Not so much that Windows is sufficiently stable, but that people have learned to have a level of tolerance with crashing and instability. People with a high level of tolerence will always be needed for testing beta software, but the normal home users really shouldn't. I don't expect next generation of normal home users (running GNU/Linux systems of course) to have much of any tolerance for crashing. Hopefully the developers of the next generation will have a bit higher level of tolerance, or the stability might also be the downfall of GNU/Linux since the developers would give up when they wrote buggy code.

I don't see a point for RedHat. I think Mandrake is superior to RedHat for a distro. After all, they are (supposedly) targetting businesses.
The problem now is... What distro would be targeting (normal) home users? That's what Xandros, Lindows, and Lycoris are trying to do. Unfortunately, none of these are 100% free software (AFAIK) so we still need a free alternative for the (normal) home user.

There's a difference here though. Microsoft did not create C or Java yet they changed it anyway (actually, AFAIC they just forked new languages). W3C, however, made XML so should be able to change it if they wish. Backward compatibility WOULD be nice though... I guess one could possibly use the XML version and work with both versions if they decide to break the compatibility.

Since when does the GPL prevent monetary costs for obtaining information used? Last time I checked, the GPL even allowed programs licensed under it to have a cost associated. Of course, once someone has obtained the program they must also have [access to] the source code and the other various rights protected by the GPL, but that's only once they obtain the program in the first place.
I don't see this going anywhere... I'd rather use kb & mouse. On the other hand, I heard (probably on/.) of some mouse that follows your eyes and lets you use blinks to click... That would probably be more usable.

Isn't there a real.GNU project out there?

Don't you mean high latency? Low latency is a GOOD thing and not common with satellite...
Winamp is a proprietary x86 binary. It cannot run on a RISC processor. Perhaps you mean FreeAmp or XMMS?

Well obviously Slashdot is using Extended ASCII then. Extended ASCII is not any form of Unicode.

Probably because WINE compatibility changes. Some apps that worked in WINE a few months ago don't anymore... Not sure why not tho
