but my grandma can't use it.
She buys a digital camera, plugs it on a Mac, and iPhoto does everything for her.
If she plugs in the same camera on a linux machine, will it do the same thing?
Not if you installed the Outlook Security Patch from a touch over three years ago. And recent versions of Outlook Express allow you to prohibit access to dangerous attachments. (Tools | Options | Security)
If this thing was patched, how did SoBig propagate and spread like wildfire? Some systems were never patched for one reason or another, so the patch didn't really do much, huh? Oh well, As long as your system is secure, that's great. It's one less system to spread viruses and trojans.;)
when you intall any kind of app (like an SMTP server) in OS X, the system won't let you do it unless there's user interaction. You have to enter a password. You have to be an admin to be able to install an app. Windows will run any script, even pre packaged executables without letting the user know it's gonna do it. attach it to an email and outlook runs it.
MS has been long rumored to tell Intel what they can and can not do, and their record in confrontations like this are not one to bet against. Rumor has it that the vole has said that they will only support a single 64-bit extension to IA32, but then months ago they said they would be supporting 5 64-bit architectures in windows.
does this mean the chip will be tailored for the MS OS? will it be totally worthless if you buy a system and load a different OS?
here's a little bit of info about the myth of Security through Obscurity
The reason OS X and other *nix OSes do not get attacked more often is not because of its low market share...
but i wish they would develop a DNA test that can give you results faster than 1-2 days. If they can cut it down to a couple minutes or even a couple hours that would be fantastic.
Intel (and others) could dispute every benchmark out there, but no matter how fast a P4 or Xeon is, it has one major problem which prevents me from buying one... It still can't run OS X. And no...rumors about an Intel based Mac running OS X deep inside Apple HQ doesn't count.
The fact that the Explorer is the most popular and best selling SUV in the planet has very little to do with design. it's all about marketing.
make a car that's good enough to use for 90% of the population, make it cheap, and throw in a bunch of incentives and extras. People will buy and use it. upgrade it every year to make it a little better.
Speed is not the reason why some people use Macs.
They use it because of the OS and bundled apps. Having a nice looking computer, complete with dual processors and altivec to speed things up is just a bonus.
Who's going to watch and run this system? Can the store prevent someone from walking in the store with a 20gig ipod and leaving with 20 gigs worth of downloaded software?
because you need to register at NYT to read the article, only 40% of people will register to read it.
10% will bitch about providing a link that doesn't require registration.
30% will post a comment even without reading it.
1% will be about first posts
1 % will be "In Russia" posts
2% will be about BSD or some celebrity dying
5 % will be about piracy
35% will be about bashing the RIAA
and...
30% will mod this as funny
30% will mod this as a troll
and 100% will go on with their lives even if CDs disappear off the planet.
even if MS decides to put the Windows GUI on top of Linux, they will still find a way to make it crash. It's all about the quality and skill of programmers/coders.
No matter how fast or how slow IE is, a lot of people are still stuck using it because there are just some sites that are Windows-centric. Some sites just don't work or looks like crap if you're using something else.

that's about the time they'll be done reverse engineering the iPod's operating system and interface. :P

what will the slashdotters do?
you provide a sample DNA of yourself and use it as a reference

that's what i get for not reading ALL the other posts
just set it and forget it ?

Microsoft did the same thing with Windows.
that questions whether it supports OGG. :P
BTW, it doesn't. It only supports MP3 and WMA.

Remember, Apple came up with the "Flower Power" and "Dalmation" iMacs. It was not skinnable, but it still did not sell.
Is there a corporate conspiracy to limit recording time of camcorder to about an hour (like DVD-R camcorders)?
No conspiracy there. It's the battery life. I have yet to see a camcorder battery small enough to carry and that can last more than 3 hours.
and he uses a Mac. :P
I want the ports in the back, not the side of the computer.
that they sell those things to the right people, or at least screen the buyers.
I don't want any terrorist group getting a hold of one of those.
Since their Public School System provided iBooks to every 7th and 8th grade teachers and students.
