I don't think this guy minds being slashdotted. It's not like it's a mission critical site or anything; a couple hours of downtime isn't really hurting.
It's not as if webservers burst into flames when mentioned on slashdot, you know.
I won't run anything but FreeBSD/OpenBSD on my servers, and I won't run anything but OS X on my desktops. I've never found a task that I couldn't get done elegantly with those operating systems.
I don't think of the Linux people as bleeding edge maniacs, I completely understand their motives for choosing Linux. It's a neat OS, and if I were going to build a pc-based desktop, I might look into it, too.
What it comes down to for me is that BSD works for me. Linux might be equally capable of meeting my server needs, but I've yet to see a compelling reason to switch. If anyone has any good reasons, I'd love to hear them. Is there a Linux version of Apple's "Switch" campaign?:P
I'm in no position to evaluate current Linux distributions as I haven't tinkered with one in a couple years.
Eh, nothing that's going to convince you to start using them.
I still connect to a few to play TradeWars, L.O.R.D., and other goofy console games. They're not fantastic games by today's standards, but I still dig them.
Other than games, I don't know what people connect for. textfiles.com takes care of all my old skool textfile cravings, so there's little need for a bbs in that regard.
Mostly, I think it's just an anachronism. It's nice to fire up a telnet app and get back to your roots.
It's not just that they're made of meat, it's that they're made of tasty meat.
Look, it breaks down like this: things that want to be eaten taste good, things that don't want to be eaten taste bad. Fruit wants you to eat it, so it's nice and yummy. Some plants like juniper don't want to be eaten, so they taste bad.
Cows taste good, therefore, they must want to be eaten. If they didn't, surely they would have evolved foul tasting meat by now. As soon as cows stop tasting good, I'll stop eating them and move on to tasier animals.
Who the hell do you think you are, denying cows their wish to become delicious pastrami sandwiches?
I was vegetarian for about ten years, vegan for about eight of those. I don't think that gives me any sort of position of authority on the issue, I just don't want you thinking that I haven't thought this out.

Man, that's strange.
I just can't believe there's a version of IE 5 for 3.1.
Is it even remotely like IE5/w32 as far as rendering goes?

I get all my advice from slashdot, and that's the best tip I've seen in months!
That command really did a great job compressing the contents of my disks. I kept trying zip/, but nothing happened. My boss is going to be really happy that we don't have to order that new "raid" setup now!
One question, though: is there any way to avoid entering my "password" every time I compress the disks?
I thought 99.99% of their appeal is based on the fact that they aren't Microsoft.
"Sure, Word Perfect blows, but at least it isn't Word."
That sort of thing.
I'm pretty sure Corel is already down the drain, not in the process of going there. Raise your hand if you bought their latest office suite. Anyone? Anyone?
Not compared to run jump slide flip run jump jump jump slide jump fly shoot jump fly shoot jump fly shoot. Feel smile broaden after beating an amazingly cool puzzle.
Super Mario Sunshine rocks your socks when it comes to gameplay.
Works the other way, too. It's entirely pointless to tell slashdot users not to mindlessly bash Microsoft.
I totally agree with you, I just don't understand why you'd bother expressing such a reasonable statement here.

Just out of curiosity, moderators, how is the parent post Informative?
Are you wiser now that someone has anonymously informed you that their local hospital uses a mainframe?
Seriously.
just going for a sort of "stream of consciousness" thing there, eh?
Yeah, there are a few of us.

It's dying.
It seems to be taking it's sweet ass time about it, too.
Darrell Hammond played Sean Connery.
One of the few truly hilarious things he ever did.

Just curious...

What is the point of living in a world of cold grey boxes?
The point is to get some work done. If you're going to espouse the value of form, it's wise to note the value of function as well.
There's more to life than eye candy.
Incidentally, I have a Lian Li brushed aluminum box with a great cooling system, your cold grey box. It's absolutely gorgeous, cold and grey as it is.

I must have missed physiology class that day.
how does it run on FreeBSD. Can we get it in the ports collection?
"known troll"
Quit it with your McCarthyism. Trolls are people too, and sometimes they're funny or insightful.
"Are you now or have you ever been a troll?"
Sheesh!

Because musicmatch is the kind of software that gets tossed onto driver discs to fill up space.
It's totally useless and unrelated, but people see it as a 'feature' anyway.
uhm
Touché, but to me there's a Big Important Difference between free and Free. Restrictions are restrictions, as far as I'm concerned.
You know what, Stuart? I like you. You're not like the other people here in the trailer park...
Remember, GNU/Linux, is protected by the gpl.
So while they technically "gave it away", there are restrictions that shouldn't be ignored.
Strings, they're everywhere.
Not a bad looker, that one.
Nudge, nudge.
