Heh, I remember the Care Bears. I always wondered why Beastly didn't whip out an uzi and just cut those fucking bears apart. And they worry about the influence of violent media on children today? If it had any effect, we'd all be dead, because I came up with that shit from watching nothing worst than the A-Team and GI-Joe...

Mom, I can see up this Britney's skirt!
Henry Taylor Thomas, you get out of the TV projection area right this minute or you won't get to watch anymore MTV!
Which is why schools, students, teachers, and libraries can get Microsoft products free or cheap - they wouldn't make much money directly by selling to these institutions/people, but they make a lot of money indirectly when the people become skilled in their software.
Ouch. I do hope you're keeping your resume updated. I can tell you where your company is heading.
Where I work the ratio for the IT dept is 1 manager: 6 supervisors: 2 to 4 developers/admins per supervisor
It's awesome. I only have to report to one person and I spend only a fraction of my time (maybe 10%) in meetings, and they are always relevant and productive. Plus my supervisor trusts my judgement, asks me questions, promotes me, and sticks up for me.
Sounds like you are being overmanaged and micromanaged - two of the biggest killers of productivity out there.
I want to see somebody trying to play Doom 3 on a console with their low resolution & crappy texture.
Wow, you just hit on the reason I have found myself playing more console games. I can honestly say I have spent more time in windows fuxxing with drivers to get some cool new game working than I did playing some of those games.
Consoles are plug and play. I have never had any problems with a console (except for the PSX - I had an early production run that got really hot).
When I was younger I used to enjoy tinkering with my computer. I still do (current project: rolling out a homemade router using free pc hardware from work and Linux) but if I want to play a game, I want to play a game.
Btw, Doom 3 is coming out for XBOX - just like Morrowind did.
Consoles are getting all of the peripherals that pcs are getting. Consoles have modems (DSL and ordinary), hard-drives, mice, keyboards, usb connections, etc - I expect to see webcams at the rate we're going. Once the consoles get the controls to support pc-like games, why buy an expensive video card and sound card for buggy games that almost always require patches?
Hell, I expect that after awhile, PCs and consoles and television will all consolidate into one device (think "giant computer with multiple interfaces - viewscreen w/ voice activation, portable tablet, gamepad, etc"). This is the kind of thing that consumers want. Hell, I want it (though I won't get it with DRM, unfortunately).
Why do you think microsoft is fucking around with the XBOX and tablet pcs and even DRM? It all ties into this eventuality... (wow, I sound like a conspiracy nut with a lovely tinfoil hat, huh?)
The thing to remember - a console is a computer. It's a dedicated device, but it is not very different than your x86 (ie/ xbox).
I dont ever need to use two PIM client (outlook clone) that has identical functionality but with two different set of configuration files and stores my information differently.
Oops. I forgot to comment on this. I agree with you here - we need a standard format (open good, standard better). Different apps, same storage format. Ain't gonna happen but it would be nice.
What makes you think that twice as many developers on one app will make that app come out twice as fast or twice as good?
And what if all the developers work on one app and it sucks? The net result is we will be even further behind Outlook. If we have two or more projects in development at least if one sucks, others will come out on top.
We have that much over Microsoft - if they fuck up, they're fucked. Look at.NET - they are putting *everything* behind it - if they drop the ball with it, it isn't going to work. If we fuck up (*cough cough* united linux *cough*) at least we have other distros/apps/forks/etc to fall back on.

If anyone says to RTFA, they can eat my ass! >:] I like choice. I don't like being overwhelmed.
In any case, profiling is just too complicated to work all that well. There are going to be tons of false positives falling out of this AND it won't matter anyway. So what if the system fingers someone as a potential threat - you still can't lawfully detain them based on information provided by such a system.
There are plenty of crazy militant types itching to rip the system - how do you sift through to find the "credible" threats? You need a full psychofuckinglogical profile to even start to figure that one out.
And what about the closet psychopaths? The ones that just go off all of the sudden - maybe there was a buildup, but that doesn't mean they've been having clandestine meetings with the PLO or something, right? With a system like this in place, people will become complacent and we'll overlook the obvious signs (ie/ that twitchy, sweating guy with the laptop full of electronics jamming equipment and plastique might just make it through because he's lived and worked in Houston his whole life without a single brush in with the law and because the former guitarist from Rage Against the Machine was on the same flight).
Why don't they just sedate us and put us in little pods for the flight. Less of my rights would be violated that way and at least that would be more effective.
I was gonna post the google cache and make a lame joke, but fuck it, that's just not funny.
:)
In any case, it is very cool too see a google cache link in the article brief - let's see more of that!
I just saw the last shred of journalistic integrity go down the fucking drain here! XBox mod chip to play PS2 games my ass!
Why not just let the trolls post stories about free RAM with links to goatse.cx?
Slashdot Reader: Oh wow, free ram OH MY GOD THAT IS SO SICK MY EYES MY EYES THEY BURN ARrrrrr....
Damn it.

Welcome to the Slashkids Fun-Filled Fallacy Post!
Slashkids:Yay!
Today we're going to learn about The Post Hoc (Ergo Propter Hoc) Fallacy!
Slashkids:What's that?
Well kids, that's Latin for "after this therefore because of this."
For example, you could easily say that eating breakfast causes car accidents, because most people that have had a car accident had breakfast that day.
Slashkids:Ha ha ha!
Or that you started a new job, and then your hair fell out.
Slashkids:Then what caused the hair loss?
Who knows? It could be something in the water, it could be any number of other factors. How do we avoid this type of thinking?
Slashkids:With control group studies, double-blind and random tests!
That's right!
Remember Slashkids, sequential patterns != causation AND correlation != causation!
Next lesson: The ad hoc hypothesis
Slashkids:Yay!

On any other website, this would be moderated solely as funny.
Only on a geek site would a story about a Ferengi playing actor getting tail get an informative moderation point.
Moderator: Farengi actors get action. How informative. No wonder my awesome Picard baldcap and captain uniform haven't been attracting any hotties...

Heheh, just like the HDTV commercials on tv.
Look at the resolution and colour - it's incredible!
Nothing personal, but that joke was officially dead the second I used it, which was at least four weeks ago.
Christ, everyone is joking about redundancy - this must be the 37th joke about 37 and clerks in a row ;)

Hey, they have Noam Chomsky and George Carlin - maybe I'll subscribe! :)
Cool! Of course, this could be a bad thing - I'm not sure if I want my console to have the ability to determine if it can kill me or not.

What are you saying? Super Star Wars was a great game. If only they'd make it into a movie...
So you mean 3 solid hours of Luke doing that flip-lightsaber spin? You have wierd taste in movies...
IIRC, that's pretty much how you beat that game. I never found it that hard.
On the other hand, Star Wars: Rogue Leader for my GameCube ownz my sorry ass - I must be getting old or the games are getting harder.
I can see it now...

Wow, I can't wait!
But in Canada, 4/5 people I know are using broadband. I guess it's a lot cheaper here.
Broadband: $35-50 CAD (I pay 42 for DSL and modem rental)
Compared to 3 years ago when I was stuck in rural BC paying by the hour: $50-100 per month, plus second phone line costs.
Sorry, never made a beowulf joke before. Did I spell it right?

Well, now we know he's been paid off.
Seriously, the more I hear about OSX, the more interested I get in trying it out. Who knows - my next PC might be a Mac
Answering my own question here - MNG format appears to be an alternative, but MSIE doesn't seem to support it out-of-the box.
:\
Since 99% of my users are running IE, that's a bit annoying
