Except, the parent isn't trying to be funny. The Daily Show is, in some regards, better "news" than the crap that comes on after primetime television.

Their news IS parody of real news, of course, but it's insightful, it's thought-provoking, and they're equal opportunity in their mocking of liberals and conservatives.

  2. Re:PCHDTV HD-3000 on EFF Compiles Endangered Gizmos List · · Score: 3, Informative

One of the biggest problems with HDTV tuners isn't the problem you describe, where you've got great picture, but nothing WORTH watching in hi-def.

The problem is that most people with computer capture cards have to rely on computer-based output to their television. They only place you can watch your HDTV is on your computer monitor. Ok, sure, a lot of people have HDTV televisions, but most don't. Most projectors under $2500 are 800x600 at best, and even the ones that are 1024x768 use DLP chips that have to actually process video at 800 vertical or less.

Long story short, unless you've got a GREAT television, or a >$2,500 projector, you're going to be watching your HDTV content on your computer monitor, or it's going to look a hell of a lot like the rest of the content on your antenna.

Actually, as a long time gambler and part time chip collector...

Most casinos *will* take chips from other casinos if (a) they're part of the same chain, or (b) they're a reputable A-list casino not in debt.

Luxor will take Circus Circus chips because they're both Circus Circus owned casinos.

Binions will take a Station chip because the Station casinos are financially stable.

Those chips are dropped in the box as cash and replaced with chips from THAT establishment.

Elsewhere in this thread they mentioned take-home chips were nearly 100% proffit for the casino. Not so on $1 denominations and roulette and other "marker" chips. The cost of high-grade casino chips from someone like Paulson or Chipco (look at your chips, the ones with top-hats and canes, those are Paulsons -- the slick ones are Chipco) run about $1 each (!) in lots under a thousand, and probably don't drop much under $.50 for quantities in the 10's of thousands. Sure, they're still proffit, but try running out of Binions downtown with a rack of $1's from the Poker Room. Expect to be "asked" to cash out your chips before you leave. [$1 Binions WSOP chips went for >$1 on eBay for most of last year.]

  4. Expectations... on What Do You Charge for Tech Support? · · Score: 1

We've had posts in the past for what people ask for OTHER THAN money for doing tech support. I suggest you stick to barter with your friends and family. Sure, people will say barter has this problem too, but with the exchange of money comes responsibility and even with a bold-faced denial of warranty on your part, you're going to be expected to KEEP fixing things forever.

Make certain you want to be in the business of fixing machines on the side for cash for the rest of your natural life.

If you're foolish enough to do this sort of thing on the side, a fair rule of thumb would be about 2-3x your fulltime hours rate for "basic" work (home router setups, Spybot installs, video card upgrades), and 3-5x your fulltime hourly rate for "complex" work (disaster recovery, custom programming).

By those guidelines a 60k professional could charge $70-100 an hour for basic work while an entry level help-desk techno-geek making 35-40k could charge $40-60 an hour for the same task -- and still keep a striaght face when quoting their rate.
