    Hiring or training people that can write better assembler than a modern compiler is very very difficult.

    Ooh! Ooh! Can you give me a link to this fabulous optimising compiler then? Because gcc ain't it!

    BTW it must support the proprietary instruction set architecture that our chip supplier invented.

    Maybe not. PC games don't work (due to faulty "copy protection" technologies), and all people do is buy console games instead, because they work.

    DVD Movies have region coding in them, so people buy the working (region-free) DVD players instead.

    When the USA switches off analog TV in a couple of years, you might get a protest though.

    More importantly there are 70,000 or so EU laws, a whole bunch of other treaties, and a lot of the important ones (about human rights etc.) would probably not pass a referendum in the state.

    Oh and there's the Monroe doctrine as well...

    Well, that Donald Knuth guy still hasn't finished writing his book "The Art of Computer Programming" so he's got a way to go before getting the "gets side-tracked" award :-)

    And IIRC John Harrison (the Chronometer guy) wrote multi-page paragraphs, so some georgian and victorian writers can get fairly lengthy :-)

    Um, it's a book that starts with a commentary on the C language (which seems fairly accurate!) and goes into linguistics and other interesting areas with actual graphs and numbers to back it up.

    Not to mention if you are watching a program on late night TV, and then the ad break comes on which is twice as loud as the content, potentially waking up the neighbours and getting you evicted from your house because of that **** crazy frog, you might want to get a mute button!

    Don't forget housing! If you are on the dole, the authoritities pay your rent, which can make a huge difference (you would lose a lot of money by taking up a job, if your flat is habitable and the job is not well-paid).

    To counter this, the UK parliament has decided to outlaw political protests (gatherings of one or more people) from within 1km of the UK parliament buildings/govt offices/downing street etc. That's almost Bushian. They'd never get away with that in Freedom^h^h^h^h^hance.

    Well, if everyone was as security conscious and tech laden as that, cybercafes would not exist. Yet I think there are still several around the world.

    I'm happy to have been burned very lightly (it didn't cost me anything apart from my time and a few international phone calls) and have since read cryptonomicon. But I could still do with some better security habits I admit.

    I am (now) aware that is the sign out link. I think it should be called "sign out" (or log out) instead of "click here", since it is/was confusing (the incident was some years ago, just after cookies were invented). It was a moot point though since the machine crashed before I could do that (also just after dodgy internet explorer versions were invented).
