, and women will move it. Functionality? Bah! There will come a day--and only females know which day that will be--when it has simply been in the same spot too long and must be moved immediately. Look at furniture, for instance. I don't know what great, catastrophic, disaster we are being saved from, but for some reason when a woman has the revelation that "the day" has come, it's an emergency. And it is. Because if you don't help her realize the destiny of every piece of furniture in the house--and I don't care if she wants you to move the dining table so the kids have to crawl under it to get to their seats--she's going to have a splitting headache that will last until you do.

The solution I have used for our lame IE-only-Javascript time reporting system is CodeWeavers Crossover Office. I'd say download the trial version and give it a go. I installed IE6 on Linux using it just recently, and it worked like a charm (slightly slower than the real thing, but good enough to get my hours in). My oldie-but-good-enough Office 97 works with Crossover as well. It's not free, but it's easy. If you need a 100% free solution, you might try the latest build of Wine (since that's what Crossover is built on), but difficulty of installation will vary.

With this court victory, how long before they go after even the free tools? I say very soon. Grab DVD Shrink while you can. BTW, I love DVD Shrink. The latest version will burn on its own if you have Nero installed, so you don't even have to switch apps. The drag-and-drop reauthoring lets you cut out DVD extras so you can often fit just the movie on a 4.7GB DVD*R without recompression (but it has adjustable recompression built in, too). However, I don't believe the author is adding any new features--just bugfixes. (Wait, aren't "features" and "bugs" interchangeable words? Maybe there's hope yet! ;-) )

I wish it were that simple. My experience on LA freeways at busy times has always been that whenever you try to put space between yourself and the guy in front of you, someone zooms in to fill it up, so that you end up "tailgating" again. Yes, I suppose if you have the time you could allow this to continue to slow you down until you eventually get to where you're going, but if you are short on time, then you have a stressful situation again, especially if the people behind you are pissed at you for slowing them down. So which safety do you want, the collision type or the road-rage type? It's stressful either way you look at it.

At home, you should have every right to filter out anonymous emails, just the way you would block anonymous phone calls. And if you feel like hearing opinions and solicitations from any Joe out there, well then, go ahead and open up the door. The idea is having real control over what communications you receive, especially when you're footing the ISP bill. Anyone who wants to force you to hear what they're saying is automatically an annoyance.

Hate is an ugly word--don't be too quick to assume it's hate or some kind of insult. Try looking at it as concern for a moment. Things like "Learning superseded by transparent interface to smart computer" in 2025 sound cool, but doesn't it sound scary as well? Don't we have enough evidence in history that free thought is a good thing for society? Would you want to be programmed like a computer? How long before the remote "upgrade" includes some "behavior control" code? The thought is somewhat deeper than adolescents and teens typically want to go as far as worrying about their adult lives (Hey, I'm just saying this from experience--we were all there once). But I wouldn't advise reading into predictions like this as hate right off the bat; I say try to keep an open mind; that's something the young are largely admired for. And not all adults were put on Earth to tell you what to do. Some just want to give you food for thought--you may be the ones to protect us old geezers when things start to get out of hand.
