  1. Homemade Cabinet on Play Classic Video Games In NY, At Home · · Score: 2, Informative

Making your own cabinet at home really isn't all that hard. I set out to do this about a year ago and accomlished the goal rather nicely + cheaply. All together the physical building costs only ran about 200 dollars (wood, paint, bits, blades, brushes, etc). The arcade controls, all purchased from Happ, are entirely authentic. It was nice to know I could purchase the same controls that are used in the arcades today. They have a minimum order of $50, so make sure you order all of your items at once. 2 dozen buttons, 2 ultimate joysticks, marquee holder + 25" screen bezel only ran about 85$. I got some of the items on sale, but they always seem to have a sale running so finding a good deal usually isn't a problem. Getting the dual mechanism coin door wasn't as much fun, but after some hunting i found a used one for 20$ and did a little refurbishing to get rid of the knicks and scratches. I managed to get a 25" TV set on sale for $112, so that was a rather good buy. I wouldn't suggest spending the 700$ for a 25" arcade monitor + harness kit. If you put a half decent machine in you can emulate most of the feature of the arcade monitor. I already had a half-decent machine laying around doing nothing, but i needed something to hook the controls upto the PC with. At first i tried to go cheap and create my own controller via hardwiring the controls to a hacked keyboard controller, but due to size restrictions that didn't go so well. I wasn't too excited about paying $100 for a commercial keyboard controller, so i opted for the iPac controller for $50 built especially for those who want to make their own cabinets. I'm not sure if they sell them anymore, but they can usually be found on ebay. All said and done the final cost was probably about $450 for some more finishing items and a one or two mess-ups for my own "authentic" black 6'2" 25" arcade cabinet. I'd like to eventually get some artwork made up and printed out, but the cost of getting them printed on vinyl is a bit too steep for my tastes. For the serious arcade emulation enthusiast with a bit of pocket change to spare this is a really good alternative than spending $2000-$3000 dollars on a manufactured cabinet. It might not be computer cut, but there is always that wonderful feeling of "yah, not only that, but i built the thing" afterwards. Something to cherish for years to come.

Barrenechea and CA's Linux chief Sam Greenblatt are worried that CA will be tarred with the SCO brush and that CA's considerable Linux ambitions will be damaged by a disaffected, if not hostile, open source community when in reality CA has "nothing to do with SCO's strategy and tactics," they said.

Then it's a good thing that this article was posted on slashdot. I'd highly suggest reading through this one.

I'd say calling the OS community hostile is a pretty good look on things --- considering the fact that it faces extinction. Come on now, why would somebody support the death of their well being.

These seems like a pretty nifty piece of equipment. However, as a serious gamer (attending several LAN-based cash competitions a year, including the most recent CPL), I would not recommend this mouse to anybody other than a casual gamer looking for a new way to play. As I recall I remember seeing one of these in use at a expo and some people were having fun playing a few racing/flying style games. Maybe it could be a fun alternative to a gamepad or joystick, but using it in any other game, namely the First-Person Shooter, would be devastating. It would be hard to imagine trying to play with this mouse with my current settings of a windows sensitivity level of 2 (default is 6) and sensitivity in game as low as possible so that I can achieve maximum accuracy. True, it requires a lot of movement when doing a 180 with a MX700, but aiming accuracy is as good as it gets. This could be a neat little package along with maybe one of those "Multimedia Desktops" you see being sold on TV all of the time. Welcome to the (not so) new age of gaming periphrials.

If they do to theif what they did to deus ex I will be royally pissed. Deus Ex was my all time favorite shooter. The game introduced a very intuitive micro management system to the FPS genre and became one of the first and best FPS/RPG's of all time. Deus Ex 2 was a real dissapointment. Many of the problems were due to the dual xbox/pc development (many of the defaults for the game were optimised for console play, etc ..), but the game didn't live upto the original. Keep an eye out on where they go with this, thief fans.

The last I heard funds are being tied up all over the place in the Dep't of Homeland Security. What makes them think they can, on a whim, create an organisation that would affect the security of systems nationwide? We need patches 0-second from the release of exploits at the rate things are going these days. Even though the government wouldn't be the one controling the release of anything, wouldn't involving them and especially the DoHS put a big slowdown on the process? It seems many system admin's patch only when they hear about it on the news. I wonder how long the gov't would wait before acknowledging that something is infact a problem - unless of course somebody releases a Terrorist.B virus?

  16. Boxed in on Time Warner to Charge Extra for Over-Quota Bandwidth · · Score: 1

I have many complaints about this, but my largest would be that of the monopoly they have created. In my area Time Warner is the _only_ cable provider, in which you either have basic or digital cable (which I recieve a letter in the mail every other week about). They are also the _only_ broadband provider. If these bandwith restrictions are enacted and I have to pay more for my connection - I might as well go back to dialup, considering there is no use in having broadband if you cant use any of the bandwith that you pay for. Oh wait .. I forgot, AOL is just about the only dialup isp - and sadly, probably the best around here. Looks like Time Warner owns all of my forms of entertainment and ecuation. How about we toss away our TV's and Computers and all go back to shortwave!
