Perhaps measuring the amount of people getting certified for hardware platforms, languages, etc. might provide more insight into how many people are pursuing computer science type jobs.
These are not "computer science" jobs. Computer science is applied math, nothing more or less. It does not involve fixing the LAN, installing MS Office, troubleshooting hardware, etc.
CS is about designing algorithms to solve complex problems (such as encryption), writing code that scales up easily and applying mathematical models to everyday things. CS is software engineering... your idea of it is incorrect. You're confusing the auto mechanic (the IT guy) with the mechanical engineer (the CS guy).
And after that, they'll buy Novell. Then, they'll lay claim to the Linux kernel itself and threaten to shutdown kernel development work with patent suits.
Lawyers will see to it that projects such as Linux (when used in commercial settings) don't infringe on patents. If Linux is found to be infringing, then someone will owe someone else a lot of money. It's really that simple.
Linux is great. Free and Open Source SW is great. But once it gets outside the realm of geeks and into major corps like IBM, HP and Sun... it's a totally different ballgame. Instead of Joe Geek using Linux in his parent's basement... we now have companies such as Merryl Lynch, Diamler Chrysler and Auto Zone using it. The DOD uses it. It's turning into a big-time OS. Now, big-time lawyers will begin focusing on it more and more.
Pretty soon, Linux as we know it won't exist. They'll be another, better, freer OS that only geeks use once again.
When I goto 'Help' -> 'Release Notes' on Thunderbird's text menu bar, IE opens... why is that? This occurs even though I've disabled access to IE in the WinXP 'Set Program Access and Defaults' section.
I can't wait for RMS to start demanding people call it GNU/Solaris.
RMS died of a massive heart attack when he discovered that GNU had been certified Unix... He kept mumbling, "How can 'GNU's not Unix' be 'Unix'," while drool ran down his chin.
Anytime you hear a person dismiss the concerns, ideas, suggestions of others with a simple one-liner such a, "Free Software is good for society," etc. you should know immediately that you're dealing with a "true beliver" who lacks the ability to understand how complex things actually are... someone who is only repeating what he heard someone else say w/o having any real knowledge of the issues.
I see this a lot in investors. 99% of Americans know nothing about investing, yet 99% of them will tell you that diversity is a good thing and that a mortgage is *good* debt and that 401(k)s will help them retire. When in reality, the concept of diversity is used by stock brokers to get more of Other People's Money (OPM) for gambling with in the markets, *no* debt is good debt unless you happen to be the lender and 401(k)s are just one more way for banks and insurance compaines to get more of OPM (their main focus).
So before repeating what you hear, take a deeper look and you may start to see how things really work.
Sesequepedalianism does not, however, imply 'intelligence'.
No more than knowing how to write assemly code does.
I prefer machines and numbers to people and languages. That does not make me any more or less intelligent than someone who uses big words... words that have no meaning to 80% (or more) of the population. If the person who used big words understands this fact, then he/she must be an idiot... why use such big words to communicate when most of the people who hear them attach no meaning to them whatsoever... that is NOT an intelligent thing to do. It's good for the ego of the speaker, but not for communication.

That's not to say that AIDS turned out that way. They *tried* initially to engineer it that way. Google for some of their old researh efforts and you'll see what I'm hinting at. In the end, AIDS proved to be an effective killer that works equally well across all races and genders.
The homosexual angle came about when the US military did testing (in the states) on homosexual males. Who cares about them? Let's see how fast it spreads as they have intercourse, etc. Today, it is a known fact that more women are infected each year in Africa than men.
AIDS began as a heterosexual disease among blacks in Africa and as a homosexual disease in males in the US... that's simply shows the first sets of people who were apart of the initial tests.

Dead serious. Google for and read about the South African Chem/BIO weapons programs that were developed in an attempt to target certain subsets of the human race (Africans). It's common knowledge that they also had an active Nuclear Weapons Program... De Clerk (spelling?) got rid of six or seven nukes.
Also, read about the South African scientists that Washington was "concerned about leaving the country"... scientist that were brought to the US or kept in SA under watch and given cushy university jobs to keep them occupied.
There is no hard evidence of this... it's all circumstantial, but the truth will be known is a few hundred years. AIDS was engineered by SA and the US to kill blacks. Look at the continent today. It was a success.

South Africa gets a "get out of jail free card" from the US. It's a long and nasty story... here it is in a nutshell:
The US military worked with South African scientists to develope a disease that targets and kills blacks. Today, the entire continent of Africa is ravaged by AIDS. Some countries have a 40% infection rate. The virus was a smashing success.

