  1. No need for hysteria on George Lucas May Be Completely Evil · · Score: 5, Interesting
The main rumor is that Portman will film a "flashback" scene to be inserted into ROTJ when Luke asks Leia if she remembers her mother. (Implying that Leia was born a few years before Luke)

Personally, I like the idea of this. It helps tie all 6 movies together and makes them seem like the series they are supposed to be. I mean, its not like he's totally changing the movie like he did with ANH and the Greedo scene.

I don't know if you are joking or not, but there is actually a lot of cooperation between the auto manufacturers.

Kia made the Ford Aspire & Festiva, and had a relationship with Mazda on the 323 (Though I'm not sure the extent of that relationship).

The whole GM Geo line was nothing but Japanese cars.

    Geo Metro = Suzuki Swift

    Geo Tracker = Suzuki Sidekick

    Geo Storm = Izuzu Something

    Geo Prism = Toyota Corolla

Chrysler and Misubishi shared cars like the Talon and the 3000GT/Stealth.

Heck, right now, if you can buy a Toyota Matrix from Pontiac as the "Vibe". So maybe a better analogy could have been drawn than the car industry.

  5. I'm not concered on Overture Search Terms Showcase Piracy Desire · · Score: 3, Insightful
Let's be honest. Most of the people looking for the "crack" are most likely teens and preteens w/out a job who are looking to do a bit of flash work for a friends web site or something similar. I don't believe the majority of the people looking for the crack would have bought the software had they not been able to crack the software (And if they are using Overture to search for cracks, they're not going to find them anyway). So the total number of sales lost due to piracy like this are minimal.

In fact, I've got a hunch that a lot of these guys will turn out to be great Macromedia customers in a few years once they've honed their skills on the cracked version, and enter the real world of web page design where they can A) Afford the software and B) Write it off as a tax deduction.

Now, I'm not justifying the piracy, and it doesn't make it any less illegal. I just don't think its a big deal when you look at the total picture.

I know in the past the RIAA has threatened the use of "bots" to scan the P2P waters looking for people to bust. It wouldn't surprise me if one of these bots noticed a certain IP address seemed to be online 24/7 with a big pipe for fast downloads and reported to a monitor. It wouldn't be hard to do a reverse lookup and find out that the IP address doing the sharing belonged to Blizzard.

I mean, think about it. Who would you want to sue if you were Sony; Some kid in a dorm somewhere with no money/assets, or a large game company will millions in assets?

  11. Some help on Star Wars Prequels' Art Director Doug Chiang Talks · · Score: -1, Redundant

Seeing that this is a Star Wars story, I'm sure this will end up Slash Dotted. So as a service, here's the important parts:

D: So, what's up with Jar Jar . More specifically, as you were working on Jar Jar, was that the reaction you expected? For example, the thirteen year-old girls can be huge Jar Jar fans, but it makes me cringe.

DC: That's hard to say. In the instance of Jar Jar, when we're designing things like that, whether its for film or for games or whatever, I try not think about what the general perception is because we are so narrowly focused on trying to come up with a really good design. Jar Jar was actually the best possible combination of shapes and personalities and elements that George wanted. We were actually very thrilled with it. We didn't know how he would fit in the story. Our main goal was to design the character.

But, we realized at the end that Jar Jar wasn't made for us. It was made for the 13 year old kid. It's not fair for us to judge, because I can't judge those things. When you're working on a film, you're so immersed in the film that you can't look at things objectively.

And so when the reaction comes out that the character wasn't as appealing to myself or someone else is really irrelevant, because we're not the audience, and we shouldn't be the critiques of that.

D: What was your reaction when you saw Jar Jar in the context of the film the first time?

    DC: Oh, I loved him.

But I'm not a good person to ask, because I loved all those guys. I can't look at any of the projects I worked on objectively, you're asking the wrong person, you should be asking a 13 year old girl .

    Anyone else smell smoke?

Speaking of that, I think for those of us who do not do their own hosting, and run more than one site/domain, we should all look into moving one non-controversial low bandwidth site to their hosting as a showing of support. There aren't many ISP's out there that would stand by their customers like these guys have. Most would have just shut down the site rather than face the Scientologist's attorneys.

A lot of people give lip service to the idea of customer support and supporting free speech, but few will actually stand up and do soemthing to defend it when push comes to shove.

I tried using it for day to day browsing. I'd like to not use IE, but I'm pretty much stuck keeping it open when I use Mozilla so I can cut and paste links that Mozzilla can't handle.

The first bug that just drives me nuts is that when Mozilla can't find an image it pops a window up that must be clicked before I can continue. I have my hosts file mapping certain urls to localhost. So if I go on a page with lots of advertising I have to close 4 or 5 windows that shouldn't be there.

I like to read Drudgereport.com but Mozilla for whatever reason has coniptions trying to render that page.

I've also found myself having to manually dig and find plug-ins that will work with Mozilla. Even Flash, which is probably the most used plug-in on the net made downloading it bothersome. I had to go the the Macromedia web page, search for the plug-in, download an .exe, and then run it. On IE all I have to do is go to a web page with Flash, and it asks me if I want to download it, if I say yes it auto downloads and isntalls for me with just one button click.

I also have other weird bugs with Mozilla, such as not being able to type an address into the menu bar. I have to shut down Mozilla and restart it to clear it.

Couldn't they have just waited a couple more months until the 1.0 final release is out and incorporated that into Compuserve?
