  1. Re:I wish that were true (and a question). on Does C# Measure Up? · · Score: 1

When I write any application, be it a full blown java app, an applet, a JSP class/page, whatever. I assume that it's going to be run under alot of different circumstances. This is why I take full advantage of grabbing any and all system properties to adapt to my working environment. Just like a web programmer has to deal with different browsers, you have to assume that the user of you program may not be using what you had in mind. So you either warn them or adapt to them. This is what I like about java though. It really can be a chameleon, whereas other platform dependent languages tend to be touchy as to if they will work under varying conditions (even WINE cannot handle all Windows apps).

  2. Re:jump off the bandwagon on Does C# Measure Up? · · Score: 1

Um... if you knew anything about java, you would know that it is very easy to program an application to have it handle any platform (did we suddenly forget about System.getProperty("file.separator")???) As for me, yes I have written many applications that run on Mac, Windoze and Linux... all without recompiling and/or changing it for the machine. Have I written for a PDA... everyday... works fine on a Palm, works fine on a cellphone, and it works fine on a handheld scanner... just to name a few. MIDP is looking quite nice these days. And all those people who said that it couldn't handle games can now sit back and see how far J2ME has advanced. Microsoft supporting different platforms... now there's a joke. Thayt support only platforms running THEIR OS..which is how and why they missed the midrange market, as well as the embedded market. Guess that the java people were so clueless that they simply went to where Microsoft was afraid to go (ie: outside of their own OS, just as usual).

You apparently haven't taken the time to work with any of the newer releases of java (1.3 and 1.4). Java is a very mature and worthy language, especially when it comes to developing non platform dependent applications. I prefer java since I CAN program it on a Linux box, transfer it to a windows, mac or even a mainframe and the program will still run exactly the same without changing a single line. lets see c, c++, .Net or c# do that... Also don't forget about a little thing called J2ME which is slowly but surely making it's way onto cell phones and other small devices. You may want to take another look at todays Java before declaring that it sucks.

True, but my point (in general) is that less income to the distributors, artists, and labels = less availability of major releases. So you'll be less likely to see the more risky releases which are not guaranteed to recoup production fees, and we'll be left with the same old cookie cutter releases. Sure, musicians will always exist, but the labels and distributors guarantee that they will be heard.

I believe that this sort of task management solves more problems than a larger task force sent to research and then overresearch a problem. I've seen way too many problems grow into bigger ones mainly since someone was not willing to take the lead to solve the immediate problem now and worry about the landscaping later. Money is never made or saved by talking about it.
