It was used on me once. I checked my amazon account (recommendations I think) at a cybercafe once, and two weeks later that machine one-click-ordered a dozen explicit lyric rap cds for me. (Would it hurt amazon to put a "sign out" button on their website?)

I had never enabled one-click ordering but Bezos had thoughtfully done that automatically. I immediately tried to cancel when amazon sent the confirming email but to no avail. So yeah, its just a mechanism for pissing you off.

The games industry (in US/UK/Aus anyway) is indeed casual.

I imagine that if you apply to a games company (apart from maybe EA canada), the first thing engineering (as opposed to HR) would say would be "wow, that's the first female who's ever applied for a programming position" and give you an automatic interview. That was my experience anyway (the female in question was no longer at the address on the CV though, so that interview never took place).

I have heard rumours about female games programmers (e.g. seen their names in comment blocks in conversion projects) but not had sufficient experience with them (i.e. actually met any) to say whether modification would help or hinder your path. Perhaps you could ask his female colleagues?

Not at all! The old system was completely rubbish! A small picture of the country that always had a couple of suns and a couple of clouds planted over it at odd places no-where useful.

The new system shows the areas where rain is expected.

It would be greatly improved by better use of colour though, instead of making the entire country beige. Perhaps they were complaining about how PAL and NTSC have lower resolution in chroma than luma, but the relief can still be done in luma so I think it could be made to look better. Just make the sunny bits more yellow!

In the UK already a large proportion (over 10 percent) of black males and a significant proportion of other males have had their DNA taken by the police in the last couple of years (mouth swabs) and put on file. Conviction is not required, since the courts ruled that taking DNA is not an invasion of privacy. So I wouldn't count on those safeguards.

Well when they change patent infringement to be a criminal offense like copyright infringement, programming will be de facto outlawed (and using computer software). The only reason software is still allowed in the USA is poor enforcement - a huge amount of it is bound to be infringing some patent or other. If they chuck people into jail for that, americans can get back to being subsistance farmers (as long as they don't plant any seeds that have not been paid for to the owners of their patented genes).