He's very mathematical...probably has asperger's syndrome (high-level autism). These types of people don't have *any* social feelings, or if they do it's very little. It's simply not in their DNA. They don't purposefully intend to piss everyone off, but that's one of the things they do. Nothing personal, it's just how they are.
I have asperger's syndrome. I offend people constantly. I know this, but I can't help it and the fact that they're offended doesn't bother me... not in the least. I've tried to make myself feel bad about my lack of social tact, but I can't.
We use Python to admin Linux, *BSD, Windows and Mac OS X... desktops, laptops and servers. It's the best, most flexible, cross-platform scripting language available... and it's free.
Many notable ideas come from researchers who beforehand knew nothing about "how to go about" things. People from the outside looking in sometimes make dramatic discoveries very quickly as there have no preconcieved notions on "how things should be".

Sure... one is for geek hobbyist and the other is for corporate CIOs... where's the one for the average desktop/home user???
RHL was sold to average desktop/home users through Dell (for a time) and at retailers like Office Max. Today, neither of these two things are happening. RH created a vaccum by EOL'ing RHL... Linspire and other *previously* unheard of, unknowns are filling the void.
If RH hadn't dropped "RHL" in order to "focus on the enterprise", they'd be in a position to make tons of money with hardware partners such as Dell just like Microsoft does!!!I rant about RHL being EOL'ed constantly, but I still can't believe they did it. It will go down as the single most stupid OSS managment decision of all time. RH had mindshare, they had the grassroot Linux movement... hell they were Linux in the USA. They threw all of that out the window.
If a gun owner loads a gun and puts the barrel in his mouth and pulls the trigger, it's not the manufactuers fault.
Why computer users are surprised when they click a link and download malware and subsequently get ads or sign up for email lists and then get spam never ceases to amaze me.
When you put a loaded gun into your mouth and pull the trigger you're probably going to die... don't act surprised and offended if you do. The same is true for software. Don't be surprised and offended... the computer simple did what the user commanded it to do.
Please... no one will buy longhorn for at least 2, perhaps even 3 years AFTER it's been released. Hell, I know lots of people who are still chuging along with Windows 95... the PC desktop is flat, one might even say that it's dead. Sure, it'll be around for a long time, but win32 will be firmly entrenched for a long time too, not this "longhorn" crap... it's all pie in the sky.
Profit = people giving you their money. It doesn't work the other way around.
Sometimes in order to profit, companies have to cut perks, benefits and even salary. It's nothing personal, it's just business. The company is looking out after itself. You should do the same. I drill this into my friends' heads. I've seen to many great guys great fired just to improve the bottom line and those that remained were given less pay and commanded to do more.
Find a company that's still learning the ropes... one that's still kind to its employees and gullible enough to offer perks. But know that every company will wise up sooner or later and stop offering such things... they may even fire you right after giving you a glowing review because you make to much money... the last reason I got.
Play hardball like they do and always be on the lookout for something better. And remember, it's nothing personal, it's just business. Put yourself first.
Microsoft uses much of BSD too... they just don't advertise the fact. TCP/IP stack, ftp, etc.
Also, Apple is not an OSS/Free software company. If anything, they are bigger assholes than MS... especially when it comes to hardware. It's been my experience that one is fucked when one buys Apple hardware and has problems with it.
Apple really is a monopoly when it comes to hardware... want a new G5 with a single processor? Apple won't sell it to you... even though they were selling them 4 months ago. They're famous for making arbitrary and stupid decisions like this. Rumour has it that they're going to stop selling 17" LCDs and offer 20" LCDs as the "entry" level LCD (1,100 bucks)... how stupid and arbitrary is that.
Don't buy their shit. I could go on and on (ibook recall program that they won't honor with me, crappy turn-around time on repairs... 2 weeks, Apple Care Plan that's practically useless, etc.).
This is so true... the same can be said for Python... no buffer overflows there either. It's simply not possible. Qmail (the world's most secure MTA) was written in Python.
Yah, dis is true.
Heh Hans, vatch me as I flex my tight buttocks against my spandex pants and throw da little wimpy girly boys out da vindow.

Hardware that CIO's and Lawyers tend to like.
GNU (GNU's not Unix) has been certified Unix. In other news... Richard Stallman died today of a sudden heart attack.
The conclusion says it all: "It's Not So Simple."

I searched cert.org for this recommendation, but I couldn't find it. Anyone got a URL? I'll believe it when I see it.
