  1. Electronic Music F.A.Q. and some recommendations on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 1
Here is an excellent section on "techno" music from hyperreal. Very cool, albeit a little dated. Also (if you're interested), check out some of the stuff on raves from that same document, it's pretty interesting.

    Some of my faves:

    Infected Mushroom
    Paul Oakenfold
    Yahel
    Dj Irene
    Dj Tiesto
    Space Cat
    Felix Da Housecat
    GMS
    Master of Rave
    and lots more i'm forgetting...

Oh, get these songs too (just do it dammit):

Dj Red - Enter the Dragon
Dj Irene - Blood is Pumpin'
Playboi - Whistle While You Squirt

Yeah. Hope you have lots of bass, cuz it all sort of sucks without =\

  2. How is the Battery Life? on The Nokia 7650 Cell Phone w/ Integrated Camera · · Score: 1
I'm sorry if this has been covered, but how is the battery life on these things?

I'd imagine browsing the images on the phone's display would really hinder the cellphone's available battery power.

  3. Get ready to overdose on sequels... on Review: Men In Black II · · Score: 1
It has also lost some of the originality. What happened to new movies with original screenplays?"

Hollywood is obsessed with sequels right now because they generally make more than the originals do. On the go right now (to name but a few): Ocean's Twelve (good lord), Meet the Fockers, a Fast and the Furious sequel, another American Pie, Indiana Jones, X-Men, etc etc etc...

The assgoblins in Hollywood don't care if there's logic for a sequel, they just want all of us to take it up the tailpipe a couple more times so they can screw us outta a few more bucks (and some of my faith in humanity).

Hopefully they'll get over this damn trend soon.

    Cuz... we're fans?

  5. Re:It's the frickin emmy awards! Who cares? on Buffy Staked Again By Emmys · · Score: 1
What next, are we going to get in a unroar when the grammy's come out too? There are things worth getting worked up about and things (like say award shows) that I could not give a crap ass about.

Right you are. What people deem "worth getting worked up about," however, is up to each individual person. Not you.

If I were the executive producer of a television show, and there was a committee of people who recognize excellence in television, I would find it insulting that my show isn't even given the opportunity to compete.

The fans are going to love the show regardless of the awards it wins or doesn't win. Joss and Co. (at the very least) deserve to be given a chance instead of being insulted.

  6. "For those of you just joining us..." on Buffy Staked Again By Emmys · · Score: 3, Insightful
"...everyone here is a crazy person."

The reason that this is news is not because we're all big fanboys and think Buffy should win an award -- that is not up to us -- the reason this is news is because the musical episode of Buffy, Once More, With Feeling, was not even available as an option on the ballot. How are they supposed to get a fair chance if voters have to go to extra measures to support it? If this happened to your precious X-Files, everyone would be singing a completely different tune. Whether you are a fan of the show or not is not the issue at stake (see me pun).

Maybe everyone should try reading the entire story before automatically dismissing it as an outcry from pouting fanboys. (But oh yes, there will be those too)

  7. This is getting ridiculous. on The Wayback Machine, Friend or Foe? · · Score: 1
What particularly interests me is the fact that the Machine is a relatively new animal, yet it contains snapshots from my sites dating back to 1998. I can't help but wonder: where did they get such old copies of my websites, and who gave them permission to make those copies?

I'm sorry, this seems ignorant to me.

You can't just put information on the internet and only have people using it the way you want. Once information is on the internet, available to the general public, it's no longer your concern what is done with it. Saying it's wrong to archive something you've found on the web is almost exactly the same as the RIAA saying you can't convert a CD to mp3 for archival purposes... Heck, it's even worse because we're supposedly talking about *FREE* information here (I'm assuming the Wayback machine doesn't try to crack through protection in order to archive private data, but correct me if I'm wrong).

It's your own responsibility (and it always has been) to make copyright information available alongside the documents being accessed, that way this data will be archived along with the rest.

If you want to put something on the web, you have to deal with the pros and cons. You can't have it one way without the other.

And also a refreshing change from hearing about the unseen moral ramifications of Spider-Man vs. Attack of the Clones, and the post-post-Columbine post-9/11 aftershock that you regularly seem to think plagues all movies.

Way to go Katz, you finally cut it down to nuts and bolts, and wrote a half-decent review without sounding like a pompous ass.

    Now just keep it up.

  10. Re:Terms, Terms, Terms on Valenti's "Boston Strangler" Testimony · · Score: 1

    * 'Piracy' -- Copyright infringement is called just that, 'copyright infringement. ' I suggest you stop someone when they use the word 'piracy' and ask them what boats on what ocean they are talking about. "Piracy" has no legal meaning and it only exists because 'copyright infringement' doesn't sound as bad. It's hard to argue with this fact.

It's not just that the term piracy sounds bad, people know (or can figure out pretty easily) what copyright infringement is, and they may not care. By popularizing a new term, you're introducing a "fear of the unknown." Ooh, what is it? We don't know, better be afraid of it! Sounds sad, but we all know that it's natural human reaction to fear or hate what we aren't familiar with... just consider racism.

Post-Script: It's my understanding (and correct me if I'm wrong) that the term "marijuana" was popularized to aid the passing of the infamous "Marijuana Tax Act." Up until that point, it had been called "cannibus," or "hemp."

    Just shows to go 'ya.

  12. Don't feel sorry for them. on How To Profit From Telemarketing · · Score: 1
I've been browsing through this thread and I've come across a few comments that I object to. First of all, there are a couple instances of people arguing that "telemarketers are just doing their jobs."

Well, guess what? Rejection and dealing with rude customers is part of that job. If you want to be ignorant to telemarketers, feel free. It comes with the territory.

Next, I've read a couple posts suggesting we should be sympathetic due to the poor, unfortunate telemarketer's working conditions. A few months ago, I had an interview at a company called "DirecTel." They offered me a job, I accepted. The pay rate was $10/hr. No prior experience was necessary, and I got free dental (wooha!). I took the week of training, which consisted mostly of teaching me how to manipulate customers, how to place people into well defined 2-dimensional categories, and also how to ignore that constant moral nagging due to the fact that I was getting paid to annoy people. Anyways, I quit the job before I ever had to make a call, and paid my rent with the money I made during that first week of training. I ended up costing them money, which made me feel good about myself, even though DirecTel probably didn't give the slightest shit.

Most of my time during that week of training was spent taking people OFF the telemarketing lists while no one was watching, but one time, our slimy little supervisor/trainer guy took us out of the training room, and upstairs to see the place where all the magic happens. People were wearing expensive clothes, laughing with each other, standing and talking and genuinally seeming to enjoy themselves.

Certainly this is probably not the situation at all telemarketing companies, but I can say that the only part of the job that seemed especially UNAPPEALING to me was the fact that I had to annoy people to make a living.

Last thing (I promise)... the aforementioned slimy little supervisor/trainer person once told me that we were offering legitimate products to legitimate consumers, and that we shouldn't feel bad about our jobs as salespeople. The difference between a telemarketer and "Joe Smallbusiness" who owns a store in the local mall is that telemarketers make targets on (potentially) unwilling consumers. They're not out shopping, they're not looking through catalogues, they're in their homes.

At home... not at the marketplace.
