As a both a student (undergrad & master's) and an instructor (technical), I can agree with the some of the points made here, but here is the crux:
As a student, I made the classes I felt necessary and skipped the ones I felt worthless. I was mature enough to understand that if I goofed, my GPA suffered. No problems, however, as I graduated in the top quarter of my class, both under & post graduate. As an instructor, it can be very frustrating if you have students who are actively not participating in the class, but I also understand that if I don't have the material to make the class interesting, there is little I can do to keep their attention. My only concern is whether or not the students who are choosing to pay attention & participate are not affected by these (admittedly few) other students........
As unpopular as it may be, I highly prefer a reasonably silent keyboard. I read the earlier posts extolling the joys of the IBM 'M' keyboard - its heavy feel, high-quality springs,etc... I have used them and wouldn't own one.
I use a Microsoft keyboard and have found it to be the most responsive and well-laid out kb I have ever used....
The issue is not whether or not global warming is occuring or not (temperatures studies should be reasonably reliable - shouldn't they?) but the cause of them - pollution? automotive emissions? bovine methane? And, consequently, what should we ban to stop it?
Stop hoping for the absurd: Government contractor in the healthcare field, using something out of the ordinary (anything other than Windows..) and using something other than a log-in password???? As an former healthcare employee and now a government employee, I can tell you that the security measures you are hoping for do not exist. Bone-stock Compaqs or Dell workstations, running Win98 or Win2K with nothing but log-in passwords (which are specified by the employees, not sysadmins...). The security beyond the physical security (obviously slim and none in this instance) is absurd and virtually nonexistent.
Not at all - I was thinking the same thing. While a high-end PC can be built/set up to do this sort of processing, a high end Mac is already there, waiting to be bought.
As much as I love my PC, I also understand that there are things that I don't intend to do with it, either..
Honesty should not be modded down - it should be modded up... and me without any moderator points right now
Well, I haven't seen many with 5 PCI slots. I have seen a few with 4 plus an AGP slot...
Most mobos with heavily integrated features will offer 5 PCI slots and an AGP slot - some even have 6 PCI slots (these are troublesome, however, because the space requirements of all those slots forces the AGP slot very close to the DIMM slots, which can make it difficult to add/remove/change your RAM without removing the vid card - especially a G4 Ti4600). Again, I said most mobos - Abit, Asus, Gigabyte...
You are right, however, in saying that non-integrated mobos are difficult to find...I have found that the quality of mobos is on the rise (in general) and the integrated features save me PCI slots for additional cards (and other crap I lust after, but would rarely use..).
Why is it only music that is concerned when someone brings up P2P? We could be sharing video clips of our kids' birthday parties, or databases of our favorite holiday recipes....
Athlon XP2800+ with the 333 FSB.... Paper launches and the exceptionally long ramp ups... what is up with that? I sat and waited while 2400+ chips were trickled into the market (and was lucky to snag one)....
nVidia NV30 -- while not quite vaporware, 'officially' releasing it in 12/02, while stating that no one would actually get their hands on one until February 2003 should net at least an honorable mention.
You could work for the government... as an employee of the Fed, I do not get a bonus or gift for the holidays, and I also get to work the 24th and the 26th.
but then I also don't have to worry too much about being laid off, bought out, investigated by the government, stock market going to hell.... I have always found the idea of a Christmas bonus kind of silly -- to expect the company you work give you something for Christmas.. it's a job for crying out loud..
The problem with games like Doom 3 and Unreal Tournament 2003 is the hardware requirements... unbelievably high demands for hardware, which translates to high costs. I want to play Doom 3 when it hits, but if I don't have the hardware to do so, the $50.00 I spend on the game is then exploded by the $350.00 I have to spend on a Radeon 9700Pro to get it to run.
The age-old battle. It is simple: it is so much easier to buy a PS2, hook it up to your living room television, drop in a game: that is it. At this point you are in the game and playing away.
On the flip side, buy a computer (or components to make a PC), spend the afternoon (or day) putting it together, install OS, tweak OS, download drivers/bios updates, install game.... usually at this point there is a crash somewhere (BSOD or GPF), look for a patch to the game, look for the beta drivers that will let you play the game with your hardware.... and on and on and on.
You get the picture. I have to admit to having built a monster PC, but still playing games on my PS2. Sure the hardware on the PC is more suited to playing games, but it just is not worth the hassle of trying to get the games to run. I stated this in a letter to the editor of Maximum PC and got ripped for it.... but it is true.
This is true as well - if you sit inside them, you will see that they are identical inside. the only difference is in the body panels and the options (GL, GLS, etc).
Jettas and Passats are not built on the same platform. The Jetta shares its platform with the Golf, Beetle, Audi TT, several SEATs and several Skodas. The Passat is built on a chassis that is shared with Audi, but not the Jetta. Very few parts are common between the two, except for some minor interior pieces.
BTW, Golfs are built in Germany and sold in the US for about $2000 less than a Jetta built in Mexico, but are the same car (except the trunk)... tell me which one you would buy...
I have been suckered into the whole "buy it now or lose $$$" before... The table saw I bought 'on sale' a year ago is still available at the same price... stood in line for awhile to get in the store, then had to go to work...
I now work the day after Thanksgiving (the fed doesn't sleep) and completely skip the crowds. Online, however, buy early and ignore the hype.
It takes a pirate to spot a pirate?

Now that Microsoft has come out and stated that P2P is too big to stop, it is a fact? Or, better yet, is it because someone like RXC reports on the report? Just because MS (or some employees of) prints a report, we can then say "Yeah, I agree with that". Please.... P2P has been too big to stop for much longer than this. When Napster became the defacto standard in the popular media/lexicon for P2P applications, you knew where it was going.
P2P works because: a)it is easy to do - with broadband and relatively simple applications; b)people, not all of them but a significant number, feel the music industry is a monopoly and overcharges for music; and c)doesn't it just feel good to do something that is probably illegal and know that there is little or no chance of you suffering the consequences?
Personally, I don't like to see stories like this in the media, mainly because the less coverage my favorite P2P application gets, the more likely it is to remain in operation. Luckily, I don't see that app mentioned but just a few times here.
yeah... and had to have a 3rd card to properly run everything... it was sooooo cool!
The 9700 Pro was out first -- I have had one since September (bleeding edge adoption, I know). The non-Pro 9700 was recently released, however....
True, but the original post is about the 9700 Pro, not the 9500 boards...

As the Human Torch would say:No wait, that wasn't the argument, was it?
Damn, I hate these high-level posts.... I just wait for a new story to be posted about a little less controversial....Anything new going on with Microsoft?

If I remember correctly, don't I need a Gummi Bear to fake a fingerprint?.......damn, never one around when I need one...
No, you are not the only one, but I didn't want to be the one to bring it up...
I know, but I had to... at least we could feed a bunch of people with them...
