  1. Real-world Experience on MIT Introductory EE Goes Hands-On · · Score: 1

At the university I attend, all of the engineering programs require 24 months (6 terms * 4 months) of co-operative work to get a degree. Since this system has been in place for a long time, we actually get good employers looking for students, as well. We also have a large practical component to our labs, but I think getting out and actually working adds to this even more.

On another note, why do "famous professors" matter so much? Honestly, I don't care how known my professor is so long as they know what they're doing and are good at teaching. I'd much rather have my school pay half as much on professors and put that money to equipment and other program improvements. Unless of course the famous professors work for cheap because they love doing it so much :)

  2. Here's an interesting one... on Are Rebates Scandalous? · · Score: 1

Surprisingly, the one company I've gotten a rebate from was... Microsoft! Yeah, I sent in the rebate for a joystick, sure enough it came back a few weeks later.

I've sent in a couple of others too, but never heard back. Never really cared to track them down either.

  3. Re:How long could an Xboxen version take? on Carmack On Doom III And The Evolution Of Graphics · · Score: 1

I've read Carmack quoted somewhere as saying that the game can be made to perform 50% faster for any specific platform than it would if it were just ported without being optimized.

And I agree with you, I think the problem is with OpenGL vs. Direct3D.

  4. Here's an idea... on Warcraft III Expansion · · Score: 2, Interesting

Why doesn't Blizzard stop releasing "expansion packs" a short time after a game's release and start actually making with the goods initially. Consider this scenario:

Blizzard releases a great game in the initial release. Maybe a couple of patches to deal with unit balances and stuff, but there shouldn't be any major flaws that need fixing. Then (and here's the tricky part), they actually get to work on the sequel right away! Who ever thought they could improve on all aspects of the game instead of just adding to the original? :)

Seriously, why would I want to pay basically the price of the original game over again for an expansion pack that generally adds little to things like graphics and the game's core functionality? Especially in games like Warcraft, where you're guaranteed a wealth of custom scenarios created by other players, great to keep interest in a game. If the company put the manpower into getting the next chapter in the game underway, they could avoid making us wait years and years for the next game in the series.

But of course this means they can't bank on everyone paying twice for the game + expansion pack. Since everybody buys them off the shelves the instant they get put there, nothing's gonna change.

On a note related specifically to War3, I was surprised at how little had really changed from War2 except for the graphics. Sure, they integrated the neat control features from Starcraft like easier unit grouping and such, and added heroes, but I don't think it justifies the amount of time the game's been in development. Blizzard is in the great position of being able to release any garbage they want and have it break sales records.

  5. Re:Uhhhh.... on WINE: A New Place for KLEZ to Play? · · Score: 1

Perhaps a more accurate comparison would be to a multi-boot windows machine... Since that kind of machine can uninstall the infected OS and reinstall it.

Oh, and if you've just uninstalled something that you use, how is it that your computer is still fully functional?

  6. OK, so we've got some extra scenes... on LOTR Director's Cut Reviewed · · Score: 4, Interesting

...but what about those scenes that are in the movie that aren't true to the book? Personally, I'd rather see the extra length offset a bit by cutting some of the things that are untrue to the book. Like all the Aragorn-Arwen stuff and the things that weren't supposed to be revealed until later. I mean, this edition is meant to appease those that wanted more from the books in the movie, right?

  9. It's good to see stories like this on Viruses: More Hype than Danger? · · Score: 1

I think it's a good sign that a story like this gets printed, instead of the usual stories intended to make computer users panic.

I mean, a good percentage of the spam mail I get is "beware of xxx virus, it's gonna do bad things to you", etc. Well, instead of spreading around that spam, users should make sure they are up to date. Don't use Outlook Express, get the latest security fixes for the Internet programs you use, and use a virus scanner.

Thankfully, the mail server I use (a university mail server) keeps an eye on what the current trends are and blocks out common viri. I know that some other ISPs do this as well. Hopefully, email viri will soon be a thing of the past. My grandparents need all the help they can get resisting the opening of attachments...

If the condition of low earth orbit is what caused the lack of an interception system, I would certainly care about its condition. I think the idea is that something should be done about it now rather than when the nukes start flying back and forth.

  11. I tend to think it isn't real on Q&A With Vivendi Rep About Bnetd · · Score: 1

Specifically the answers to two questions... the first about the possibility of buying BNetD or FSGS. I don't see why a rep would say they might have considered it, because I just don't see how they would have... The only thing wrong with Battle.Net's service is that there are too many damn users, I don't think that BNetD or FSGS are any faster because of any other reason. The second was about hiring of an alleged cracker... I thought the answer was doing two things. First, admitting that their software was exploitable, something that companies usually don't do. Second, making it seem like they were below the law, since they tried to make a deal with the guy instead of pursuing any action against him for cracking the War3 Beta. I don't know, it just seems like this isn't the kind of statement Vivendi/Blizzard would want out in the public. But, in any case, it doesn't really bring any new points to the case itself, so I don't think we really have much to worry about if it isn't real.
