I hate efficient, inexpensive, fast x86 hardware that I can buy anywhere in the world at a fraction of the price of PPC hardware. It justs so annoying to have all of this commodity hardware so readily available everywhere I turn... so damn annoying.
You miss the point entirely. This is designed to hide your location. AIM is not designed to do that. This is like saying, "Register the gun to 5000 people so when someone commits a crime with it they can't be tracked down."
And you know as well as I do that 90% or more of the people who elect to install this software will do so for illegal reasons.
I'm all about privacy on line and initially, this sounded like a good idea to me. But then I thought about the religious terrorists of the world. You know, the ones who fly planes into buildings and blow up abortion clinics... kill children in schools in Russia, etc.
Fanatical religious terrorists of all kinds (Christian, Muslim, Jewish... but mostly Muslims) will take advantage of technology like this and I don't think I want to assist them in carry out their evil deeds against the normal people of the world.
...I don't have a clue how you can tell which one is optimum...
Assign numeric values to categories like this:
Sex [1-5]
Personality [1-5]
Education [1-5]
Financial [1-5]
Sum all of the chicks up and let the model decide who you should mate with for the rest of your life. You could and should get much more detailed than this (I can think of a ton of sub categories to add to "Sex"... hair color, eye color, body shape, breast size, finger nails, etc. but you get the picture).
Ever heard of technology??? I remember the theory about the world running out of food too... that never happened either... because of a little thing called technology. You know, more productive, more efficient, etc. Besides all of this, there's enough coal in Virginia to cover the next several hundred years of energy requirments for the East coast.
Open, well-documented formats will allow governments and businesses to access documents/info many years from now. It's unfortunate that most IT managers don't realize how closed formats will hinder them in the future.
The whole idea of computer and network security in today's world is fundamentally flawed. Everyone on Slashdot knows that the Internet was not designed to be secure. It was designed to collaborate, share data and to share computing resources.
One cannot turn something into something it was never designed to be. One can only bend and twist the system so far... and the Internet, with all of its on-line commerece and banking, has been bent and twisted to the breaking point. Perhaps a total redesign is in order?
Also, I take issue with all of the "Computer Security Professionals" who attended some week-long (often less) course on network security trying to convince all of their clients they consult with to use 16 char passwords, encrypted file systems, etc. Most Mom-&-Pop businesses do not need CIA-like computer security. They need patches, AV and basic firewalls, nothing more. And all of this frantic, absurd advice only causes lost productivity as it's far to complex and inconvenient for business.
Mail servers used to forward every bit of mail that came their way. It was considered impolite not to. Today, it's considered SPAM to run an open mail realy. What would we all do if routers stopped forwarding packets? See what I mean? The Internet is broken thanks to all of the new "security" threats that used to be considered normal operating procedure.
"Well, honestly, we want that more than anything, but the doc said that if my wife got pregnant again, she would likely die and lose the baby too."
That's a good one... here's what I tell them: "What business is it of your's? We have one healthy child who is well-taken care of. We do not want more. I had a vasectomy a month after he was born. Why? because unlike my father, I'm responsible in every way. My son will have a chance to get a college education w/o borrowing thousands of dollars. He won't have to fight with brothers and sisters to get money, gifts, emotional attention, quality-time, etc."
Quality Daycare costs $600 a month. Food ain't cheap, nor are clothing, medicene and proper housing. People who don't factor this stuff into the emotional desire to have children are BAD parents who will harm their children in some way (financially, emotionally, etc.)
I knew I wasn't the only admin to switch to Debian after the RHL debacle! Debian has great (automated) updates is very stable and is entirely free. It has everything that RHEL has except the price tag and fake support.
Red Hat killed it when they decided to focus on the "Enterprise". I suppose this is why Sun is upset. IMO, they should be glad that RH is so short-sighted. Doing away with RHL will be recorded by history as the most foolish move that Red Hat made during its brief lifetime.
Xandros & Linspire would not exist were it not for the demise of RHL. So, you may say, what do home users have to do with the "Enterprise"? Everything. People like to use what they know. They know Windows from home, so it's natural to use it at work... the same could have been true for RHL.
You are missing something. SCO hasn't said this explicitly, but here's what they are implying:
"SCO owns the concept of Unix. Linux is a successful Unix-like operating system. SCO sales are down. Linux has stolen the Unix concepts that we own. Look how similar each OS is implemented. Let's try to sue someone."
How did they screw-up so many machines? At what point did someone say, "Guys, this isn't working." 12,000, 40,000 or did they actually mess-up 60,000 systems before stopping to ask themselves if they should continue?
Also, what ever happened to TEST BEFORE DEPLOY? Are we to believe that these guys are that stupid?
Most european countries have substantial socialist components to thier governments.
Historically, this is true. The reality today is that these systems are collapsing under their own weight... much like the US social security system will eventually. The moral of this is that individuals are going to have to start looking after themselves one day.
I don't understand all this talk about moving to another country. They're in the same boat as everyone else. Start your own consulting business or switch careers. Take care of yourself, don't rely on a company or government to do it for you... if you do, you'll be sorely disappointed someday.
The vast majority of Americans are some Christian derivative.
Not all of us. I don't believe in any religion. Jesus Christ can go to hell for all I care. He's just a fable. I have nothing against homosexuals and believe that they should have the same legal rights as heterosexual couples. I believe abortion is murder... especailly partial birth where they pull the child out by the feet before killing it. I own handguns and will not give them up. I have a spine and I am decisive... I voted for Bush. There are millions of Americans just like me.
OK Dems... get your spinless, gutless, indecisive butts on an airplane and fly off to Canada, France or some other hippy liberal enclave and play the part of the liberal, enlightened elitist while real Americans (such as me an dubya) kick some Towel Headed Terrorist ass.
Fuck World opinion. W stands for Wup-'em and if the World doesn't like that, who cares. I'm all for W. I'm all for guns. You touchy, feelly hippy liberals can go to France and eat cheese and drink wine and read about how real Americans (like me and W) take care of Towel Headed Terrorists.
You know, the Germans and Japs had an awfully low opinion of America in WWII, good thing we didn't worry too much about what they thought about us.

Merry Christmas... from all the people at Microsoft. Buffer overflows for everyone this year ;)

Distribute it by bittorrent. It's got all of the anti-tampering technology built in.
The sun will burn out one day and this is ice age stuff will be the least of our worries ;)

To bad you can't get a copy for you home computer... there's always Fedora... but that's unsupported.

I only have enough money to buy one game. Which is better: Halo 2 or Half Life 2?
Thanks for the advice!!!
"No software is bulletproof. No software lacks security issues."
What about programs such as Qmail? Written in Python (no buffer overflows PERIOD) and designed from the ground up to be secure.

There are really more important things than terrorists. Such as education, jobs, the economy..
None of these things will exist if the Towel Heads get their way: The destruction of western Civilization by any means

Tribes2. Loki ported it to Linux. It was the best game I ever played. Sad to see it gone.
