You may notice that the text in iTunes stopped being anti-aliased when you installed iTunes 4. Here's the fix:
System Preferences -> General -> Anti-alias fonts smaller than 8pt.
Should work now.
In other news the iPod firmware 3 does not install any new features - not even a 24 hour clock - whatsoever. Oh, there's AAC-compatability, which will be nice for new re-encoding, but it's not like us European users can purchase tracks yet. Oh, others complained before me? Right.
There have been several questions about PlayerPRO's open source, and so we've set up this PlayerPRO open source FAQ.
What does "PlayerPRO open sourced" mean? This means that the full PlayerPRO source code is now available. You can download it here (offsite download link).
Is there a license? No. There is no license. The PlayerPRO source code is public domain, and thus you can do with it what you want.
Is PlayerPRO now freeware? That's right. PlayerPRO is freeware.
Can I still buy PlayerPRO? No. You can't buy PlayerPRO anymore.
How can I get the full, commercial PlayerPRO release then?
You can download PlayerPRO in the download section. The commercial version still requires a serial. It is up to new developpers to create a new version without registration code. But this should be a really easy task: look inside registration.c file. Besides, with the last version, you don't need the CD to upgrade. Also, with the last version, the serial number is only useful to stop the time limit.
Wasn't PlayerPRO opensourced before?
No. The PlayerPRO source code was previously sold for $499 US. An outdated article is available here.
Antoine just released his code openly. You are free to do what you want with it I guess. He's also willing to help out when he has time it seems. At least according to this letter:
Dear Amon-Re,
You are right! I should not let PlayerPRO die!
But I'm actually so busy:
1) I'm now a new father 2) I'm finishing my speciality in radiology 3) I'm going to leave Switzerland for Los Angeles in 5 months
That's a lot for me!
The solution is:
I'm going to freely release the complete source code of PlayerPRO for anyone and I'll help anyone interested in continuing this work or for bugs correction.
Also it's by far the best Mac OS X Media Player. Wait, VLC is probably the best, but not by far.
This close race is a Good Thing? in my book. Since the end user doesn't have to make a choice, but can keep any number of media players installed, the end user always wins:)

Except that the iPod's mounted next to your back, not the open side of this backpack.
I'm surprised they didn't change the user interface of Shake to better match Final Cut Pro. Just lightening the grey and changing the tabs to match FCP4s would do a world of difference.
Yes, this is probably not a priority in a production tool like this, but Shake looks really out of place on a Mac OS X system.
True. There was an initial problem with macs and copy-protected un-CDs. But there were soon released a firmware update (I believe) that took care of that. Anyways all macs do have mechanical CD ejects, it's just hidden. There's a small pinhole to the side of the drive where you can stick an unbended paperclip in to manually eject the CD.
I've yet to encounter a copy-protected CD that wouldn' t rip in my mac. Only snafu is that it seems to silence the second track on the CD. Which have been fine by me for the few I've ripped so far.
It should be noted that these are not CDs that I've bought myself, just brought by colleagues to be played on my office mac, which have loudspeakers.
- Occasionally shuts down when shoving the remote-control into the jack. I have to smoothly press it it. - Said remote-controls connection is finnicky. I have to press it into place a bit too often if I have it in my pocket. - The clock is some archaic system with letters instead of the standard 24-hour clock used in most parts of the world.
None of these are deal-breakers though. I just love my 20 GB iPod. Bring on AAC already Apple!
?Apple and Philips share a vision for the future,? said Gerard Kleisterlee, CEO of Royal Philips Electronics. ?We both believe that consumers want devices throughout the home to talk to each other, so that, for example, the music stored in iTunes on your Mac can play through the Philips stereo system in your living room, or the photos stored in iPhoto can be displayed as a stunning slideshow on your Philips Flat TV. Rendezvous helps realize this dream. Philips is particularly pleased that Apple has adopted an open standard and architecture for Rendezvous, and we will support Rendezvous in future Philips products.?
Do Apple really have an exclusive deal with Sony Ericsson on syncable mobile phones? I thought it was just the competition (read: Nokia) that just had sub-standard SyncML implementations.
Hmmm... You'll find that a lot of the oldies have true classic mac versions. I have Civ I, II, CTP & III on this computer. Command & Concquer can also be found as well as Age of Empires 2 runs on Mac OS X of course. There's plenty of mac oldies availible including Wolfenstein, Doom, Tomb Raider, Warcraft I, II, III, Infocom Adventures etc. etc.
You won't find GTA and Magic The Gathering, but all the others already exist on native for Mac.
Tabs are much improved and seem a lot faster too. You can now use your regular bookmarks as tab-collections by command-clicking a folder in your bookmark bar or choosing the Open in Tabs-option in it's menu.
The loading info is very useful too. All in all the perfect tabs-implementation. Only nit-pickers care which direction the tabs face:)
Oh, and auto-complete from Adress-book. Trés cool!
Wrong.
AAC is an open format, part of the MPEG4 standard. And new players do support it. Both of you move along to your respective corners.
No Britney
No Backstreet Boys
No Ronan Keating
Seems like Apple is all about quality.
(On the other hand I thought they had no n'sync, but it turned out the proper spelling is *NSYNC and Apple's search engine wasn't intelligent enough)
It's a touch-sensitive solid state plate. Much like a touchpad on the powerbooks, only smooth as glass.
Well, if that's your preference you can push it up to 12 and you'll see a lot less of it.
Type looks sucky though. Kerning's all bad at smaller sizes.

I believe the next steps is to work out a prototype, get it tested, and ACTUALLY PUT TO MARKET before any thing else.
It's a patent, not a product.
Knowing Apple's stance on DRM this could be very interesting indeed.
Actually it's public domain according to the Antoine Rosset:
"There will be no license.
This is simply public domain, and you can also use it in any commercial products."
And here's for the ones too lazy to click:

Xploding Plastix - Treat me mean, I need the reputation.
And I just attended their concert on saturday. Now that was cool in an obscure way.

No, I knew about that too. The connector will still jiggle itself loose after the 'click'.
:)
I'll have to get myself the new remote, thanks for the tip guy above the last poster

Oh well, I still love my T68i.

We've had this for years! Hotline, FTP, KDX, Aquisition have given me Software2Go for as long as I can remember.

Two grammatical errors in one sentence. Just a lesson in why you never should post to Slashdot before breakfast. :-P
