    Consumers see Dell, HP, Gateway, and other popular brands while Lindows is on a generic box. Maybe those K-Mart boxes aren't selling, so he wants a more popular box.

    Until Jan 7 to find out what the exact plans are before bashing and criticizing rumours.
    Apple did not survive this long (even with so little market share) because of stupid business decisions. Somewhere down the line they made the right choices.

    1. Reset the iPod. Press and hold "Menu" and "Play" buttons.
    2. The Apple logo will appear. Press and hold "REW", "FFW" and "Select" button. You will hear an audible chirp sound. Your now in diagnostic mode
    3. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode.

    I'm pretty sure the Apple motherboards still use Open Firmware. You'll run into problems. Some of Apple's own computers won't even load the OS without the right firmware.

    I was taught that once someone has physical access to a system, it's game over with regards to security.
    In other words, the authentication system will only deter, not stop unauthorized access. How about just taking the laptop with you?

    Being a regular/forum member at broadbandreports/dslreports, I can tell you that some of the ISP techs send their customers to those forums for answers. It has helped many users in the past and it will continue to help others in the future, whether the ISPs like it or not.

    If a windows box can telnet or ftp to a mac server on the real internet, it should work with IP over firewire the same way, no?

    That's the problem. the keyword there is should .You never know with them if it will play nice with other Operating Systems or not. If they followed Open Standard protocols, it will work if everything is set up correctly.

    as soon as grandma realizes she can't use AOL or do any other internet related stuff on it, you'll be sitting there installing a modem, downloading drivers and WINE. :p

    No matter how good a browser is, it can't compensate for badly coded sites.
    In other words, it's basically garbage in, garbage out.
    If a webmaster optimizes for Windows IE, there will be certain functions that just won't work with any other browsers. One example is wmf/wma files. It always gives me trouble when I'm not using an MS OS.

    either the WMP9 codec is state of the art, or that's a typo. anyone can fit 1.5 hrs of video on 1 gig of space, but how good is the quality of the video? you have to reduce something to get it to fit. he might be comparing compressed versus uncompressed material.

    the problem is...
    Sometimes MS likes to "embrace and extend" protocols so it's close enough to the real thing, but only works on their own stuff.

    doesn't TiVo already run linux?
    If i'm not mistaken, TiVo is pretty much a linux box running on PPC hardware.
    With the current Christmas sales around the country, I'm sure you can get the real thing cheap.

    So, what does your brother do to prevent his hair from catching fire?

    Sounds of 165 dB would cause a person's hair to catch fire from the frictional heating caused by air undergoing such intense compression and expansion.
