  1. Re:Worst Nightmare is on its way on Spy Fly · · Score: 1

The most effective way of keeping everyone under surveillance is to use communist China's technique of enlisting volunteers to spy on their neighbors. Unfortunately, this has the side-effect of destroying civility in society, because neighbors are always suspect and nobody trusts anyone except their immediate family. Fortunately we live in a free country and this could never happen here... Right? =P > This is one of the most frightening developments > I've ever seen. The only thing that might hold > it in check is an underground movement of > people developing technological counter- > measures.

  2. Re:It's a broken business model on Research: File Traders And Music Purchasing · · Score: 1

Interesting point--I never connected that two, but in fact, cars and cds are the two products that I always buy used. (Except for the occasional gotta-have-it-now CD.) In both cases I know that if I buy new, I'm getting ripped off because the means of distribution is rigged against me.

  3. Edison report exposes industry's Achilles' heel on Research: File Traders And Music Purchasing · · Score: 1

The report notes that people are more sympathetic to the artists than the labels and Edison VP Charneski recommends that the labels get "their artists" out to explain that downloading is taking money from the artists' pockets. But in fact, the labels generally have an adversarial relationship with "their" artists these days. And after doing their best to rob them everyway possible, there really isn't anything left in most artists' pockets for downloaders to take anyway. If the labels really cared about the artists, they would stop using their thug tactics and ruinous contracts. The fact is, except for the case of a few top-name artists, downloading doesn't hurt the artists at all. Downloading, in fact, is good for most artists, because it gives them better exposure. It only hurts the labels--and not just because of lost revenues. By taking distribution and marketing out of their hands, it makes them irrelevant. Yes sirreee, that's the real reason the industry is wringing its hands and moaning about this whole internet thing. They are in the same position the pond ice industry was in when refrigeration was invented. That's not such a bad thing...

  4. Thinking in Java, 3rd Edition on Best Websites for Developers? · · Score: 3, Informative

Bruce Eckel's Thinking in Java, now in it's third edition, is in my opinion the best book for learning Java. Thorough, thoughtful and thought-provoking: Available online free at www.bruceeckel.com.

  6. Re:about:mozilla on Easter Eggs in Web Sites? · · Score: 1

Oh, I don't know about it being a bug. It looks like they hooked into the Mozilla "about:" code and used it for a quick way to test out HTML rendering, probably for testing/debugging purposes. That would make it not really an Easter egg, just some exposed debugging code.

  7. Re:Might be old, but Brian Eno on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 1

I second the recommendation of Eno for early electronica. I'd recommend in addition "The Essential Fripp and Eno", a good collection of ambient sorta stuff, and his collaboration with David Byrne, "My life in the bush of Ghosts."

  8. Re:about:mozilla on Easter Eggs in Web Sites? · · Score: 1

In IE 6.0, about:text renders text as html in the browser. For example try "about:bite me bill".

  9. Beating RIAA spoofing on Overpeer Spewing Bogus Files on P2P Networks · · Score: 1

The key to beating RIAA and the major labels' spoofing the p2p networks is vigilance. I know when I download something, I check it out & make an immediate judgement whether it something that should occupy space on my harddisk. After all, if it's a piece of crap I pay the same price that someone who tries to download it does when I cue up what I'm hoping is nice set for a long coding session. Damn I get pissed when that RHCP tune ends mid chorus. Listen up & dump it if it's crap! Best regards & mind the puddin' dudes! =P

  10. Re:3rd world countries. on Isn't it Time for Metric Time? · · Score: 1

The Second World, in the past referred to the Soviet Union, PRC and their satellites. Unaligned, undeveloped or developing countries were the Third World.

With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the First, Second and Third world designations don't make sense anymore, since the political dimension is gone.

Sometimes people talk about the North and the South now. US, Europe, Russia, China on the one hand, Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia on the other. Australia and NZ, despite geography, belong to the North.

  11. Re:Other IBMers existed too on IBM Kernel Hackers Respond · · Score: 1

AS/400 is an alternate universe. I worked with a couple of IBM AS/400 developers who were tasked with porting some code I wrote to AS/400 and talking to them was a totally alien experience. The superficial terminology stuff, DASD etc., was just a matter of translation. But beyond that, wow... Of course they were totally appalled that in my universe you could simply walk off a cliff or accidentally lock yourself out of your house, etc. AS/400 allows no accidents.

  12. A PC box is the worst place for audio of any kind on AOpen Debuts The Funniest Motherboard Ever · · Score: 1

It's kinda cool that they're making such a strong pro-tube statement, but really: What a lame-ass idea! Regardless of which side of the argument you fall on, whether tubes are the way to go or not, it doesn't make any sense to have *any* analog audio sources inside an inherently em-noisy box. If you want high fidelity, (or you just wanna be able to crank it), you've gotta have digital output and perform the digital-to-analog conversion outside the box. That's what the pros and serious amateurs do. Forget stinkin' soundblatters! Digital io cards and standalone a-d-a converters are the only serious way to go. What you do with the sound after conversion to analog is up to you. I'm personally kinda fond of the sound of tube amps but that's besides the point. I don't want a couple inside my pc given the heat that those tubes generate. The last place I need more heat is inside my pc!

  13. Don't fix what ain't broken on Alternatives to the CBDTPA? · · Score: 1

There is nothing wrong with letting business float or sink on the sea of Capitalism. If they need government help to keep them from floundering they aren't worth saving. Think about the all the ice harvesting and transporting businesses that went under when refrigeration was invented. The only important point is that music will live on with or without the parasitic recording industry.

  14. Re:Evolution and Creationism are compatible on Apple Deals with Devil, Communists · · Score: 1

This is, in fact, what most mainstream Christian sects, including the Catholic church believe--that evolution is the hand of God. It's only the nuttier fanatics that believe that the Bible is both infallible and literally true. Unfortunately, they are loudmouths who take over school boards etc. BTW, I don't think the article is a hoax. He seems to be a Christian of the unctuously sincere but ignorant type.
