Heh, by your frothy, rabid responses, I see I've hit a sensitive spot. And by your juvenile self-quotes and constant presence on Slashdot, I really believe you are a manager. I'd suggest you get to work and do something useful, but, by definition, that's outside your area of competence. I'm sure the people you "manage" are just as impressed by you as I am.:)
It's like all the preview hype and raves about Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness. When the reviewers got the finished version, they panned it. Thankfully, Tomb Raider once again has a winner with Legend.
But the is a very good reason they are managers, they are good at business. One thing they will have no trouble understanding is the underhand marketing tactics of an abusive monopoly.
Your experience with management is far different than mine. The reason people in my department are managers is because they weren't good software engineers. Generally they realized it and jumped at a line management position when one became available. Thanks to these folks who were "promoted" out of the way, all of our intra-department software is now required to be MS Windows software. It's sad to have the second-raters in charge, but the rest of us don't want to be in management.
When a company tries to screw me once, I figure they will probably try it again. It's why I no longer use Turbotax or Windows. It's self-protection, not hatred.
The best way to explain this would be to ask how many burgers McDonald's would sell in other countries if they all had to be made in the US and delivered overseas.
As long as they're made of beef, McDonalds isn't going to sell many burgers in India, regardless of where they're made.
And this isn't about recouping costs of production, but recouping marketing costs. I am fairly certain there will be a high correlation between marketing costs and demand and, thus, increased prices for heavily marketed songs.
So the more money a recording company chooses to spend promoting a song, the more the public should be willing to pay for it? That's better than a cost-plus defense contract.
if they make bad music, they get little monney; if theu are good, then they will get a lot.
Popular music is not necessarily "good" music, and "good" music doesn't necessarily become popular. Popular music is whatever the recording companies choose to push on the public.
Should a normal user really have to change BIOS settings? It should already by optimised by whoever built the machine.
The default for a Compaq (no jeers) is to boot from the HD before the CD/DVD drive. That doesn't work if you're trying to install an OS from disc or boot from a rescue disc. The only way to change it is through the BIOS setup. So I guess it depends on your definition of "normal user".
Because SCO paid a big name law firm tens of millions of dollars in advance to represent them to the bitter end. SCO is betting everything on this lawsuit.
Let's hope the end truly is bitter. I'll bet those big name lawyers lose a little more interest in the case every day they aren't being paid. They'll be doing the minimum required to avoid being sued themselves.

Do tell. In a timely entry, IEEE Spectrum Magazine has a couple of quotes from Archibald Putt (whom you're too young to remember):
and Looks to me like he's correct. But the is a very good reason they are managers, they are good at business. One thing they will have no trouble understanding is the underhand marketing tactics of an abusive monopoly.

What is the current thinking on which is the preferred style?
Trying to start a holy war?
There has to be atleast some? Stab the opponent with a racket after losing? No?
Well, it may not be violence, but if you're using a racket, you're already cheating. :)
The EO-1 satellite was launched on the cheap in 2000 with a one-year mission. It is still working.

Just move to Europe? Oh sure, we're real popular over there.
My auto insurance premium had a significant decrease at 35. Of course my health insurance premiums increased, but there are always tradeoffs.
To be considered a mature adult you should be able to beat a 2yr old at their own game.
The fun of being a mature adult is allowing the two-year-old to win.

That's only true in the Northern hemisphere.
You mean the southern hemisphere rotates in the other direction? Man, stepping across the equator must be a killer.

Ewww. I think that fits the definition of cruel and unusual punishment.
I'd say don't give them any ideas, but I'm sure their lawyers have already sent the proposed legislation to a few cooperative members of Congress.
And here's one for you.

You have to be a clever guy to know assembly inside-and-out for a specific architecture and not even be in the college of science or engineering.
At the time, most programming was done in assembler, and many programmers were from non-engineering backgrounds.
What I don't understand is why conservatives support this guy.
A lot of true conservatives don't support that guy. The question is really why do so many Democrats support him?
Same thing with airline pilots (aka glorified bus drivers)..
When it comes to landing time, I want the best glorified bus driver there is in the cockpit.
Because Ballmer wants a bigger office, and they need another vault for their money?
