Yes, it is a great concept - the creators intend the pieces to be like playing cards, able to handle any number of games. The two most popular games for the pieces are Icehouse (my personal favorite) and Zendo, which is a much more accessible game, very popular on game night. For Icehouse, you really want pieces of the right proportions (though I do know guys who have really nice homemade pieces, so they don't have to be the ones you buy) but I'm sure Zendo could easily be adopted to pieces of other shapes and sizes.

I haven't tried Homeworlds, but will check it out.

I have played Go Moku (that's the spelling I'm familiar with, but I'm sure there's more than one way to spell it), and while it shares board and pieces with Go, that's about where the similarities end. Go Moku is much closer related to Tic-Tac-Toe than to Go in terms of how it's played and its objective (not in origin).

For those that aren't familiar with it, Go Moku is a game played on a Go board, with the objective of getting 5 stones (pieces) in a row. Pente is a variant of Go Moku.

The best way to simplify Go (IMO, of course) into easier to digest bits is to play it on a smaller board. The standard board size is 19x19, but the game also commonly played are 13x13 and 9x9. Much of the strategy of the game only happens on the larger board sizes, smaller boards emphasize tactics more, which is easier for beginners to grasp.

I am very glad that you've posted about Go. It's a beautiful game and more people in the western world should know about it.

That said, I've never understood why so many Go players treat Go and Chess as an either/or, one vs the other type of choice. I play both Go and chess, and while I can easily see that there remain much greater challenges in computerized Go playing programs than in Chess (For those who don't know, the best Go playing programs play at roughly the level of an intermediate amateur human player), this fact does not take away from the fact that chess is still an interesting game, both to play and, I'm sure, to develop better computer opponents for. Nor does the work being done on chess take anything away from Go development.

While I'm here, I may as well post a Go wiki link in a wiki that's all about Go. I realize you (parent poster) probably know about it, but just in case anyone is interested in learning more about Go, I figure it's a nice starting point.

  18. Re:What problem? on Auto Manufacturers Running Out Of Unique IDs · · Score: 1

It's not quite that simple. A good number of the positions are pre-determined to indicate manufacturer, country of origin, production year, etc. Also, the letters I, O and Q are not used, for the sake of clarity.

All in all, I believe the last 8 digits are the ones that are changed without predetermined meaning - and of those, the last 4 are always numeric.

I'm not about to do the math to figure out how many numbers are available, but am interested enough to appreciate it if someone else cares to figure it out and post it.

Hmm, just thought of something, since manufacturer and model year are part of the VIN, this would seem to indicate that manufacturers are producing too many cars per year (for the VIN system) - though I believe there's some overlap - IIRC, only one digit is used for model year, so I guess eventually the same numbers gets re-used for the year digit.

Yes, the site is down. Yes, it's ironic that this should happen to a site hosting information about a service that's being claimed as a solution to the slashdot effect.

But I don't think that it really is an indicator. I happen to have read the site yesterday after reading the Petabox article, so I think I have some of the basic concepts down. As I understand it, the idea works with cooperation from ISPs (and others) to provide more localized caches of large popular files. The motivation for the ISPs is that by providing the cache, they save on their upstream bandwidth and the associated costs.

So, while it's funny that we've slashdotted the archive.org server where the Freecache website is, Freecache itself is not dependant upon archive.org's bandwidth.

It's also worth noting that the concept is still in beta and pretty new - I don't think they've got a lot of ISPs on board yet. From what I can tell, it seems a very good concept - the only thing I can think of that I would want to make sure of if I were an ISP is that my cache is only available to users on my network (the whole saving on bandwidth usage argument falls apart if you suddenly become a cache for users on other ISPs) but I would think that would be pretty easy to do.

For those who haven't yet been able to read about it, here's Google's cache of the front page.

And it won't depend on users correctly using the compound URL. More sites will get the benefit of the freecache.org service."

I believe that is the idea - not for users to prepend URLs, but for the owners/webmasters of sites with large, popular files to prepend the URL in their links, or implement redirects to freecache when they get slashdotted, or otherwise hit hard all of a sudden.
