I'd say a new standard every 10 years is a pretty reasonably upgrade cycle compared to most other PC technologies...

OK, so yes we can probably live with PCI for longer (possibly much longer), but why not introduce a new standard with better potential? It maintains complete backwards compatability with regular PCI components, so manufacturers of harware don't even have to change anything. Of course another issue is motherboard cost, but there will always be new features put into successive motherboard generations that aren't in widespread use yet... like serial ATA, gigabit ethernet, etc. And there will probably be motherboards available for a lower cost without those features as well.

Plus, what happens if someone is using a PC at work or school or a netcafe to run filesharing software? Should the owner of the computer be responsible, or the person using it at the time? I should think it would be the latter, in which case this method is flawed again.

Also, this time they have not really alienated any developers, because they are still using the same kind of format, just in a smaller size. Of course it means you can't play DVDs in it, but if Nintendo wanted to, they could presumably release an add-on to go on the bottom that would do this.

As for piracy, that remains to be seen. Presumably less people can burn the little discs than regular sized ones.

The competition between these could really spark major innovations, as they each want a crack at the big movies. A film could even give a portion to each company and see how they do with it and base their decision on that.

  23. Re:What they also need... on Microsoft Plans An Overhaul For Patch System · · Score: 1

This isn't exactly what I mean... This just runs the same update executables after the installation is effectively finished, and is what I currently do. However, it would be much easier to have the updater go into the installation share and just replace the dlls, exes, etc. and update the catalog, so that the installation occurs with all the updates without having to replace a whole lot of files that you just installed anyway.

There is actually a way to do this, but it involves manually going in and replacing the affected system files, and making some other weird changes to make sure the catalog files get put in. It's certainly not worth the effort.

Now, with a service pack, it's easy... just run the installer with a different switch, and the files in the installation share are updated.

The big problem with doing it as it is done now is just that it takes a (relatively) long time to update everything. Going through the ~20 hotfixes for XP right now adds about 50% to the total installation time, an annoyance that could be made unnecessary.

On a bit less related note, MS has also committed to providing hotfixes that do not require a reboot, which is of course targeted at the server market more than desktops, but will also remove the need for knowing what switch to use.

  24. Re:What's the point of a benchmark? on More on Futuremark and nVidia · · Score: 1

The real problem is that it's not really an optimization... it's just upping the frame rate at the expense of image quality. This is where benchmarking software differs from games... NVidia knows that people don't interact with benchmarks, so they cut corners on the image quality for a higher number at the end. If you did that with a real game, it's no benefit, because with the higher framerate you get image defects.

  25. What they also need... on Microsoft Plans An Overhaul For Patch System · · Score: 4, Insightful

Not only do they need to standardize the patch installers more, they also need to put into patches the ability to slipstream them with new installations, like you can do with a service pack. The number of critical updates we have to install after every new installation of XP is ridiculous when they could just provide us with an easy method of integrating the changes into the source files.
