Stupid idea for a notebook. This thing will NEVER sell.

  2. Is this surprising in the least? on FCC Rule Cuts Bandwidth For 72-Mile 802.11b · · Score: 0, Troll

I used to work for an ISP that was over-amplifying their 802.11b signal as a matter of course. We regularly got a usable range of 10 miles. Breaking the rules is the ONLY way to get wireless stuff to work over any kind of real distance. There's so much interference on those frequencies, that being the most powerful signal is the only way to make it work. Of course, that means you screw everybody else up, until they amplify the shit out of their signal, too. Which means you have to amplify your signal even more....rinse, repeat. The FCC screwed up on the 2.4GHz licensing. Free-to-all means "doesn't work right for anybody".

  3. Re:Possible for transparent x86 emulation on Linux on Bochs 2.0 Released · · Score: 1

Uh, while emulation would be *handy*, it has no place in the kernel. And it definitely wouldn't "boost acceptance" of Linux on other platforms. Why would you want to run something in emulation, when for the vast majority of Open Source software, all you need is to do a few tweaks to the source and a recompile? And likely someone else has even done THAT for you?

Microsoft is dominant because they make the best product for their intended markets.

You idiots aren't understanding. We've HAD networks for a long time. We know what they do, we use them for a lot of things. Simply going wireless isn't going to change things very much. A little. Not enough to write a whole book about the changes.

  9. Give me a break on Smart Mobs · · Score: -1, Troll

This book sounds like the same kind of neo-hippie bullshit that retarded magazines like Wired (and Mondo 2000 before it) spew all the time. It's just a fucking wireless network! It's not gonna change society, there are no new "paradigms". But whatever. 10 bucks says somehow Jon Katz was the ghost-writer for this thing ;)

I'm not sure I understand what your point is.

Yes, lots of people want broadband but can't get it in their area. Yes, the entire infrastructure of the Internet is overloaded, and would need to be overhauled to support fast downloads of movies.

That doesn't change the fact that *TODAY* downloading movies over a broadband connection is impractical and slow.

  17. Isn't this admitting defeat? on SuSE Linux will run Microsoft Office · · Score: 2, Interesting

Seems like there is a lot of emphasis on running Windows apps, especially Office, under Linux. This is because there STILL isn't anything to truly replace Office under Linux. Isn't that...well...shameful? Wasn't the "free software movement" supposed to make BETTER software than the corporations could? Why can't we have an Office-killer? Actually, I know why. It's hard to make an Office killer, and costs money to do right. And money is the one thing that the Linux developers don't/won't/can't have.

So I'm paying more to have a crappier picture in essentially every way (color, speed, viewing angle, brightness are all superiour on a CRT)? Give me a break. Oh, and the "saves valuable desktop space" argument is bullshit, too. What, exactly, are you going to be putting behind your LCD display, now that the space isn't taken up by the CRTs tube? LCDs are cool because they are thin, don't use much power, and have a sharper (though not necessarily better)picture. That's it. Otherwise, they suck.

CD is, truly, "good enough". 99.9% of the people in the world don't have a "listening environment", and probably couldn't tell the difference between a tape, FM radio, and a CD anyway.

Though I think it was shitty of MS to come down on Lik-Sang (and modchips in general), the idea that you NEED a modchip to learn X-Box game development is wrong.

An X-Box is, fundamentally, the same as a Windows machine. If you can make games for a PC, you can make games for an X-Box. The tools are essentially the same.

So the modchip as a "learning tool" idea is out the window. I mean, c'mon, modchips are for playing pirated games. Especially on the X-Box, where there aren't even any imported games that need a chip to play.
